:)UP DATE...due to typing error:)

Lets do a manual mode exercise to help you understand stops.

It's a nice sunny day...and you have a subject like a dog for example as part of the overall scene.

Lets set your camera to a shutter speed of 1/100 sec. Set ISO to 100 and lets set your aperture (the F-stop) to F/16.

This should give you a fairly nice shot with deep depth of field, (foreground and background in focus).

This is called The Sunny Sixteen rule for example.

Lets say you now want to take that same shot but this time you want to blur the background but keep the subject in focus.
This is called (Shallow Depth of Field). Let open the aperture on the lens as wide as it can go. For this example, the widest your lens will open is 1:4 or f/4.

To get there from f/16 we will need to (Stop Up or Step Up) The Lens by 4 stops.

So, from f/16 to f/11 is 1 stop, from f/11 to f/8 is 2 stops, from f/8 to f/5.6 is 3 stops and from f/5.6 to f/4 is 4 stops.

If you took that same shot now your photo would be completely over exposed. We did 4 doublings of light when we stopped up the lens by 4 stops.

To compensate for this we need to speed up the shutter by four stops because the lens is now capturing to much light and this is done by straight doubling. For example: our shutter speed is at 1/100 sec. so from 100 we double to 200, that's 1 stop, from 200 to 400, that's 2 stops, from 400 to 800, that's 3 stops and from 800 to 1600 is 4 stops.

Take the shot. You should now have a Shallow Depth of Field...

This is just one example of how to start understand your F-stops and how it effects your exposure.

A good summary, save for one thing: going from f/16 to f/4 (bigger hole) is normally known as opening up, and f/4 to f/16 (smaller hole) as stopping down.

Just a momentary brain fade, sure, but worth clarifying for those readers who may be puzzled by the jargon.

Cheers,

R.

I can't stand the negative remarks and rude reply's I was receiving on topics I wrote about that were fact based issues that were developed over many years. I just cleaned everything up in a simple to understand language that everyone hopefully could swallow.

In my 24 short days on the forum I was ridiculed and basically told I did not know what I was talking about in countless PM's by quite a few members...

Yes, on the outside in public view, there were a lot of members that enjoyed the knowledge based facts I wrote about and a few negative ones also and that was fine but, the rude insults I received on the private side of the forum out weighed the positive.

If you don't mind my language here, I think that there is a lot of foolish a** holes lacking brains and don't understand which end of the camera you shot a photo from in that forum. The ones that have knowledge, just enough knowledge that they know it all are the worst!...sorry.

I have never experienced the lack of respect I did there in my entire 31 years as a photographer and teacher.

Please don't add anymore into it, I have great respect for you sir!

You have created sixteen (16) separate topic threads on UHH. I have read most, and replied in a few. I have not read a dis-respectful remark twards you, so I must have missed it. To which thread are you referring?

If you are getting out of line PMs, I suggest posting them publicly for open forum scrutiny. People operating that way behind the scenes for the purpose of anonymity need to have their tactics openly displayed for all to witness. Any members leaving over such cowardly bullying tactics are feeding those arrogant egos with the fuel they need to continue those attacks and should be soundly thwarted for it, not rewarded.

Since it has been 36 hours since I suggested this to the OP, I have to wonder if there really were those numerous and disparaging PMs sent to him as he has refused to either post them publicly or disclose the senders IDs. At this time I feel their extire existence is in doubt and this may be just another case of a poster failing to get the recognition he thought he was deserving of and quitting while stirring up resentment amongst the other UHH members.
Seems we may never know at this point.
I personally would encourage any member who receives any such outrageous PMs to post them publicly here as such tactics are, or should be, below the standards of this forum.
But, then again, I am an opinionated old fart!

I did not PM this guy. I did not reply to any of his threads or comments. I no longer have the time to waste on people like this. I did however read some of his threads when I saw that he had some knowledge on photography. But than I noticed that his threads begins to drip with arrogance. Maybe he does have high dollar equipment. His pictures (not photos) pictures don't show it or that he uses his knowledge.
I am glad to see this arrogant snob leave.

Lets get something straight right now!

I never bragged about anything on this topic, its how you yourself took it....

I was just sharing something with you people like the rest of you do when you purchase new equipment...

Sorry to offend those that don't understand my words and also my budget!

Just like a bull dozier......thank you for that.

I will never share or talk about the equipment I own or about to own again...

This reminds me of a little fish some of you once caught while fishing, by the end of the day, it was a freaking whale!!!

People say what they themselves want to hear, I feel sorry you...Get a freaking life or a job that affords you to do thing other people are already doing...

Please do not make up things that aren't true...

As for leaving, they won't delete me so, your freaking stuck with me for now and I will tell all of you this, some of you rude members (you know who you are) have changed me here and the gloves are off.

If you want to cause trouble with some of us, be prepared for a fight from quite a few of us for now on............

Good day...

If say a professional grader spends 100,000 on a bulldozier nobody thinks anything of it. Let a professional photographer drop 35 grand on a camera and he is a spend thrift. If I was a professional photographer you can bet your sweet behind I would have some high dollar equipment.

Would you also feel it necessary to publicize the fact on this website? It's not like anyone asked?

I think if you were under the mistaken impression that the site is mostly dominated by other professionals, a $35000 camera would not be that big of a shocker. UHH seems to be mostly amateurs for whom the very idea of buying a camera that expensive is just crazy talk!

I don't care what he can afford or what he spends for his equipment, only that it is tacky to brag about it.

Let me state this, If you are not using Lightroom 4, then you should not have an issue...

I was not aware they fixed the export issue in Ver 3.

Slipped that one in on me. The beginning of post still in play.

Example: If you connect your camera or insert a flash card or whatever in to your computer and you have Lightroom software installed, Automatically Lightroom opens and things look a little confusing - to most of us anyway. If you like this method, that's fine. I prefer to make my own choices.
