Great shot! My wife and I are coming to Portland in a couple weeks, what place did you take this from? I've been a couple of times, but never knew a good place to photograph the city at night.

Keeping camera ready and having a great eye does wonders in the capture mode. Great capture. The expression is priceless.
Jim

Thank Jim. There was a renaissance fair at the zoo that day, I took about 400 pictures of performers, animals, etc, but this is one of my favorites of the day.

Great capture and perspective.

Thank VietVet...I was walking ahead and when I turned around and saw this I had to get the shot. Later one of the kids saw it and said 'Why did you take that picture?" no zoo animals or anything...lol

I started to clean out a closet that contained boxes and boxes of slides. Naturally, I started to look at them and I was amazed at how crisp they were in comparison to a lot of my more recent stuff. These slides are over forty years old and many shot with a Yashica 35mm and a Canon AE -1. Were my eyes that much better with manual focus than now? By the way, the AE-1 does have a split screen focus. What say you?

My 2 cents for what its worth. In the Navy, 30 years ago, I took over 3,000 pictures, almost all Kodachrome 25. Today I use a Nikon D600. I recently scanned all my slides on my computer. While I would not try to make a nuts and bolts comparison, clarity, color, vibrance, etc. etc., I would just say that I am amazed how good my slides look overall. My D600 pictures look really good also, so I am not sure at this point it is worth debating the pros and cons. Suffice to say, film is really good, whatever the reason.

UHH ges a lot of older people with a new or re-newed interest looking for suggestions on equipment..
Often the suggestions are to buy cheap, keep what they have, learn what their interests are going to be, learn how to shoot, etcÂ…
Good advice but really only addressing part of the question.

Many of these questions come from people with little knowledge of the technical aspects of photography and it is respectful and polite to treat them gently. It is nice to encourage them, to try and protect them financially, but lets not forget why they are here.

They may not know jack about technique but they know what a good image is and they want some of their own.
Lets not condemn them to mediocre images when a change in equipment would be more appropriate. Most of these people have been there and done that, we need to respect their aspirations, not curtail their abilities.

Sorry oldtigger, but "Newbies have rights too" is just not true. While I agree with you philosophically, in a recent supreme court decision, the justices held in a 5 to 4 resolution, that while Newbies are "technically" photographers in the broadest sense of the term, they have no "rights" on any forum of which they have been a part of in less time that it takes to obtain tenure. Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote "While Newbies are indeed a protected species and should therefore be given the same respect as the Greater One horned Rhino or the Southern Rockhopper Penguin, to say they have rights is a bit of a stretch. We hold these truths to be self evident that aperture settings and white balance are not something we are entitled to. That is to say, this knowledge is more a privilege to be earned, rather than a right or entitlement." I'm just saying.....

I have an original picture that has scratches across the face affecting the eyes. Has any one got any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Arnie

Hi Arnie,
I don't claim to be a photoshop "expert" but I know my way around pretty good, and I think this is a bit beyond photoshops ability. You would be just making things up. I know this is a long shot judging by the age of the photo, but if you have other photos of the lady, it may be possible to put something together from them to help this shot. Otherwise, I am afraid you are really fighting an uphill battle with this one.

What were you really bothered about, that you didn't get credit for a prize winning photo you took, or that she lied about taking it?

I would think that when you gave her the roll of film instead of developing it to determine the quality of what you took, you pretty much forfeited your rights to the pics.

That she did not feel the need to share the cash with you goes to her character. Who knows, maybe she felt like she paid you $25 bucks without seeing anything, and the gamble was hers, so she did not feel obligated further.

I don't think you were obligated, morally or legally to say anything. The morality is her issue.

Either way, after 25 yeas, I would let it go.
