One example in which bad equipment totally fails is an indoor event in a hall that has the ceiling painted black. That means no flash will bounce off it. To top that off, they also turn down the lights very low to create "mood." Someone decided for us all who knows when, that mood is attained when we cannot see clearly.
In such circumstances cheap equipment will utterly fail. The better lenses -and cameras- have a chance of rescuing the situation, because they perform better in low light. They focus faster, track fast action better, produce noticeably better images, and are more rugged.
