I understand the various reasons a product might come back into the OEM's hands for resale as refurbished. I understand, too, that there may often be no need for any actual refurbishment. But at a minimum I would expect them to inspect and test it to ensure it operates properly before sending it back out the door again. Thankfully, I've had no problems w/my refurb 7D and 70-200 lens. Glad they fixed your problem.

Shot, the last time they fixed it, it came back with something bent in it. Really bad! But they did the right thing in the long run, just a real hassle.

I think if you dig into it a bit more you will find that the refurbishing process is something like this:
First they visually inspect an item and then check that it functions within established parameters. For returns or overstock that is probably the end of it, but for anything that doesn't pass initial inspection they then determine if it is worth repair. If so, that is when they actually disassemble and repair it. That system is pretty much industry standard for lightly used components. The only reason I can think of that the OP's problem wasn't discovered immediately is that for some reason it didn't show up in the initial inspection. Perhaps the tech just assumed that the OP wasn't using it properly or had camera issues. Anyway, it's fixed now!

You know what, all I can do is let you know how things went for me. And, also what Canon themselves told me. It is not false advertisement to label them Refurbished as you will see if you look it up on Wiki. Same as Canon told me. The last time they fixed it, it came back to with something bent in it. It was a mess. Given credit where it's do I did end up with a new one that works great. But, it was a real time consuming and unpleasant experience to finally get something done. It was the Lens as also verified by Canon. Not the OP!

Sorry to see you had such a bad expereince. I had a problem with an auto-focus issue on a 70-300 and sent it in.It came back good as new and guess what???? no charge. All I had to pay was shipping. It was 2 yrs old and wouldnt auto-focus. I also had good luck with Sigma. I dont know why you had such a run around.
There are times when your dealing with large companies that you can get lost in the shuffle. Sometimes customer service needs a wake-up call and you gave them one
Glad all worked out for you!
Sorry to see you had such a bad expereince. I had ... (show quote)

Thanks, Hopefully others have your experience and not mine. Good to hear that about Sigma!

Thanks for the update on your problem. This may help some of us avoid a similar problem.

I told everyone that I would let them know how this was resolved. After sending my 50 1.4 back to Canon for repair the 3rd time and talking to several managers I was finally able to talk to someone with access to the Presidents Office. Bottom line, I was able to stop them from sending it back for the third time and it was replaced with a new 50 1.4 which I asked them to check out on Camera before sending it. This was accomplished to my satisfaction as the new one is very good. However, it took a lot of time and going through several Managers to finally get to the right person and get it resolved. I might also add that "refurbished" does not mean that they actually did refurbish the lens. Stated by them and after looking it up on Wiki found that electronics that are sold as that can just be returns, slightly used etc. So buyer beware. Not actually refurbished. Canon also stated that. So, the thought that it's best to buy Refurbs from Canon because their techs have worked on them is not a truth. Found that out the hard way. I think if I buy refurbished again it will be from a reputable camera dealer that you can deal with much faster and can ask questions about the particular lens your buying. Thankful this is over as it was an ordeal.

This is Arno replying,

My purchase of a refurbished lens was directly from Canon. They tell you that "refurbished" is as new because they are unused returns and overstocks. BS My refurbished lens had a finger print inside the lens which Canon accused me of putting there. They were rude and accusative. Do not buy refurbished goods from Canon!

He's right folks - Good advice!

I was about to buy a refurbished 24-105L the other day on but found what looks to be a like new lens on ebay for less then $600... Maybe it is a good thing that I did not purchase the refurb. I own the Sigma EX 50 f/1.4 and love it. It is currently on sale. It is a lot bigger and heavier than the cannon and it also has 9 curved blades that makes these perfect little round balls of out of focus light. I find the lens to be very sharp.

I love my Sigma lenses and will never buy another Canon lens after this experience. I don't like the way Canon has done business and I sure don't like thinking I was getting an actually refurbished lens. Hindsight!

I have always heard that refurb was the way to go... that the techs tested them before they returned them for resale. This is discouraging news, I was under the impression that refurb in many ways was better than buying new. Did you purchase directly from Canon or did you purchase from a reseller?

Yes, I bought directly from Canon and now I am having to deal with them and that is not easy. I believed the same thing that you have believed. I have been told a couple of things. Two said that they are just returns, one said they take it out and take a few shots to check them. One said that they are returns from overstock in Camera Stores and are then resold by them and have to be resold as refurbished. Take your pick and if you buy from them hope they send you a good one, because they really don't know. The opinion that they have actually been refurbished by Canon is deceptive at best and a natural assumption, and of course it's what you would think, They are advertised that way. Yes, I am shocked too. Not So! Here's the clincher - mine is back for the 3rd time. What's wrong here - why twice worked on and still not right? Are they going to force me to take it back a 3rd time? I'll let everyone know how it's handled now. I have told them I don't want it back again! I'll know something shortly. No way I would trust that lens and after this experience I don't want another Canon 50 1.4. Would prefer a Sigma (wish it could be the Art Lens). But, I love the Sigma 17-50 2.8 and the Sigma 50-150 2.8 that I have. I have to believe their 50 1.4 would be a much better built lens. Couldn't be any worse.

I just got off the phone with Canon in Va.

I dropped my G15 and broke the front lens housing (my fault). Sent it to Canon in Va. They sent me back 2 estimates, One was for free and the 2nd was for $200. tHE $200 was the correct one. So I called them and told them I wanted the one for free.

I ended up settling with them for $100.

I'm a happy camper. Hope I'm just as happy when I get the camera back. I expect I will be.

Hope they do a good job on your G16! At least you got some satisfaction.

Murphy, it's too bad you are hassling with this.
Let's assume it will come back as good as new.
If not, I suggest you STOMP on it. Then send it back and say that's how you got it!!
They won't replace it, but at least you'll have that, feeling good feeling, which is better than what you have now!
Murphy, be positive and let's hope it's not Murphy's Law!

At this point I would get some satisfaction out of that. Hoping not to get it back, we'll see what they do. That does sound like a very GOOD idea! If I get it back the same way that's all it would be good for! Thanks, I needed a good smile over this!
