I like both shots but prefer the 2nd. Heck, just getting one that will sit still in clear view till you can focus & press the shutter is no small task. They can see me from a mile away.

Me too, they are really a wary bird. Best luck, when it is cool or cold they seem not as eager to lift their tail an become a memory.
I look as far as I can see [now about 50 yds] and then stop when they stare-sometimes I get lucky-it is just pure fun. Hope you enjoy the game as much as I do. Happy hunting. Ron

I prefer the first pose and the secnd crop. Good thing ya don't look like food - from the way he was 'sizing you up' in the first shot

Great shots!!

Thanks so much.
They can really stare you down and you can see those eyes burn a hole in you from a distant and if they don't like it- Takes a second and they are gone. :)

First let me say - this is only the opinion of a truly amateur photographer. Raptors are great subjects and the breathtaking part of them as a photo subject is their eyes and then their pose. Both of your shots are excellent as far as the subject is concerned. But the background detracts from our eyes focus on the subject. There are, at least, two main ways to minimize the background distraction - minimize depth of field with your camera with a more wide open aperture and/or blurring and/or lightening or darkening the background.

Please understand this is my opinion only.

I value opinion. Shooting is fast on Red-tails and if I cut the DOF I probably will lose, but you idea of blurring is spot on since I am really bad trying to brush with my little laptop and really old eyes, but your idea of blurring is a great idea and I thank you for mentioning it and for your time to look. Me too, but lighting was going silhouette on that side of the river. Landing was strange as they usually head up stream to the nest at dusk. Ron

In my opinion, this needs to be massively cropped with the duck on the right 1/3, down to the shadow, left to the bank (keep the tree out of it and up to a bit of the far bank.

Thanks for input-I want the viewer to flow the stream and not the ducks they are just to add direction for the eye, but I am going to play with it more and see your view. If, you want to play around with it you have my permission to do so. Wife calling gotta run. Be Back. ron
