Right now it is -11 F outside. At my age I'm not standing outside longer than necessary.

You can't overwrite an existing image. Instead, you'll get a "FULL CARD" message when there is insufficient room left. The Read / Write of a card is in the millions. You'll wear out your camera before the card.

Shooting RAW & JPG on my Canon 80D, I have yet to fill a card although I have come close with 32GB cards and did once with an 8GB in my T5. My advice would be to buy a 32 or 64 GB card. Memory is cheap.

For me it would have been around -30 F in Southern Ontario, Canada. That would have been in the early 1960s.

I'm not sure what your problem is. Have you tried to open the first in (ie, December 25) before opening last in (January 01)?

I would think its a deity. Walking on water is the major clue.

My recommendation is to leave the card in the camera and physically remove it as little as possible. Every time you remove and insert a card you create wear on the contacts. That mechanical wear can shorten the life of the card. That doesn't mean don't ever remove the card, but you shouldn't do it as a matter of course. You can save the life of the cards by using the USB cable to d/l your pictures. Nothing spoils a good day like having a broken contact on your card.

There is no need to reformat the card after the initial time unless it was since formatted for another device. Formatting the card shouldn't hurt the card, but there is no need for it. Formatting only tells the card how to be written to and read, it doesn't remove any data from the card. (An accidental formating can usually be recovered with most recovery programs.)

Large capacity cards are cheap and getting cheaper. Buy a large capacity card and just leave it in your camera. Unless the shot is of my foot, I leave it on there until I d/l to my computer. Deleting a shot in the field doesn't hurt the card in any way. All it does is remove the header on the file which allows that area of the card to be written over. The same as happens when you d/l to a computer. Just why waste your time in the field looking at a 3" screen to decide if its a keeper?

If we go solely by the image, and not your accompanying narrative, could this be mistaken for new construction? Thereby conveying an entirely different message? What do you define as the negative space of the image and how does it help tell the story?

I see a rusting skeleton. The skeleton is surrounded by nothing, adding to emptiness of a skeleton. New construction has a vitality of energy and purpose about it, a sense of creation. Death only has decay; its unwanted.

Good question.

I would have expected a lens hood to exacerbate the shadow. Plus, the Nikon lens is longer and would be more of a problem blocking the flash.

A 50mm lens on a 35mm sensor (or 35mm negative) was considered the equivalent of a normal eye. Any lens with a higher focal length was considered telephoto and less was wide angle. In the early days of photography and changeable lenses, a focal length of 80-100mm was an accepted good range as it created a comfortable distance from the subject. Photographers could set up their equipment and get consistent results. (As they all used different medium and large format cameras, they would have used an equivalent size lens)

With todays wide range of cameras and lenses, you can use almost any lens to get a decent portrait. But, what makes a good portrait has changed a lot from the days of Karsh. We don't sit the subject in a full second, very large aperture, angled head shot pose with a dark back ground. We allow much more leeway in our approach to position, background, and amount of body. We use backgrounds as an element and light as a bonus. Motion and facial expressions are allowed.

If you want to recreate a Karsh era portrait then ya, go for that 80-120mm lens on your APC-C with the dark background and side lighting. My experience is to just keep a comfortable distance from the subject and let them be them. That requires talking to them and using a mild telephoto (~70-200) with larger (f3.5 - 5.6) aperture. (I dislike working at extreme apertures)

What was once a massive plant stamping panels for General Motors less than 10 years ago, has been largely torn down. This is all that remains.

The emptiness was once filled with buildings, machines, cranes, coils of steel, and people and the amenities they use. Weeds push up in the parking lots and signs are slowly rusting away. Puddles slowly evaporate.

I would be wary. This is a refurbished product. That means it was returned under warranty and fixed. Who do you trust more to have repaired the camera; Canon or the eBay seller? If the price is too good to be true, it just might not be.

When going out, I leave the camera and lenses in my bag and let them come to the outside temperature slowly. When I'm finished, I turn it off manually, put the lens cap on, then put the camera away in my bag and zip it up. If moving to another spot, I'll leave the camera bag in the back so it'll stay cold. If I'm done I put the bag up front so it can warm up in dry air.

Dressing warm is a prerequisite. You don't want to quit when the woodpeckers are dancing with each other.
