The government can take as much money from the rich as they want and give it to the poor. If they did this for 20 years, the poor would still be poor. The only things that will lift the poor out of poverty are good jobs and a sound economy. Look at India and China. This is how their poor are getting to the middle class.

Ecuador is a beautiful country but Quito is a very dangerous city. Mostly pick pocketing and muggings. Guayaquil is even worse. Be very careful in Quito especially at night. Since two of you are traveling together, you will be less of a target.

Taxi fares go up at night because the drivers realize you may be a bit frightened. Always settle on a price before getting in.

Galapagos is very safe. I hope you get to Puerto Villamil, the most charming beach town I have ever been to. Take sea sickness medication, as the trips to the islands in small boats can last from 2-3 hours and the ocean may be rough.

Go to Puerto Lopez if you can. It is a small fishing village south of Manta.
