Paulie ... I looked at a picture of the Sigma 18-300 ... could've swore there was a USB dock, directly on the lens barrel ...

Still don't know if the lens needs to be attached to the camera you will be using it on, before doing the update ....

Anything further, Paulie?

Nope, you take the lens of the camera, put the dock on it, everything is done on the computer - the camera body has nothing to do with it.
When you think you're done disconnect the dock, put lens on the body, shoot like nothing has ever happened.
Repeat if necessary.
There are no adjustments done to the body itself.

I'm sure there is plenty of walkthroughs available online to read or view.

That's good, Paulie ... does it require being attached to the camera, or do you update the firmware, detached from the camera?

If attached, does it then recognize the camera the lens is on, and make special adjustments for the attached camera, or don't you know?

You attach lens to so called USB dock which is connected to your computer via USB cable.
There is a software you need to install, which then automatically recognizes your lens and gives you two options: update or fine tune.
Fine tuning is basically the same thing you would do in camera body (slider left or right of zero)
What I don't really understand is why don't lens makers put micro USB connector directly on the lens barrel instead of requiring an extra piece of hardware. I think it's probably just a marketing move...

Fine tuning worked perfectly on my Sigma Art 50-100 f1.8. Works as intended.
Easy thing to do at home and for free. Requires time and quite a few test shots.
No firmware update available for that lens so far.
Haven't tried it with my 150-600C yet.

Fully articulated touchscreen of the D5500 was not my priority at all.
I got this camera mostly for it's size, weight, good grip, 24MP sensor with the ability to produce sharp images and of course price.
However once I used my D5500 for the first time I realized how much we're used to do everything on our phones - zooming, changing some settings or modes, turning flash on/off, shutter, instantly checking for sharpness or red eyes, immediately deleting pictures we don't like etc.
Needless to say I fell in love with it right away .
Being able to look at it comfortably while taking pictures from weird angles, like for example when your camera is on a tripod and is pointed almost straight up while taking pictures of the night sky is a big plus too.
I'm thinking about future investment in another body with more sophisticated focusing system, higher FPS and high ISO capability, but not anytime soon, because besides other reasons "Learn with what you have" is one of the most important points (and a very smart one) often made by experienced UHH members and this particular camera can still do more than I can.

Looks like carbon fiber, but still, $1000? I think I would make my own and cover it with Lens Pro wrap.

I thought the same thing!

It's not a record, I sold a Nikon lens hood in it's case, which was made for the 50/1.1 Rangefinder lens, for $1,200 about 20 Years ago.

Thanks for the replies. The first shot is actually a small spring that is almost shooting out from under the shrub. This was one of my first attempts at framing with the spring and the small rock platform set behind the leaves. Wish the sun was in a better place and the light was better. I see what is mentioned on the others as well, unfortunately on a 15mi steep hike like this one I don't bring all my gear, I leave the heavy stuff behind like the heavy lens and sometimes like this hike I will leave the tripod.

However I did try cropping the first moose......are we related, sure looks like my ex MIL too :):) How is this one?
Thanks for the replies. The first shot is actuall... (show quote)

It is a pretty good idea to accept that a picture should only have one point of interest—that accepted know that the eye will seek out, and look at, the lightest, the warmest, and the busiest thing it can find in the image—a pretty good matra is “isolate and simplify”—only the first 10,000 are hard—take lots of pictures—I am a bit past two million
