I''m in the latter part of my 80's, blessed to travel many places most others have not visited. A tomato growing it's own tomato plant and a black flower were two things I'd never experienced before. Also, I would appreciate knowing the name of the flower; and it ain't Henry. The last tomato picture was taken one week after the first two; 3 mornings later it had burst and my wife threw it in the trash and it sorta exploded.

Maybe you've run into this already, Amazon has a scammer trying to use email to get you to give them you data. IMHO they are a bit worried about directly copying Amazon's address; all that shows on your email list is exactly like Amazon's except the scammer's use a lower case a insted of the capital A. Some of the older folks at church also suggest carefully checking the full email address and if it is different from the real thing, bail out immediately.

My Amazon rebate credit card is my standard for paying for Amazon orders. I was surprised to get a bill from Amex last night for $202. Looking online this morning, I saw they were all charges from Amazon. I was wondering why it was taking so long for Amazon charges to come through on their card. Somehow, the payment got switched over to American Express. I had noticed a couple of weeks ago that Amex was the default payment method, so I switched it back.

Make sure the payment method you want is the one being used.

It is said that if you cross the Northern border from Saskatchewan on the way to Matamoros, MX, when you cross the Texas border at the panhandle you would be only halfway there.

It is also said, if you could pick up Texas and using Texarkana as the tilting pivot point, laying the State flat, El Paso would be in the Atlantic Ocean; tilting West using El Paso as the pivot point, Texarkana would be in the Pacific Ocean.

Hi, I live in the UK and have been to the US many times but never to Texas.
We are thinking of visiting in Sept/Oct this year and would welcome any advice relating to places to go and things to photograph. We will probably fly in to Houston and out from DFW and have 2 weeks or so to travel.
I also understand that West Texas is very photogenic and would welcome advice on places to visit and stay.
Thank you

The McDonald Observatory in the Big Bend area is one of the best places to see and photograph the Milky Way. Also, the observatory has a very nice program about our space neighbors and how they react to each other that are very worth the small expense.

Second, if you visit the Panhandle area check out Palo Duro Canyon (probably misspelled), between Lubbock and Amarillo. The canyon is a small Grand Canyon and during the late Spring and Summer, in the canyon, a live show with men and horses, wagons, cattle (Longhorns), and Indians portray the history of the West as it happened in the Panhandle. Very enjoyable. The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce can be contacted for more information.

Thirdly, while in the Dallas, Ft. Worth area visit the premier Western Art Museum containing huge paintings and sculptures by Remington and other famous artists.

Finally, be prepared for distances measured by Texans in hours. not mileage. Years ago, an old tourist photocard addressed the situation whether traveling the State border East to West or North to South, and still generally true today: An Easterner intending to travel from Little Rock to El Paso says, "The sun has rize, and the sun has set, here we iz still in Texas yet."

Once Epson found out I had a third party cartridge in my printer, they immediately shut it down. Our cartridges or the highway! It was a cheap printer so I gave it away. Never Epson again.

Someone took them to court about that and Epson lost; now they have to let you use any ink you choose; however, placing a non Epson cartridge gets you an error message telling you it is not an Epson and you have to acknowledge that and approve of knowing it isn't an Epson cartridge and to go ahead and use it.

I've been using refillable cartridges in current and two previous Epson printers. The only gripe I've had with my current XP-970 is the change in their software concerning running out of ink in the middle of printing a photo. Both previous printers, when this happened, stopped printing until you changed the cartridge. A new cartridge installed and the printer completed printing the photo. The XP-970 spits out the incomplete photo, the error message tells one to change the cartridge; that done, the printer prints out the remaining portion of the photo on another piece of paper and ejects the mess. Thus, now their process uses more ink and paper. Oh the peril of the purchaser buying from a company driven only by profit.

Some Epson inkjet printers are designed to shut down after a certain number of prints (consumeraffairs.com)

In the article they also reference an Epson website that confirms this statement. Epson claims that the ink pad that soaks up excess ink is predicted to be full and could over flow after the measured amount of use. The Epson website is shown here:

Nice to know they are looking out for us but one wonders if this notification is as far from being accurate as their “low on in change cartridges now”?

Just thought I would pass this on. In my many travels on the internet I found a company that sells refilled ink cartridges. They charge far less than the printer companies but these cartridges give very good prints & from using them for a little bit they haven't clogged up on me like the cartridges made by the printer companies & far cheaper. The name is Inkjet.com. I am not employed by them but when you find something good you pass it on. I have read all the complaints that have been posted on the HOG & figured I'd post a good thing. Check them out. I don't think you will be sorry. Happy shooting & printing. Have a happy & safe New Years.

Precision Colors is a quality company and I would still be with them except they do not yet provide ink for my current printer. They, like InkOwl, provide excellent products and support.

I have been using ink from InkOwl for over a year and find their ink to produce prints on my Epson XP970 that I and others compare well with Epson's overpriced ink. The last two total set up (catridges, six-120ml bottles, syringes, and head print sealers to use during refilling) cost me $99.95. InkOwl does not support all printers; however, they are very knowledgeable about the several they do support. I print a lot of family and friends calendars (standard monthly calendar info on front, one of my pictures on its back, plus, many gratuitous photos and other stuff. Currently, I'm on my fourth refill and all bottles are just under half full; I expect at least two more refills. By using these refills I have not spent $620.00 for ink. (6 x $120{Epson ink} =#720.00 - $100.00 initial expense = $620 that stayed in my pocket.

I'm sure I'm the only one who does this, but I misplace things. After looking for something for several days, I'll order a new one. Within three days of receiving the new one, I'll find the original.

My latest "misplace" is annoying. I bought my son a $65 box of Hickory Farms goodies. Although it didn't have to be refrigerated, I kept it cool, anyway. At some point, I removed it from the fridge, and I still haven't found it. It's a fairly large box with "Hickory Farms" written all over it. If my dog had found it and eaten it, there would be cardboard all over the floor. I'll look again today, but I'm not hopeful.

One thing I should do is write down where I put things so I can find them in the future. That's been on my To Do List for a couple of years now. It's #67.

I've progressed to being in my late 80's and find as you will that your "Forgetter" has gotten much better than your "Rememberer". As several others have noted, there is stuff you cannot enter into your computer. Many times, if I'm away from the house, what I wanted to remember has been forgotten by the time I get home. There was something else I wanted to share with you but, I have forgotten what it was. lol

We've had some very cold temperatures over the past couple weeks in northwest Illinois, so the river is pretty icy. The eagles are congregating near the Lock and Dam to fish, so this is a great time to watch these magnificent raptors!
I acquired a used 600mm lens and this is the first chance I've had to really try it out. I had a lot of trouble locking and keeping focus on the eagles, so I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong. If anyone has any tips they'd like to share, I'd love to hear them. I was using a Canon 5d Mark IV and a 600mm f/4L II lens with a 1.4 iii Extender. I started with a small focus group, then shifted to center point, thinking I was somehow grabbing focus from the background or something. I use BBF and haven't had this much trouble when using my 100-400 lens, so this is new to me. I was set to Full focusing range, so I don't think that was my problem. Also had myself set up on a monopod, but switched to a tripod.

I'm in my late 80's and suggest a small. red dot gunsight mounted on your hot shoe. B & H can help you put it together. With the sight, after adjusting for parallax, you're looking above the camera with both eyes open; finding and tracking a BIF is much easier.
