To test it, put it on a tripod and take a picture of something static.

Will try that! Looks like I have my work cut out for me!
Thank you!

The lens can produce a sharp image.

Those are some great pics with that lens! I am going to have to do more shooting with this lens to get comfortable with it. I am used to my 18-140 being very sharp, but I have been using that lens for over 2 years now! So, I will leave this new 35mm on my D7200 and make myself use it so that it becomes comfortable as well!
Thank you for posting the awesome pics that you took with the 35mm!

Not a guarantee, but it's something to start with.
Your mileage may vary.

Looks like I have some practicing to do!

Not off by Michael . Apply the crop factor (use the "FF" equivalent) to your camera/lens combo. For an APS-C sensor, that's about 1.5x so use no slower than 1/60th sec to use that old rule of thumb. It originally was for 35mm cameras. You could get away with an even slower shutter with larger format.

I will try that! Thank you!!

So, maybe 1/60 for shutter speed? I did forget to mention in my post that the camera is a D7200, so crop sensor. I was so excited to use it, that I was not really paying attention to shutter speed, I guess the lens can't read my mind! Well back to practicing! Thank you, Bob, for responding so quickly

So, I guess the prime lenses do not come with VR, or that I could find anyway. I was hoping for a fast lens that was tack sharp or pretty darned close. So far I am not finding it with this lens. Maybe I just need to get used to using it, since it is smaller than my 18-140 that I am used to using. Maybe the lens just had such shining reviews that I was expecting much more. I will attempt to post a couple of pictures, the color is very nice, I am happy with that at least!

I purchased the book and had no problem with getting the email with download link. The contact page at http://backcountrygallery.com/contact/ has info about problems with downloading the book. And check your spam/trash email folder.

Yes, for sure check your spam folder! When I ordered my copy the download link went to my spam folder, I checked there before contacting them and there it was! He even sends emails when he does updates to the book, I just received an email about a week ago with a new download of the updated book that includes the new D7500!

Please also remember, for those of you folks using a crop sensor camera, only the angle-of-view is actually impacted by the crop factor. As far as actual magnification and distance compression goes, the lens remains as marked. It's the compression that improves the facial features, so you still need the same actual size lens to help compress the nose. In these cases, a 50 is still a 50 and an 85 is still an 85, compression-wise. Best of luck.

So much to take into consideration! Gets confusing when thinking about making a purchase, am I doing the right thing?, am I making the right choice?, am i going to be happy with my choice? will it do what I need it to do with my particular camera?!!!

I believe your camera is a crop sensor. The 35mm will actually be around 53mm. I don't what your crop factor is I just used 1.5.

Yes, you are right, it is a crop sensor, at 1.5. The 50mm would make it about 75mm which for alot of the shots I take is a little too close. Can't wait to get it and try it out!

You are welcome. Personally, I use prime lenses as much as practicable, even though I own zooms.
Learn to use the 35mm, and you will appreciate the value of a prime.

Thanks! Yes, I plan on putting it on my camera and making myself learn to use it! I am a little nervous about it, but I think I will like it!

You did not make a mistake. The 35mm is a great, very useful lens.

Oh, that is good to know! I have the 18-140mm on my D7200 and I have set it to 35mm to test it and I liked the results, thought that it was a little on the too close side when I set it to 50mm for my liking. Man, never knew choosing such a simple lens could be so hard!! Thank you for making me feel better!

Well, after reading all these comments, I am feeling a bit down as I just ordered the Nikon 35mm 1.8G for my Nikon D7200 this week with their sale. It has super reviews and I thought that I had seen this lens recommended for portraits on here, which is why I did not go for the 50mm as originally planned. Now it has me wondering if I made a mistake. Of course maybe it will still be a good choice for me since I don't do head shots, I do half to full body shots of my grandkids and I was looking for something that would be good in low light and also have great bokeh. Guess I won't know till the brown truck shows up next week!

I like the 18 -140 lens. I love my 7200.

I have the same setup D7200 with an 18-140 lens that stays attached to it, unless I feel I want to switch to my 50mm prime. I love the pics I get with my D7200 and the 18-140! I love my D7200, would not go to the D7500 if I was looking to upgrade, I would go with a D500 instead, but my D7200 does everything I need and more, so I will not be looking to upgrade!
