I'm wondering if that was your true intent, why didn't you just ask the question without the commentary?

It is a good thing to consider ones intent... Bill I felt that expanding on the question was necessary, as I am aware being on his site, for yrs, how often a question goes sideways and turns into a debate about semantics or biases, & regretfully disrespect.. If you noticed I didn't comment on what my preference of camera was but stuck to my original question about why so many, on this site, that use Nikon asks more questions than Canon users.... That was the question... Did I miss any comments you made concerning the question I asked?

YES. That was the question. As I said, I don't think I notice much of a difference among local pros here, but I do see a lot more entry level DSLR Nikons than Canons. I have noticed a preponderance of "white supertelephotos" at sporting events, but as someone pointed out, that's not necessarily a Canon thing exclusively any more.

Hi Andy Yes that was my question, but its becoming more which is better... Not my interest, but wanted some sort of an idea why Nikon users ask more questions. Is it because there are more Nikons per average or does it indicate novice users?

Here's my take on this subject. The average person buying their first DSLR will go Canon because they have name recognition. The average inquisitive person will do some research and find that Nikon has better shadow recover and go that route. I too went with Canon because of the original Digital Rebel and stayed through the T2i. After getting a Sony A57 with EVF I knew that DSLR's were not in my future although I would like to be able to buy a Sony DSLT with Canon EF mount.

I agree , and might add that some might ask a friend that has a camera which one to buy...

Now this is a can of worms, Lee. Both Nikon and Canon make absolutely fantastic photo gear. I can say that at the time I "got into" photography (long time ago) the trade mags were saying that >70% of professional photographers who made a living from 35mm were using Nikon. Canon made a big push to change that and I saw a number of Pro long-time Nikon users switch to canon (Dewitt Jones, George Lepp, etc). Some of my friends did, too. Then, when Canon "switched over to" the EOS system, making their former lenses incompatible with their EOS cameras, I know a few guys who got pissed and dumped Canon for Nikon since Nikon maintained backward compatibility into the AF era and on into Digital. I see a lot of both brands when I am out shooting but I am seeing more and more "low end" Nikons now and I think the gap may be closing, with Canon still the leader in sales.
Now this is a can of worms, Lee. Both Nikon and Ca... (show quote)

Very interesting comment... You are right that it brings out the diehard brand users with a vengeance ... There has to be one that just has a chip on their shoulders and look for an argument... Thanks for your comment..

Does anyone think a class on Basic B/W film complete with darkroom classes would go over just to keep it from completely dying out? I would hate to see it die out. I had so many good times processing and printing.

Hi Rick... After High school I graduated from RCA institute for electronics, to learn how to repair T.V.'s.. there were only at that time, B&W tubes... A few yrs later I had to learn about transistors, since tubes were no longer being used in T.V.'s.... Well I paid for an expensive education and it became useless in a short time.. Furthermore I had to learn about audio since t.v.s became less of a money maker for me.. So you ask, whats your point? ..... Things die out and become useless, as this is the scenario of electronics , computers, phones, and cameras.. It takes a lot of effort to keep up with the latest... Yes it would be fantastic if things would not change, but they do... Keeping up means moving on.. looking to the future... embracing change...

Again, it's not the camera, it's the photographer and his/her vision. How many times do we have a "spiffy" comeback about a good cook must have good pots and pans, but then we get all wrapped up in branding.

I started out as a die hard Canon user, because that's what I had. When my mentor passed away, he left me a lot of Nikon gear (lenses, digital and film bodies... partially as a joke) I switched because I now had more Nikon quality stuff than Canon stuff.

I've known about the Nikon gray lenses for a long time. To me, it was about as big a deal as when they started offering DSLR's in red/yellow, etc. Don't care, and surely wouldn't pay more for something that's just a tool. There are those out there that will only buy a "Stanley" brand hammer, when any hammer will do.

Good luck with your quest to "prove to whoever???" that Canon users are smarter than Nikon users. The main thing is, that people who pray at the alter of any brand of any tool, are the ones that are not too smart. You just need the camera body/lens combination that will capture your vision, regardless of brand.
Again, it's not the camera, it's the photographer ... (show quote)

Bkyser... If you read my OP I am not trying to prove anything.... Nothing at all!!!! [Quote]"Im not making any statement about which camera is better", Im curious about what others here and in the field pro as well as consumers use. It is provocative to suggest anything other than that!! This is not intended to be an argument but a discussion and query!!! I definitely am not trying to prove Canon users are pros and Nikons are not!!!!! Actually I am very interested in those that have Sony.....

Interesting observance. I hadnt noticed more basic.Nikon user questions than with other camera users.

I have noticed that there is generally a lot more canon equipment for sale than Sony or Nikon on the various social sellers markets. I have no idea of the significance of that, either.

I am sure we will all have a lot of input from our group and this will add to what we know... I have found that a lot of photographers sell their cameras to up grade... But with high end there seems to me to be little canon cameras for sale.. Seems its more for an upgrade than preference of manufactures.... Many start out with low end cameras and like you and me purchase higher end cameras as our needs change. Im locked into Canon because of the amount of canon lenses I have that won't work with other manufactures..

I know that when we lock our cameras on a tripod, lens image stabilization should be turned off. What about if the lens is on a gimbal head? Should lens image stabilization be on because of the panning and tilting motion? What do UHH members do when using a gimbal head?

I wondering if using a flash would freeze frame and stabilization won't matter?????

Im not making any statement about which camera is better, but am curious about the large amount of questions here from Nikon users, about basic things... I am wondering if there are more novice photographers here and what they use ... I know I am stirring up a hornets nest, and just for the record I use both...
I see photos on line or on T.V. of pros at events with their Canon cameras and their white long zooms, with only a few other cameras.. Am I making a wrong conclusion, that most pros use Canon and novice hobbies use other brands... I also am aware of Sony, & how popular they are getting.. Now more than 2 choices......
Not sure how I can asses if there are more Canon users than other brands...

Good Morning Folks...
Been searching Amazon for a remote shutter release for my D500,(Nikon). Nikon branded equipment is so costly, and after market stuff really cheap by comparison.
Does anyone have experience with any of these after market products? Ya know, Fathers Day is coming up and questions are being asked.
I appreciate any information offered.

Thanks, Frank

Happy fathers day....http://camranger.com Do more than just trigger your shutter....
Not only can you wirelessly/remotely activate the shutter but you can do all your settings on your iPAD to remotely( up to 150') adjust all camera settings.. Ideal if you do any wild life shooting, or want to take candid shots of your family..... In live view you can frame and focus... instantly change ISO, Av & Shutter... If you cant make out details on the cameras tiny LCD monitor then you will love when you have an iPAD hooked up to it.... I do lots of studio work and its a god send....

I'm not sure if the lighting is too dark. According to the view I am seeing on my screen it doesn't seem that way. Will calibrating give me the correct lighting one will see from other computers?

HI. Golden... By all means calibrate your monitor, but understand it is only calibrating color not brightness... Prints come out darker than what is on your monitor because it is back lit and a print is darker because it is reflective light...
Here is what I do..... With my monitor "color corrected", I go to lightroom and I reduce the blacks and most importantly I use my "shadow" slider to lighten up the midtones till I see good detail..... this will brighten up your prints... Glossy paper will deepen the blacks..... Matte will retain detail...

Art can be learned as can technology. Hence, schools for both. My inherent bent is more towards technology, I am an engineer, but I have learned a lot about the artistic aspect of photography by others who have come before.

I am an artist and feel deeply that art comes from a different part of the brain... yes you can improve skills, but art is more than skills, it's a "creative spirit" that comes to the conscious mind and I can see or am inspired to paint what I see in my conscious mind.... But I also consider the fact that we all have a creative spirit in us, & can with developing skills create! It might show up as a Chef, or an inventor, creating devices like the iPOD,& space devices...... VanGogh only sold 1 painting in his lifetime ( some debate how many but it wasn't many, his genius was not in his ability to paint,( he actually ate paint) but how he saw life and how he painted it..
Just because I can handle a brush and paint on canvas, in no way diminishes the art of other skills. As long as it is heading toward an original idea, thoughts outside the box. The problem with being taught art per se, is that its a learned skill and has to be used with original thought and experimenting with other mediums..

I have always been fascinated shadows ( negative space, absence of anything) see attachment..
If you are taught how to operate a camera & take the same photos year in and out, its not art but a stifled
creative spirit... I try to find subjects that are not so perfect, like B&W of the homeless, old dilapidated structures......

Hi. First time posting!

I'm a 'sometimes' Pro Photographer with 4 successful Weddings under my belt over the last 9 years and 1 as a second shooter. I have a 2:1 degree in Fine Art Photography too.

I say 'sometimes' as I've been a stay at home Mum for 4 years and haven't been taking on any Wedding work. I don't see how anyone does! I'm honestly baffled by the concept of (out of the house) working when you have a small child... if and when I get a moment's chance to string a thought together to do so, before being interrupted by my toddler!

Anyway this weekend my old college friend messaged me to invite me to her wedding and to ask if she could afford me to shoot it. She had a plan B of a hobbiest friend of her other half if not.

It was strange to be back in the nerve-wracking position of revisiting my pricing 4 years on but I got back into it and am currently insured for public liability only, with my main Nikon D700 body broken since last August, which needs either a new mirror or shutter and I'm estimating if it can be fixed that I'll be looking at £500 for that. Otherwise I have my Nikon D300 and little Olympus XZ1 with off camera flash for candid shooting.

So the last wedding I did, I charged £800 for a digital on personalised USB stick package. And 4 years on I figured £900 was reasonable, considering I need to travel to another city and stay the night, plus fuel and a reckie trip before, hire of a couple of lenses, possibly a body too.

Anyway, I put the figure to my friend but she said she'd have to decline as the budget is too tight and she's prioritizing the clothes and a party feel plus a short honeymoon after. (She has two kids 8 and 1). She said she'll just get her hobbiest friend to try their best and if she just gets one great shot of the four of them she'll be happy. [Eyeroll]

On Facebook I've already seen she's ordered a fairly expensive dress from a lovely bridal shop.

I tried to advise her of the priority I felt photography should take in her budget and that I'd seen many mediocre albums of friends before.

I even suggested my favourite female photographer in my area, who shot a friend's Wedding but who is also 'in essence' my dream local competitor. (She's an active pro with a hundred Weddings under her belt, so out of my league professionally.) She charges £1100 for a digital package locally.

I let her know of the problems a November Wedding could encompass re: poor light and blurry indoor photos but none of this is swaying her.

I just feel awful because I feel it's a disaster waiting to happen and that shell regret it in future years and almost just want to do the gig to make sure she gets some great shots, even if just for a shorter time frame (main shots) but feel this is selling myself short, as I'll still put the same amount of stress and effort into it and get the insurance, plus hire lenses etc.

For another set of friends locally before my £800 gig, I charged £550 but I don't even think she'd pay that and I'd find it hard to make it worth my while at all with all my costs. I've no other Wedding booked till a possible friend's next December, so insurance alone every month will be £20 to maintain professional indemnity cover.

So, just looking for opinions.

In case it isn't obvious, should I just keep out of it now and stick with being a guest, or take it on for much less?

I am a bit pissed that the other vendors are getting paid but she's looking for the photography to be the bit that can be done on the cheap!

I agree, Steve. I was born without one artistic gene in my body....while having an abundance of mechanical/technical/problem-solving abilities. In art classes, I learned about perspective, colors, light/shading, textures, etc. I will never be an artist....can't even draw a stick figure. But over the years, I have been able to produce some very appealing photographic images. I believe that if you admit that something can't be learned, it never will be.

Not sure about you NOT having any artistic talents.. Drawing and painting are just one way to express creativity.. Drawing for me at a very young age was how I learned to see things.. It was sort of short hand notes about what I wanted to understand. Photography is just another way to express creativity, by going outside the box and breaking rules to discover insight...
I feel we are all creative and express it in different mediums... My son is a pastry chef that does more than bake but does chocolate sculptures.. He has stepped out of the box of conformity & expresses his own thoughts & feelings... When you stop taking landscapes and beach sunsets, & begin to look around at other things in life, you can find the "out of ordinary" subject matter, & maybe finding B&W photography .... Taking shots of the family and discovering your beautiful grandchild playing alone.... A moment in time! Precious!
