"The outbreak looks vastly different today than it did just a couple of weeks ago.

At the start of March, 70 cases had been reported in the United States, most of them tied to overseas travel.

Since then, new cases have poured in, including more than 200 announced on Monday in New York State alone.

More than 2,200 cases have been announced nationwide since Friday morning, and the virus is now spreading in parts of the country where it had not been identified as recently as a week ago.

The coronavirus has now been identified in all 50 U.S. states, and more than 100 deaths in the country have been linked to the illness.

Those known deaths,

all from the past three weeks,

come as the number of diagnoses has surged into the thousands as the virus has spread and as testing has expanded significantly."

"On "The Five" Monday, host Jesse Watters admitted that he "didn't take the social distancing that serious" over the weekend.

Watters said he "went out to dinner" in NYC. "And I woke up this morning I realized that was not the right move.

I am no longer going out to dinner," Watters said. The contrast between last week and this week was visually on display as well.

"The Five," like other shows on Fox and other networks, practiced social distancing on Monday's episode."

"Last Monday, Tucker Carlson delivered a warning on his Fox News show. He said the coronavirus posed a great threat.

He said it was much more severe than the flu. And he said that people have "spent weeks minimizing what is clearly a very serious problem."

While he delivered that monologue, his colleague Trish Regan was on Fox Business dismissing coronavirus as nothing more than an attempt to impeach Trump."

There is no such thing as a foreign virus.

"For immigration historians and other scholars, the way US President Donald Trump is describing the coronavirus pandemic has a familiar ring.

"This is the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a foreign virus in modern history," Trump said in an Oval Office address Wednesday night. "I am confident that by counting and continuing to take these tough measures we will significantly reduce the threat to our citizens and we will ultimately and expeditiously defeat this virus."

As soon as Trump's words describing a "foreign virus" hit the airwaves, Nükhet Varlik knew she'd heard them before.

"We've had plenty of examples of this in the past. It's mindblowing that this still continues," said Varlik, an associate professor of history at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, and at the University of South Carolina.

"It opens up the ways of thinking about disease in dangerous ways," she said. "Once you open that door...historically we have examples, we know where it goes. And we don't want to go there. I find it extremely dangerous.""

I just hope we have a little better handle on it now then Italy did then.

I don't know we had a slow start.

Some states seem to be doing more than others; here in Kentucky & Indiana bars & restaurants are take out only .

They have delayed the Kentucky Derby.

"The US surgeon general said Monday that the United States is about where Italy was two weeks ago in the coronavirus struggle, a sign that infections are expected to rise in America as the government steps up testing and financial markets continue to fall.

“We are at a critical inflection point in this country, people,” Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams told Fox News. “When you look at the projections, there’s every chance that we could be Italy.” Yet he said the US has opportunities to mitigate the public health crisis.

Two weeks ago, Italy had 1,700 cases of coronavirus and had reported 34 deaths. Now, Italy is reporting an estimated 25,000 cases and more than 1,800 deaths. About 3,800 cases have been reported in the United States and so far, more than 65 people have died from coronavirus. "

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Public health and national security experts shake their heads when President Donald Trump says the coronavirus “came out of nowhere” and “blindsided the world.”

They’ve been warning about the next pandemic for years and criticized the Trump administration’s decision in 2018 to dismantle a National Security Council directorate at the White House charged with preparing for when, not if, another pandemic would hit the nation.

“It would be nice if the office was still there,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institute of Health, told Congress this week. “I wouldn’t necessarily characterize it as a mistake (to eliminate the unit). I would say we worked very well with that office.”

The NSC directorate for global health and security and bio-defense survived the transition from President Barack Obama to Trump in 2017.

Trump’s elimination of the office suggested, along with his proposed budget cuts for the CDC, that he did not see the threat of pandemics in the same way that many experts in the field did.

“One year later I was mystified when the White House dissolved the office, leaving the country less prepared for pandemics like COVID-19,” Beth Cameron, the first director of the unit, wrote in an op-ed Friday in The Washington Post."
