No, it makes no difference if you know how to use your camera and lens correctly.

I recently watched this video about using a digital teleconverter. Years ago the wisdom was to Never use one. However I am now very tempted to try and set it up and use one of my Custom modes. Have any of you tried using the digital teleconverter in your camera. It will only give you a jpeg file, and can not be used for BIF shots.
This is the link to what I watched:

Have watched the video and he makes a strong case for the use of digital teleconverters. I have been using DSLRs for many years and like you have always understood that photographs taken using the digital teleconverter function seldom resulted in a good photograph. I wonder, however, if his findings would be the same for all camera makes and models. Why not buy a teleconverter instead? Are the results the same for FF cameras as compared to DX. Seems to me there needs to be "a whole lot of testing going on" before we will really know whether "to DT or not to DT"

I am going to Europe this summer and will likely want to shoot from inside a train or bus and want to eliminate window glare. I know there are rubber lens hoods that screw into filter threads, but I remember seeing something that isn’t lens diameter specific so it can be used with different lenses or cameras.

Any advice for shooting scenery through windows?

Have you made your train and/or bus reservations? My son is currently in Europe, and he says that the crowds are already starting to build. He recommends that you make your reservations now, don't wait much longer. The trains between cities frequently travel at high speeds, 130-140 mph. Not many, if any, opportunities to take pictures when on these trains. The excursion trains, of course, travel at much slower speeds. My nephew and his family just got back from a 10-day bus tour of Europe (if it's Tuesday then this must be ??). He said the focus of his bus was to get you from point A to point B. not on seeing scenic sights. As with the trains there are bus tours that do focus on sightseeing. I have used a rubber lens hood pressed against a train and bus window to take pictures. For me, the key to success was to use a high shutter speed in order to reduce camera shake caused by the bus or train. But it was usually a hit and miss experience because I had no control over the lighting and didn't always know when something interesting was coming into view. Have someone drive you around and practice taking pictures out the side window while travelling at different speeds. Camera lens against the window or hand holding. On a recent sightseeing trip to Texas I took several pictures out the side window of a truck. Used high shutter speeds, wide angle lens and held the camera close to the window but not touching it. Did not use a CL filter. Maybe a third were OK. The further away the subject was from the highway, the better the picture. Good luck, have a safe trip and let us know how it went.

I always format my cards when they go into a camera, even if the same one.
It does a better job of removing the old images than delete, and thus avoids one more thing that might corrupt new image files.

And if I do put the card into a different camera or brand of camera, doing it every time avoids the possibility of forgetting to do it when it is really needed. It only takes a few seconds.

Thank you everyone for your great suggestions. Even though many of you suggested the Sony RX100 VII, I wound up purchasing the Canon G7X Mark III.

I went to Best Buy to look at all of the suggested cameras, picked them up, held them, put them to my eye, and the G7X felt the best and easiest to use. The front grip was the clincher. It was just the most comfortable to hold and use.

I researched all of the brands on the internet with many sites suggesting Sony, Canon or Panasonic as the best. So, Photographically, any one would be fine as a travel camera, but, I found that the Canon G7X had the best feel and best grip. So, I bought the Canon G7X Mark III, on line, at B&H, and am loving it.

Thanks again for all your great suggestions and responses.

That's what I call doing it the right way. Have often wondered how many people have purchased a camera over the internet and found it uncomfortable to use. It's surprising how much of a difference there is between camera brands. Even within brands.

I was in the same boat earlier this year. I upgraded my computer and wanted to migrate a previously purchased version of Elements 12 to my new computer. It would load but not open and run properly. So after fiddling with it for a couple of hours, I bit the bullet and purchased Elements 23. It's a huge improvement over the older version and well worth the price. Just sayin'.....

I just had my laptop overhauled and a new processing unit installed. In the process, I no longer have Adobe Photoshop Elements 15. It had originally come with my laptop and I did not pay for it in any way. Trying to find a download, it appears that I will need to buy it or have a monthly fee. I have been happy with it and thought I would continue using it (don't do a lot of advanced PP - just the more basic). My questions:
- can I download and have it free (am I just missing something)?
- if I need to pay for it, should I consider upgrading to the more recent Elements programs?

I use PSE all the time. Adobe is constantly selling the latest version of PSE for $69.95. I upgrade every two or three years.

In a few weeks, I am going to accomplish one of my “bucket list” desires. I am going to Alaska. Although cruising is not my ideal mode of travel, I am still looking forward to it. I am debating on whether to take my Nikon and lenses or just use my iPhone. Seems to me that I will not have much opportunity to take great photos….not sure. I guess I need to be convinced to haul that extra weight around. Thoughts are appreciated!

Will be going on the inside passage cruise in August. Have looked at several videos on YouTube that talk about what camera gear to take on the cruise. Your iphone might suffice for photographs on the ship, but not for the scenery you will be seeing. I will be taking a Canon FF and four lenses: 16mm, 50mm, 24-105mm, and 100-400mm. Will also be taking a monopod but many here on UHH think that I will not need one.

Scott Kelby has a great video on YouTube where he talks about using your iphone as a backup camera.

Home or pro is marketing. You buy a computer based on intended use. For post processing you need a bunch of RAM, a fairly fast CPU and a fast graphics card. Post processing is less intense then what the serious gamers need, but greater than what a secretary doing word processing needs.

Of the various sites that buy used equipment - Adorama, B&H, KEH Camera and others I may not know about - who in most Hoggers opinion is the best, fairest' responsive and trustworthy.

Have dealt with B&H on several occasions over the past 20 years. Not had any problems. Whether selling or trading they always paid the estimated amount.

A friend just purchased at my suggestion a Sony RX10IV. She has no photography experience except for her phone but wanted a good camera and one she did not have to change lenses. I suggested a number of other cameras but she chose this one. I say that because knowing UHH members as I do someone will offer suggestions on other cameras they like she could have bought. She wanted THIS camera and was not interested in any other. Now that question is answered here is my question.

I have a MacPro and use the Mac Photos program to process my photos. But she has a PC and Windows 10. Can someone suggest a free program she can get into that would do similar things as my Photos program does. At this point she will not be interested in Photoshop or Lightroom.

I appreciate any suggestions,

Dennis

I agree with Max, Elements is a good place to start. Can get on sale for a one time price of $69. Can chose the level to use for editing, Quick, Guided or Expert. Many times I have watched tutorials for Lightroom or Photoshop and applied them to Elements with great success.

Thank you all for responding to my question. It's a big ship. I think that I will take a monopod with me. I will have room in my suitcase and rather have it in case I need it than leave at home and wish I had it. I am 81 with sore back and shaking hands so who knows how that will turn out. The wife demanded a room with a balcony so am hoping I can take a lot of photos from there. I normally shoot ISO 200 but will try using different camera settings until I get it right. Am thinking about using a pillow with the monopod to help eliminate camera shake caused by the ship's engine. Again, thank you all for sharing your thoughts on this issue.
