Give SONY cameras a good hard look. They are moving in on the "big 2"
I am SERIOUSLY considering the A99. I have the NEX 6 which has the APS-C sensor, but I also want to venture into the full frame world. I don't agree that SONY is abandoning the "full size" type camera in favor of the compact camera. There is a certain feel and balance (with lenses) to a full size camera that you don't have with a compact camera. I think SONY recognizes that, and will continue to support the advancement of the A99 type camera. I think it comes down to what you really are looking for. I already have a compact camera in the NEX 6, and absolutely love it. I don't want another compact camera, and I don't own a full size type camera. With regard to lenses, there are a number of A frame Zeiss lenses made for the A99. I think they will continue to develop lenses for the A99.
The Alpha 99 is about $1,000 more than the A7, but to me its the better buy for a full frame camera. It has the EVF and in camera stabilization. Also, there are more lenses available with the A mount, including the old Minolta lenses. It is a well balanced camera with A mount lenses (as opposed to the imbalance of a longer lense on a compact camera). If you are interested in the SONY compact cameras, the NEX 6 is an excellent choice at a MUCH reduced price. It does have the APS-C sensor, but the IQ is excellent. It also has an EVF.
Elanor, what camera did you shoot those with?
The green flash absolutely exists. It occurs just before the last spec of the sun goes under the horizon. I was in Marco Island, which is SW Florida, using the video on my camera. I captured the green flash on the video. Very cool!!
You should check out the SONY NEX 6. It has an electronic view finder, and image quality is excellent.
Excellent shot! As a beginner photographer, I am always amazed at the clarity of shots like this!!
It makes sense to me that the image is made by the photographer, not the equipment. However, once you have mastered composition, why not have the best equipment, which would lead you to FF. The Sony Alpha 99 has two features that are important to me. The EVF (obviously i am not a purist!) I find very useful. Also, the in-camera stabilization seems useful,. It also apparently has a superior AF capability to some of the other FF cameras i have researched. The Canon EOS 6D, which is about $1,000 cheaper FF, seems to be right up there. However, as I mentioned, it has an OVF, and no in-camera stabilization.
the clarity of these photos is magnificent. nice job!!
Thank you all for your comments. All very helpful. My takeaway from everyone is to stick with the NEX 6 for the moment. Although there are obviously better cameras out there, when I am ready to upgrade, I will know it, and won't have to ask.
f8lee, your point is not lost on me. I understand the best equipment in the hands of the inexperienced (me) doesn't compensate for a great photo. That being said, my thinking is to cover the range of possibilities with a compact camera, the NEX 6, (ie: for travel, etc), and a more serious camera (full frame) to get the most as i develop my skills. The point that resonates with me is whether it makes sense for me to jump into that league at this point.
Thank you all for your input! I can already tell UHH will be a wonderful forum! I am new to the photography world, shooting for about 6 months. But like everything I do, I have jumped in fully with total passion!! I am loving it, and would love to learn from all of you! I am currently shooting with the SONY NEX 6, which uses the APS-C sensor (not full frame). It doesn't make sense to me to invest in another APS-C camera (ie: Nikon 7100). I am on the fence as to whether I should make the significant investment into the full frame (ie: SONY Alpha 99). I happen to love the EVF and stabilization aspects of SONY (have it with the NEX 6).
i am considering purchasing the SONY Alpha 99 full frame camera. Looking for opinions about this camera vs. other full frame cameras such as the Nikon D600 and the Canon EOS 6D. Thanks.
Just signed up for UHH. I have the SONY NEX 6. Wondering if moving to the Nikon 7100 or Canon EOS 70D makes any sense, since they all have the APS-C sensor. Or does it make sense to move to the full frame. Any opinions on the SONY Alpha 99 vs. Canon EOS 6D vs. the Nikon D600? Thanks.
