Dria, Plan to catch them still and also playing and let the chips fall where they may. At our last concert we had a guy forget his tux coat, can you believe that. He played anyway with his white shirt. Maybe he will forget the coat again and I can focus on his shirt for a reading. So much black.

got it.

Think of slow shutter speed..probably NOT a good idea due to ghosting movement in an orchestra. UNLESS you have a set time for them to be still.

Dixie, Well said and thanks. By the way, I am a member of the group and they are letting me take off this concert in order to do this. Seems they like my pictures but after this I might be retired from the trombone section.(forever).

Yes chap, i will be using a remote. The good news is that I will get a chance to visit the auditorium the week before the shoot so I can play around with the advise I am getting. I do wildlife 99% of the time so this is going to be fun. I am sure that among the members of the group there is some wild life(pun), so I am looking forward to a real learning experience. Thanks for you comments. Very helpful.

I have been asked to take shots of a 74 member orchestra at a concert. Black tux and black dresses. black music stands. carpet dark blue. background off white. Lights seem to be directly over head for reading music and its seems to be tunsten light- the stage type large round lights. Using Canon 60d (if it wakes up) with a tokina 19-35 wide-angle lens or canon 100-400 lens if needed. No flash. What setting etc...(on tripod by the way).

My 60d went to sleep on me a couple of times last time out. I am using canon lens, battery grip with two freshly charged batteries. When I start to take a picture it will not focus. I hit the live view shooting button to take the picture which seems to wake the camera up because I then can go back to view finder and everything seems ok. I have ordered two new batteries thinking that the ones I have might be suspect even tho' they show that they are completely charged. Wonder if anyone else has had this problem. Have not had the camera very long so I am still trying to figure out the bells and whistles.
