Most dSLR's use proprietary batteries, so the cost for extras might come into play.

The type of memory cards used might be important - personally, I'd suggest ONLY CF (Compact Flash) or SD (Secure Digital). Because they are readily available world wide, with SD's gaining a lot of popularity.

Next, evaluate what quality of equipment you already have. My dad & grandpa used to shoot Minolta's... has some great glass, back in the day. The Sony A-series uses THOSE LENS' - so when dad wanted to go digital, that is what I put him in, and he's got like 6 or 7 different lens that work with the A-series Sony body, which also takes standard AA batteries, and has the image stabilization build into the body. He's been very happy.

Myself, and my kids shoot Canons - big, heavy, but generally worth it for sports action shooting. Instantaneous shutter reaction time, and the fastest focusing and continuous shooting, when necessary.

One of my sisters loves her Nikon... easy to use, her only frustration is indoor sports action of her kids... she can't do it without spending a pile on an f2.8 lens. I've tried to tell her that she's lucky, as that same f2.8 lens in the Canon world is $7 to 2500 (just for the 70-200 f2.8)... whereas in the Nikon world they can be had for a lot less. So, lens cost and ability to do the type of shooting you want is important.

Lastly, options... accessories... lens, battery chargers, batteries, remotes, triggers, etc. etc. etc. IF you think you MIGHT be wanting or using them in the future, it's best to price them out before spending money on a body.

Personally, I think glass is the most important... with megapixels second... if all else is equal. Megapixels allow more (or less) cropping, as necessary. And crappy glass, well... that's part of the difference between snapshots & photographs (the sharpness, focus, focusing speed, details, ability to do the job correctly, as you picture it before the shutter is depressed).

Best of luck... you've probably already purchased by now... but maybe the information in this thread will help others think about some things they otherwise wouldn't have.
