FedEx AND UPS

I shipped my son's birthday present to his house in Houston. On Saturday I got a delivery confirmation that at 2:38 PM the package was left at son's front door - which is behind a 6' fence and gate. Confirmation of delivery. Son arrives home - NO package. Tracking number checks. Went to UPS.com to file a claim and wandered in circles trying to figure out how. No luck.

Son says wait until COB Monday, it has happened before. Yep. Monday PM the package is delivered with another delivery confirmation. Go figure. A fake out? Practice? Delivery was not due until Monday so they retrieved the package and held until Monday for a "proper" delivery. Amazon takes a picture of the package and I like that. No ghosts.

When setting up for a macro photo, what hardware is recommended to stage the subject. Say a beetle, or a rose. The tripod or equivalent is a given.

I tired to find an alligator clip with stand to pose a rose by clamping the stem. No luck.

How to do it guys? Pictures please and source of the items a big help.

Many credit cards (Visa/Master Card) double the manufacture's warranty. One year becomes two years. To qualify for this coverage a copy of the warranty and the purchase receipt are required. In example you buy a photo printer with a one-year manufacture's warranty paying $500 using your Costco/Citi Visa. 14-months later the printer clogs up and the authorized repair facility requires you to ship the printer and the usual cost for this repair is $420. With this estimate, copy of the warranty, and receipt submitted to Citi, you get a check most likely for $500. Problem solved. I have personally saved several thousand dollars over the years using this benefit.

AND IT IS FREE!

One more quick note about befunky.com

Below is a screenprint of what I see when I click SAVE: note the location choices in the dropdown menu at top of page. I always choose computer. When you select computer, you then get a new window with choices of file type, name, quality... and then when you click save again, you will see the file manager of your computer. Select the folder in which you want to save the result.

Hello Linda, a question.

I have the 10/month Adobe package and do all of my D850 editing in Camera Raw as I am adverse to all of the problems associated with the Adobe file management in Lightroom and PS. As I think about making a change your comment on PS Elements caught my eye.

Does PS Elements require the import into their file system to edit the picture?
Can PS Elemants edits be saved in the original .nef format or does it create a second version in .??? making file organization and backup more complicated?

I simply manage my file organization with a date & brief description i.e. 2020-05-18 Wood Boat Trip. Most are saved in their raw format after any edits.

Your comment please.

Note your Yakima location. I lived in Federal Way for 18-years, spent many weeks making loud noise at Yakima Firing Center, and my wife was a farmer's daughter in Pasco. Now this years world's best sweet cherries from the Yakima area are arriving in Fort Myer's Costco much to my overeating pleasure.

Your suggestions please on how to photograph a bright sunny day through a window while capturing the interior of the window wall showing correctly exposed furniture in the foreground. The idea is to show the outside landscape view from inside the house.

I am shooting a D850, Nikkor 24-70 and tried with a SB 800 to fill-flash the interior. Mixed results.

What say you?

If you bought the lens with a credit card - Visa Master Card AX - most have a benefit of doubling the warranty.* If so and you have a copy of the six month warranty, proof of purchase, and you are now less than a year, the credit card company/issuing bank will reimburse you the cost of your repairs. Even if you are beyond the 12-months but had the repairs done during the extended warranty you may be in luck.

Check it out remembering Monday is MLK & a bank holiday.

When I buy an item of value i make a copy of the invoice (proof of purchase), and staple them with the product's warranty statement into a file folder, adding the items manual with the documents. The bank will require these documents to support your claim. The file folders are labeled with the alphabet so a Nikon item goes into the "N" folder.

This benefit obtained by saving the required documents has saved me THOUSANDS of dollars. Really! And it is FREE with the right credit card like the Costco/Citi Visa.

*A longer extended warranty i.e. 5-years is usually only extended by one year.

No Jim.
As I said it is a separate policy with a separate premium. Noting to do with Homeowners or Auto.

I live in CA (don't hold against me) and I would like to insure my camera equipment. I'm an amateur photographer and I plan on taking several workshops over the next year or so worldwide. I would like to insure my equipment for damage, theft or just getting it lost or stolen. Is there a company that insures photography equipment for just the cost of replacing your gear. Most of the insurance companies are to protect professional photographers from messing up somebody's wedding pictures!

Thank you in advance for your recommendations and suggestions.

If you qualify for USAA Insurance company having served in the military or your parents did, USAA offers a Personal Articles Floater for cameras, jewels, and fire arms. This policy provides ALL RISK replacement cost coverage for a very modest sum. All risk means if your drop your camera/lens or there is mysterious disappearance of the item you are covered to the replacement cost of a like item. Some years ago my Nikon rolled out the back of my SUV overhead door and the Nikon quoted cost to repair was $1800. A new camera was $ 2,000 so they sent me a check for $2.000 as the risk of finding additional damage on undertaking the repair was not worth their risk. I have been with USAA for >50 years (I started at age 19) for Auto and All Risk. They stopped homeowners in Florida some years ago. They are 5-stars!

Totally correct.

Might a concept to do a Win 10 update on the original Win 7 C drive, remove it, then do a second install of Win 10 on the new SSD for a clean install reloading all the apps. That will leave the old C drive perhaps operable when designated as the boot drive in the BIOS. Drive letter changed or both come out C? Could they both be in the same computer and for what gain?

Apologies as this is a computer related question not photography, understanding that we all have to have functional computers in support of our digital cameras.

In a few weeks Microsoft will stop sending all but daily security updates for our Windows 7 powered computers. I have purchased Windows 10 Ultimate, MS Office 2019, and several Samsung 1T SSDs to install on my custom built desktop machine.

In the many years past I always did a "clean" installation of the latest Windows operating system on a blank formatted internal hard drive to have the best chance to be trouble free, then laboring to do a new installation of the programs/apps (several dozen).

This year, slightly different. My plan is to remove the C drive containing Win 7-64 from the computer (unplug the drive), disconnect all external hard/SSD drives, printers, card readers, etc., leaving only the mouse, monitor and the desktop. Install the brand new internal 1T SSD, load Windows 10 and MS Office 2019 and all updates. This would of course be my C Drive and boot drive.

The old C drive is then reinstalled (aka connected) to the computer allowing the internal transfer of data files, music, etc to the new C drive. Additionally as a number of my programs/apps were downloaded - no program disk - and all apps require license information to establish ownership, that license key is usually found in the program still installed on the old C drive. Who knows how much of the hundreds of program settings, preferences, can be accessed for integration with the new app installation saving countless hours.

My question kind UHH-ers:
How to prevent the old C drive trying to act as the boot drive when the computer is restarted? Yes, the new boot drive is designated in Computer Management however I would like to "kill" the Win 7-64 so it won't try to load anything or get confused.

On the other hand, If I try to start a program on the old C drive to obtain license/preferences/setup info, where will it look for an operating system to run? So, should I leave Win 7 functional?

What say you?

I have the CD but haven’t figured out how to install it...very frustrated with that.
I’ll give it another shot...thanks.

Hi Art,

Affinity Photo does not save changes to a RAW format such as .nef but rather to its own file format of .afphoto to allow for future editing of the original file or exported to a standard image format such as .tiff, .jpg, .png

Affinity Photo does not require exclusive access to your photo directories

We offer a free 10 day trail of Affinity Photo so you can see if the program meets your needs.

Many thanks,

i join the search for an editor that does not require photos to be imported and then managed ONLY with their program. Way too confusing, especially given the 40,000 pictures on my hard drives. This ideal program should work as well as Adobe Camera Raw saving the edits in the RAW format. Again KISS applies.

I would like to use Lightroom if the above criteria are met.

For a few dollars a year an all risk insurance policy would cover either the cost of repairs or a new D750 and perhaps the lens. This has been a very cost effective with one $2,000 claim 15-years ago. USAA writes these policies if you are a member.
