I have a d7100 with tamron 18-270,been thinking of going over to the Omd em1 with 12-40 pro lens,(to start with)mostly shoot landscape, pictures of our dog & holidays, question is will I notice much IQ difference?, I don't normally print large and mostly put pictures on iPad for viewing,

Given that your viewing requirements are so undemanding you will almost certainly not see a difference.

If you were doing demanding (high dynamic range) landscape photography you would definitely see a difference in the shadows.

There is about a 1 2/3 stop advantage in favor of the D7100 at ISO 100. http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Nikon%20D7100,Olympus%20OM-D%20E-M1

You can't go wrong with any choice if you do your homework. People spouting off statistics and technical numbers that will very likely make zero difference to your images does not help you in your decision.
Go to a camera store with a memory card, put it in each of the cameras and take a bunch of shots in the store. Take the card home and see if there is enough difference to warrant any extra cost. At least then you will know if the camera is superior for your needs and not someone else's.

For me "doing my homework" includes looking at the technical numbers; because there quite a bit I can't test at the camera store (assuming one is handy).

I'm still curious to know if the OP is sure they want to go to FX and if so what they expect to gain.

Well you really have to read their testing explanations in depth to understand what's being said. It's an engineers approach to camera testing not in every case a photographers. Nonetheless their metrics hold up in terms of overall ranking when compared with this other testing site. http://home.comcast.net/~NikonD70/Charts/PDR.htm

P.S. For those of a technical mind who enjoy talking about the relative merits of equipment Bill Claff has a site that does much the same as dxomark. Many believe his results are more real world than dxomark. They feel PDR (photographic dynamic range) is a more realistic measurement of a cameras abilities. ;) pith

An old post to be sure but FWIW ...
I moved my web site so if you ever see home.comcast.net/~nikond70 in a URL you should change that to www.photonstophotos.net

From my tests I would expect no visible difference in Image Quality (IQ) between the D750 and the D810.

Any particular reason that you want to go to Full Frame (FX)?

Was DX not working for you for some reason?

Ha! I didn't even notice that, and thought it was the "Charts" vs "Investigations" in the path! :-)

Turns out that is a very different chart all together.

Yes, the URL you found is an old Excel table that I ought to obsolete but it serves as a reminder to me that I have better unpublished data.

Oops, case sensitive !
The correct URL is http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/Sensor_Characteristics.htm

My name is Bill Claff and photography has been part of my life since I was a teenager.
I have a wide variety of photographic interests.
I'm also intrigued with sensor technology and have quite a bit of technical information at my site.
In the past 10+ years I have accumulated the largest collection of non-commercial sensor data that I know of.
It's possible you have heard of my Photographic Dynamic Range (PDR) which predates the DxOMark Landscape score.
I'm always looking for more data so if you have a camera that I have not tested, and it can produce raw files, I'd love to hear from you.

But as I noted, there simply is no counter. None. Zip, zilch, nada!

There is an analog voltmeter.

Edit: check out this site.

http://www.sensorgen.info/

Note the specific values for e- given for saturation... and the same units are used for read noise in fractions of 1/10.

Bob does seem to update sensorgen any more.
But I have essentially the same information at http://www.photonstophotos.net (and I think my charts are prettier).
The first section of my site are my measurements.
The second section are DxOMark derived measurements like those at sensorgen.

For saturation (Full Well Capacity (e-)) you probably want http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/Sensor_characteristics.htm
Note the sortable table below the chart.

For input-referred read noise you want my measurements at http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_e.htm when available otherwise the DxOMark derived measurements at http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/ReadNoise_e.htm

If anyone reading this finds that I have no measurements on their camera, and you're willing to help me collect the appropriate raw files; I'd like to hear from you by email (bottom of my site) or Private Message (PM)

Regards,
Bill
