I recently purchased a Western Digital My Cloud. It can be placed anywhere in your home (or business) that you have access to your network and can be accessed from anywhere with a wifi or phone signal. This allows me to use documents that I have placed on the device, such as the camera manual or techniques and tips I have picked up and saved as documents over the years. I have the 3 terabyte version and I really like it.

Hello fellow Hoggers and Hoggets. I need your help and expert advice. Time to clean up my computer. I have a mac and need to transfer my Lightroom catalog to one convenient place. Which portable hard drive do I get and how big? If necessary I'll buy 2 so I can have backup. I shoot RAW with a D800 Nikon, so the files are large. Thanks

I have been using the Nikon 50mm 1.8 for years with great success. If you are able to shoot from the sidelines this might be something to look at.

I am taking HS basketball pics. I have been using my 18-140 Nikkor lens on my D7000. I have an 80-200 f2.8 but I don't really need it as high school gyms are of a size that allows me to get close enough to use a smaller lens. In fact, I almost never go all the way out to 140.
I would like to shoot at a lower ISO than 4-5K which I have to do with the 18-140. If I go down much I need a flash which while producing OK pictures, the flash is not good for the players if I am sitting on the line. Im thinking that the Sigma 17-70 f2.8 would be perfect or the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 would work well too.
What do you, the experts, think?

Just went to my "local" store(35 miles away but well wort the trip to me) and asked about a grip for my camera. Nikon lists it at $616 but Adorama sells it for $399. Store was willing to sell it for $439. The advice and service I have gotten from this store is worth far more to me than the extra $40. I will deal local any chance I get.

I would just like to add that if you have a local business, you can always call them and give them a shot. Just be up-front that you are looking at that item online at such and such a cost.
Maybe on a $500 lens they will only make $50, but it will be their call to make something, as opposed to nothing!
Try it if you'd like them there when you really need them. ;-)

When shooting indoors with poor lighting you should also manually set your white balance.
b8campbell wrote:
The lighting was very poor where I shot so I had to make several adjustments to the shutter speed and ISO to get the quality I wanted. One side of the building had floor to ceiling windows that cast a glare onto the water. I ended up at 1/400s at ISO 1600 for some pretty decent shots.

I'm not sure what land tour means for you but if you are going into Denali I can't imagine shooting there without some sort of support. At the very minimum a monopod, but a tripod seems necessary. I never did the cruise part so I can't speak to that. The scenery continually changes and is very expansive, shooting without support may affect the quality of your images.

If I am planning a cruise and land tour to Alaska next summer will there be room or time to use a tripod or will I be in a mass of people that really won't allow for it? I have a big heavy Bogen that I use around home and on driving trips but it wouldn't be a good choice for packing (or carrying!).

I have been to B&H, and while I have never been treated poorly, the place was just so busy and popular I felt I was being rushed. That could be more my thought process than truth, it was just humming in the sore whenever I visited. It is truly a great place to walk around, just leave your credit card home. I now use a local camera store that takes all of the time I need to answer questions, make suggestions, and help guide me. Perhaps you should see if there is one near you.

I've always felt that the photo labs have far better equipment than I could afford to buy. I just don't think anything I use could measure up to a multi-thousand dollar machine.

Hi folks! What is your opinion on printing your photos. I do like enlargements of my better work. Do I invest in quality equipment to print at home, or rely on a custom lab? Pros and Cons please. Thank you all. :-D Mike J.

I use them regularly and am very pleased with their work.
NikonJohn wrote:
They have very reasonable rates for prints, I ordered seven 11x14 glossy prints and it was around $33 including shipping (which is free if you order $50 or more), my shipping was $7.00. I sent the order electronically Tuesday night about 10:30 p.m. and got a shipping conformation email Wednesday (the next day) at about 1:00 p.m. If the prints look good I will certainly order more from them. I think that's cheaper than I could print them myself. I will keep you all posted when I get the prints as to how they look. I sent jpg's but I think next time I may try sending tif's and see if they look any better.
Anybody else have experience with them?

I'm not sure what camera you are using but there is no sport setting on the D300.
Dannie wrote:
I have experimented with the ISO setting on my camera, but wasn't sure which would work better, but I guess you have to try each setting once you get to a place and see which one works the best. I have tried on the 1600 setting this morning and used the sport setting to see if that would work with my own dogs, it wasn't too bad, dog was in focus, and that is all I want mainly LOL. Just with the responses from everyone I have learned allot. I love taking pictures. The paw picture is from a little fujifilm 3.2mp 6x zoom. When that stopped working I bought the Nikon kit as it was on sale and I needed a camera asap, growing grandchildren also LOL Thank you all for quick responses :)

You don't mention what lenses you have. Do you have any low light lenses? I shoot with a D300 also and get pretty good results using a 50mm 1.8 lens when shooting high school sports, certainly not the best lighting out there.

This is simply an addition (rider) to my homeowners. you need to check with your homeowners or renters insurance to see what is available to you. I believe it is far more expensive to get a separate policy. Sorry about the delay, I was unavailable for the weekend.

My hat goes off to anyone that is self employed. I owned a small grocery store for 15 years and if income determines success, i was not very successful. Had fun but didn't make much. I admire those that can do this well. I guess I may fit the quote "Those that can do..." however I teach high school math and bring photography into the classroom whenever possible. I really enjoy keeping my mind young working with these kids.

Hats off to you as a "public school teacher" I hope you are one of the good ones! Not to be in the dog house or even worse to be bear-bait but you know every month where and how much you will earn. Being successfully self employed you really don't know month to month what you will be bringing in. Been there and done that and my hat is off to MT. Shooter for his success too! As a young man I wanted to become a school teacher but a very good friend that was teaching talked me out of it, he was working two jobs to make ends meet and I respected him. However I did wind up teaching and of all things can you believe photography too!

Well I guess that would cover my 600mm F4. I have a $50,000 rider and it costs me $248 annually. Its worth the peace of mind.

I pay $91 per year for $10,000 worth of insurance. And this covers anything for full replacement.

I'm assuming my camera equipment is covered by my homeowner's policy. I'm going to call the company soon to verify my coverage. But, I have more than a normal person's equipment. I have two full frame bodies and several very expensive lenses (3 of them approach $2000). I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist. I'm curious ...

Does anyone have special riders or policies for their hobby equipment? I'm not interested in coverage for commercial or pro photography, only hobby.

While w don't get to Yellowstone as often as you, we do try to get there somewhat regularly. Last year we saw one female moose in Teton and none anywhere else. I have never been lucky enough to see a wolf, and that is not for lack of trying. We were at a wolf preserve this summer and were told that the majority of usable wolf pictures come from preserves, they are just too tough to find in the wild. I know some with regular access to the park will disagree, but for those of us that have to travel some distance, we may never see them in their natural habitat.
