This is a very common and quite pesty Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. I found this one yesterday afternoon and brought it in for a focus stacking session. I've done many with them in the past and I find them to be quite interesting in their own way.

The proboscis is quite long so it would not fit in the full frame of view at this magnification. I've bitten into apples that appear to have a bruise many times and I now wonder how many of them were actually the result of a stink bug probing them to dissolve it and suck it up for their meal before I had mine.

Each time I look at one staged like this I see a second face that appears to be smiling at me. Look at the two primitive eyes (Ocelli) on the top of its head and the two ridges coming down to where they join the proboscis and the shape of head makes it look like a second face that is smiling. Well, at least it make me smile

This is one of my preserved Japanese Beetles that I staged for a focus stack session. We have an abundance of them here and they are constant eating machines.

This session is an experiment using a Nikon TM Toolmaker 5X Measuring Microscope Objective as the lens of the camera. I also used a sample paint swatch from Lowes paint department as the background color. I have an assortment of different colors to compliment different colored specimens.

The threaded adapter has yet to arrive so I wrapped some tape around the end to make a friction fit into an oversize adapter. Not exact science yet workable for now.

I found this unknow little flying beetle laying in the bottom of the dog's outdoor water bowl when I freshened it this morning. I picked it out with tweezers and brought it in and staged it for a focus stacking session. Because it was in the water for quite some time it was very supple so I was able to move its legs and antenna where most other specimens are far too stiff to get into a good position.

It is yet another specimen that found its way to me. I also rescued a female jumping spider that walked in the door while it was open and hopefully she will find a convenient home on our porch where I will be able to see her from time to time.

This is another beetle that is a member of the Tenebrionidae family of beetles that is part of the Bill (newtoyou) collection of specimens so a big thanks goes out to him.

This is a focus stacked image consisting of 150 images taken at 35-micrometer step distances for each shot. Camera used is a Fujifilm X-T20 little mirrorless mounted on a motorized digital focus rail and attached to a bellows with a reverse mounted 50mm lens opened to between f/4 and f/5.6. Illumination is constant LED lamps diffused with packing foam.
