Added note.
If you are unable to familiarize yourself with the camera before you have to use it again, try the iA mode. I challenge you to get a bad picture in that mode. Not an exhibit photo necessarily, but at the minimum a great family album result.

I truly cannot imagine what your complaint could be.
I regularly travel with my zs40, leaving all my Nikon gear at home, along with the FZ1000. I am absolutely awed by the build, features and image quality.
Not to be snide, but with the zs series you do have to familiarize yourself with the camera before leaving home.
I wish you well!

max aperture on the 105 macro is f2.8.
ZI is shorthand for "Zone of the Interior". Continental US. Sorry about that.
Term hasn't been used for some 70 years. Some things we can't forget.

Right! I'm 88 and a totally disabled veteran. I recentlly gave up on my D750 with its bushel of lenses and accessories for a bridge camera with a 28-400mm lens and wonderfl features, the Lumix fz1000.

The all-manual Youngnuo YN650-IV flash units cost $69 with built in radio triggers/receivers/transmiters to control other 560's remotely.

I'm back to shooting.

I wish you well in whatever choices you make.

I did hold on to the D7100 simply because I couldn't bring myself to part with it - so far.

Heat is your next BIG concern. compare it to setting your camera on a sunny beach for the day. Ziplock bag in the cooler works but requires strict discipline: Always exhaust ALL air frim the bag before stowing it. Slowly bring the bag up btntclose to ambient temp before opening it.
Search for suggestions for protecting your camera when bringing into the house from freezing weather.
have a wondrous trip!

OP here. The Lumix FX1000 will not allow you to access EC with AUTO ISO active in manual mode. The Lumix has a wonderful method for accessing EC in every shooting mode EXCEPT manual+AUTO ISO. In all other modes (including manual with FIXED ISO) you can press the command dial to cycle through A, S, and M modes. In manual AUTO ISO it skips the EC option. On the Lumix FX1000, you cannot access EC. What they saying is, the purpose of AUTO ISO is to assure you of a proper exposure - the camera's choice of an acceptable exposure and ONLY the camera's decision. It is intended primarily for sling shooting and precisely for sling shooting and its occasions. Since I tend to override the camera's choice very often, I've gone back to manual plus FIXED ISO. Lumix makes it so easy and quick to chose which of the three parameters you want to control to effect your "EC"!

The reason I'm in AUTO ISO is because i am insisting that I want to control both the f-stop and the shutter speed independently. That's why I'm in manual mode in the first place. So changing either one is not a solution. With fixed ISO that's the only parameter of the exposure triangle that is left to vary the exposure. But AUTO ISO will not let you change it. The camera is going to insist on enforcing ITS selected ISO that will yield a zero EC while protecting YOUR preferred F/S combination. that's the purpose of AUTO ISO.

So it appears that in AUTO ISO I have no way to apply EC. That was my question.

How can you vary the exposure compensation in auto ISO mode?
On the Lumix FZ1000 in auto ISO the camera always sets the EC to zero as I vary the F, S setings. ???

I will crop tight unless I have a reason to crop a little loose. I would estimate 90% tight, 10% loose. Yes, one can lose some room for correction by going tight. But I feel one should shoot more than a one shot composition (if possible) and from as many points of view as time and subject allows. This, for me, usually returns at least one tight composition that leaves as little need for editing as possible.

How many pixels do you need for your intended print or display size?
With 16-24mp being common these days, I have no compunction about leaving room for PP cropping. Cheap insurance.
No, - not lazy - prudent.

Somewhere reading about BBF, I was surprised that it said, "Remember that you still must press the shutter release to turn on the VR."
Is that true? Is VR (set to ON) inactive until the moment of shutter release?
Makes sense for battery consumption but I never ran into that before.

If so, do you have to pause momentarily for VR to respond or is it fast enough to do its job if you simply mash the button in a single, continuous motion? (Hard to believe. I gotta stop reading those unvetted sources.)

Budget allowing, look at the D7200.

Do a Google search first on "Nikon D7200 vs D7100"
I decided that the only difference TO ME was the increased buffer size.
I found a NEW D7100 for less than $600.
