You are welcome. We all started out as newcomers and all needed help along the way. Glad I could be of some help.

What everyone above has said: Practice, practice, practice! Take lots of pictures. Critique your photos. Is the exposure perfect? Is the image razor sharp? Do you have a clear and well defined subject?

There are many "Rules" of photography - the rule of thirds, the Sunny 16 rule, etc. These are in reality guidelines which may be broken with sufficient artistic intent. However, there are three rules which may never be broken. They are:

1. A good photograph has a clear subject.

2. Use effective composition to draw attention to the subject.

3. Simplify - eliminate distractions which draw attention from the subject

Oh yes - and practice, practice, practice! No one is born with all the knowledge to be a great photographer. You have to continually try and learn from your mistakes.

Another great free resource is the Digital Photography School. Sign up for their weekly newsletter which has all sorts of useful information, great tutorials and weekly challenges.

And remember - photo editing is no substitute for good photographic technique!

What can you use BESIDES film for taking photographs? Just kidding, I do have a Canon 20D and have a Canon 5D Mk III on my short list for Christmas. But for serious art photography I turn to film. Digital is great, no doubt about it. But if you want to hang a gallery sized print to be proud of, the tonal graduation, color saturation and sharpness of film can't be beat.

Birchwood Casey makes a product called Aluminum Black. Found in Most sporting goods stores that carry shooting supplies.

I use it to touch up wear marks & scratches on the vintage 35mm lenses I collect. Works ok but sometimes takes a couple of applications to get a good finish. I use a Q-tip to apply, put a heavy coat on, leave it on for a while & rub it around with the Q-tip seems to work best for me.

It contains a couple of mild acids, basically a cold anodizing process.

I notice that some tube sets have 1/2 again the length as mine - why is that - what advantage is it.

Harvey

The longer the tubes, the greater the extension and the higher magnification of the image you are trying to capture. The down side is that light intensity reaching your sensor or film and depth of field decrease as well.
