Both have pros and cons. I chose the D600 because it has a flip up flash, very useful at times and missing from the 6D. Also got a great deal on the kit with 24-85 VR lens for under 2k. So far, I'm delighted with the results. It took some study to learn how to use the camera and I'm still learning, but the images are great when I do my part. I doubt you can go wrong with either the D600 or 6D, get what you like! Bear in mind there are some strong opinions about this on UHH ;-)

I took my D90 on the Oasis of the Seas as I wanted some high ISO capability not available on my then point and shoot. Got a few semi decent shots - all hand held. Mostly used a 28-105 no VR. I was learning the camera (2 years ago) should have used a tripod, none were all that sharp due to movement. Pretty noisy when enlarged too.

ISO 1600 1/13 sec at f/4.5

ISO 1600 1/13 sec at f/3.5

ISO 3200 1/40 sec at f/5.6

ISO 3200 1/10 sec at f/4.5 Not Sharp! Camera Movement.

Check out the Sony RX 100. It's small, metal body, 20mp, shoots raw, very good images. About $650.

I use the 24-85 VR on my D600, not fast but the price is nice (about 30% of the 14-24 and 35% of the 24-70) and the high ISO performance of the D800 would help in low light situations. I routinely get excellent results on the D600 at ISO 800 with this lens.

This was with 24-85 at 28mm ISO 400, 1/100 at F8

I've been using a Sony RX 100 and really like it. It is pocketable, has full manual control, shoots RAW and JPEG, Zeiss lens, in camera HDR, larger sensor than most, 20mp, and the results are of excellent quality. Only disadvantages are high cost and only 4x zoom. This camera is too small for some, but then, that was the best feature for me - I wanted extreme portability!

The aperture of the 18-300 is likely the same F4.5-5.6 over the 70-300 range and will only be 3.5 down low. Thus light will not be different between these two lenses in the range 70-300mm.

Since you already have an 18-55, you might consider the Nikon 70-300 F4.5-5.6 VR it's sharp, also works on FX format and is under $600 at Adorama. I have one and like it a lot, used on both DX and FX body cameras.

Very nice shot with impressive depth of field - both the screen and flag are detailed.

wow someone slapped that one around with an ugly stick a few times LOL. Fantastic photos, what gear are you using? You seem to be a pretty seasoned photographer from these photos you have shared. Keep them coming awesome work!

Truly an outstanding collection of photos here, many very talented folks. I'm new to the forum and can see I'll learn a lot.

In my youth I used to supplement my cash by shooting pictures of motor rallye cars, working all night to develop and print, then sell them to the contestants at the prize giving next day. Was out of the hobby for many years until my sister gave me a Nikon D90 a couple of years ago. Since then, I've been trying to learn how to shoot digital cameras. My equipment is the D90, now supplemented by a D600 and Sony RX100. I also have an old Canon A1 with several FD lenses. It's in great condition so I've bought film for it and will see how that goes!

The house shot was made with the Sony, which is the first point and shoot camera I've had that rivals DSLR quality. In addition, it is very easy to use - I've got some incredible low light shots using the in camera HDR in full auto mode.

Ugly duck was with the D600 using a Nikon 70-300 VR zoom at 300mm hand held - had to crop it quite a bit too. The sunset lake shot was also the D600 with Nikon 28-85 VR zoom. The D600 is harder to master than the others, especially the autofocus system. When I get it right, the results look really good.

Looking forward to participating in the forum!

This one is interesting, the water was very still, so I flipped the image vertically and the reflection is on top. If you look closely, you can see spots from stuff floating on the surface!

I recently got the Sony RX100. It is pricy but blows away any pocket camera I've used before. On a visit to the battleship Alabama museum, I was able to get remarkable shots in almost no light. The in camera HDR and image stabilization are wonderful. You won't feel guilty leaving the DSLR behind!
