On Long Island NY. I don't know if they are later or not than usual - I didn't start looking until this year, but I didn't see many earlier in the year so I am just wondering if it is a natural part of seasonal progression that beetles appear later.

It has been very hot here too though, maybe not dry but with several long heat spells.

Where are you living? They seemed to come late this year in California too. Probably because it has been too dry and too hot. I finally saw a Green Scarab Beetle and a June Bug Beetle in Mid-August.

How about Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best?

Thanks for looking!

From the last few days. Seems there are more beetles around than earlier in the year, does that make sense?

Lampides boeticus seems pretty close but maybe not quite ... slightly different hindwing?

I'm trying to decide which fate is worse...being eaten alive by the ladybug, or a long, slow death while being consumed by the wasp larva.

But it seems pretty likely the ladybug will eat it anyway making the wasp's effort for naught!

Such drama.

Napabob, I think you got the injection shot. In image #5, the one you titled "sniffing distance", you can see the wasps abdomen in between the wasp and the aphid depositing the egg from the rear and beneath the aphid.

Amazing series!

How long did the battle take before the venom did its job on the fly?

thanks for the comment sippyjug.

I don't have experience photographing these before although I have watched them without my camera. I don't see them very often so you are right about that. But he or she was easy to pose, possibly because he was in hunting mode. Every time something would fly by he would pivot to keep it in front so he could pounce if it came near!

Absolutely love the Jumpers and yours is a great one. They are really difficult to find in the wild and you did a good job of not only finding one but getting it to pose for you. Thanks for sharing.
