Thanks for all of the comments. Finally back at my computer. Went back and looked at the other pics I took of this scene. This one is a RAW pic at a different time. I took out the white streaks in the back . Most of them were not really lights but reflections of the sunset off the water in most cases. The outline is gone in this one and can not really figure out why. Hope everyone has a great 2014.

I also do not see any need for changes, other than the lights, which I frankly did not even notice at first because I went straight to the bird. I wouldn't even change the crop since I think it's perfect, and I love the orange light whether it's added or not. The one thing I do see, and I see it often, and I don't know enough yet to know precisely what causes it but it does bother me some, is the fringing around the bird. The bird is absolutely wire sharp (yay!) but surrounding the entire body is a thin light orange line. It's not a killer, and it may just be a fact of digital life, but it's just mildly bothersome. I suspect it happens in post, maybe from sharpening.

I will be away from my computer for the holidays and will try some of the things you mentioned. I to noticed the fringe and was wondering how to remove it. Any help anybody could give on this would be appreciated.

Well using the word filter may be splitting hairs.
So this is not post processed at all?
No contrast, saturation, shadow, tone, clarity, vibrance, curves, dodging, burning, no nothing?

Sorry I did use contrast, vibrancy and shadow reduction.

I don't see any pressing need to change anything Jody.
But seeing as you want suggestions, maybe crop a fraction off the left side to bring the bird a little closer to the edge.
Make the lights disappear.
Unprocess the orange a fraction to take it back to, or find, a more natural hue.
Is that a Cokin filter or a software one?

I did not use a filter. That was the color at sunset. Thank you for the comments

I agree with this 100%.
I would not use my body to make up for the lens, but unfortunately we have financial limits as well. We do what we have to do.
But no F4 lens was designed to be used primarily for low light shooting. That's why on the 8th day, primes were invented, for speed.
For low light, faster is always better!! If you have an F4, you should also have a fast prime to go with it. After all, 2.8 is no fire breathing dragon either. Also look into a 50 1.4 or an 85 1.8 etc.
Good luck

I have ordered the 5d and I am looking at getting a 24-70 lens. I am trying to decide between the Canon 24-70 f4L IS USM and the Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 VC USD. Will the 5D the low light capabilities make up for the loss of several steps going with the canon? Both are about the same price. I have not used either of these lens or the 5d yet. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My 5DM3 is suppose to be delivered today. I "have" to be out of town and will not be back for several days. What a bummer.

I was/am several yrs with a 7d and now added a 5dm3 to the mix. Shooting high school football from the sideline. I would start with the 5dm3 using a 300mf4 and on the 7d a 70-200 2.8. As the light faded and the field lights took over, I would put the 70-200 on the 5dm3 and put the 7d away. I am very pleased with both as they each have a pro for depending on what I am doing. I think it key to have lenses to compliment each camera.
Thank you for your reply. I have the same lens and that is how I planned on using them.

I have just ordered a Canon 5d Mark iii. I got it mainly to use for landscapes and low light shooting. I was wondering if anyone has used it for sports and what results they had. I have a Canon 7D and will be keeping it.

Not bad at all but personally, I think that the signs are too underexposed. The sky is bring and my eye immediately goes there instead of the signs.

Also, since the sky/boats are more in focus than the signs, then it's slightly tough to see what the main subject is. I think it would have been slightly better to allow the boats/sky/water background to go "slightly" out of focus and have the signs be tack sharp than the other way around.

Just my opinion.

Can not change focus but I did lighten the signs some.

I am new at taking sunrise photographs. Can anyone tell me the best time to be at the location to take pictures/ Thanks for your help.

You have gotten some good answers. I use a App called Magic Hour that will let you know when the magic hour starts for both sunrise and sunset.

Has anyone purchased a refurbished camera from canon? What were the results?
