I received a new solar filter today. It is a Firecrest, 5.4 ND (18 stops), advertised as having no color cast. I mounted this on a Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 lens with a 1.4x extender.
Then mounted lens to a 5dm4, mounted on a gimbal on a tripod.

This was my first attempt, I was trying to see how difficult it was to get the subject in the frame. Then I wanted to get a rough idea of the exposure parameters, varying the shutter speed.

I'm enclosing a photo shot at 1/50 sec, f/8, iso 100, focal length 540mm. The sun is almost completely white, no orange, yellow, or other color cast to it.
I've seen many photos with an orange-ish cast during partial occlusion. Like on Fred Espanak's site.

Am I doing something wrong? Or did I get a filter that doesn't produce any color cast?

The second download link is for a .dng file.

Thanks,
Wes

I will also be backing them up on my laptop and an external drive daily, just wanted an additional alternative. We can never be too cautious.

Perhaps a USB thumb drive, then. Make sure the camera sets the dates on the files correctly, then just backup the most recent to the thumb drive.

Stacking is generally not advisable, but there's no other way to get ND and CPL in one filter - yet. In the situation you describe, it seems like you have no choice. Remember that with so much in front of the lens, vignetting could be an issue at wide angles.

B&H has these: Formatt Hitech 100mm Firecrest Filter Holder Kit
The cpl comes integrated into the holder, and you put the ND filters in the brackets in front of that.
You can of course remove the CPL.

I have been a reader of UHH for several years and would like opinions on the camera gear for a trip to Italy that includes Rome, Florence, Tuscany and Venice. I hope to get some memorable photos and am planning to take my Canon 7D 2, 15-85 mm lens, Sigma 10-20 mm lens and Lumix FZ1000 camera, a travel tripod and polarizer filters, chargers, etc. I am looking to buy a travel tripod but not sure what to get. The two tripods I have are too heavy. I decided not to bring my 70-200 f4 lens as it is too big and heavy. I was not going to bring my 50 mm f1.4 but someone told me I should bring the 50 mm lens for sure.
My partner and I are going to Italy in September for 20 days. The tripods I am considering are the fotopro c4i, Vanguard 235 AB, and Optex black Carbon Fiber. I was also considering taking advantage of Canon's lens sale and buying a L series lens that would be a good lens for my 7D 2 (17-40, 24-70, 24-105 or a prime L lens) that I could also use if and when I get a full frame camera. Last day of the sale is today so probably will have to forgo that.
I would appreciate comments and suggestions on the equipment I am planning to take and what travel tripod I should get.
Tim

I have travelled to Italy with just my 6D and 24-105 lens. Since you have a crop sensor, the 24 -105 might still make sense for most shots. I would also take a fast prime for interior shots. I have a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for my full-frame bodies that I just love. They also make a 35mm f/1.4 (I believe); or you could pick up the Canon f/1.8 really inexpensively. Great for interior shots where allowed!

Better image quality in the mark 4:
1. Higher MP count
2. about 2 stops more dynamic range. ( https://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-IV-Sensor-Review-Game-changer )
That would probably do it for me, I've got some really nice lenses, and I seem to compose things that need high dynamic range, typically recovering a lot of shadow detail.
But I'm just starting to get comfortable with my mark 3, and I just retired, so other things in the budget take priority.

Every summer, a few of these come back to our neighborhood, South Bay near San Francisco. I haven't been able to get a shot of one in flight, but it looks to me like the wings are barred with white when extended.

They have the most amazing repertoire of calls. They never seem to repeat a phrase more than a few times, then it's on to something totally new and different. Wonderful to listen to! I'm wondering if they are some kind of mockingbird?

thanks

Well, it took me several iterations, several trips. A lot of time spent solving problems.
I use the "500 rule", maximum exposure time is less than or equal to 500/focal length.
Aperture always wide open, seems like you need f/2.8 or wider, because the only other thing you can adjust is ISO, which introduces more noise((

Unlike a lot of things I do, Milky Way requires a lot of post processing, so I had to learn how to do that.
I may get more adventurous, try focus stacking with the foreground, since I'm essentially doing that anyway in post.

A long journey, but pleasant, lots to learn. And the subject isn't going away any time soon))

Thanks for your reply!

I just caught the end of the clear weather here in NorCal on the night of the new moon. This is taken in an area called Panoche Hills, which shows up on Dark Sky finder, about 2 hours from San Jose.

The thing I like about it most is that the stars are pretty well in focus. I was successful (I think) at using Live View at 10x to focus on Venus.
The lens was a Sigma 20mm f/1.4, wide open, shutter speed 25 seconds, eight exposures stitched together in Lightroom. ISO 4000. LR did a pretty nice job on noise reduction, I think.
I removed an airplane trail in Photoshop.

Anyway, my dog sure likes going on night adventures :D

Since the marginal cost of an additional subscriber is essentially nil (a little electricity for the occasional download), they could raise the price by a dollar a month, and make $1.00 times their number of subscribers in additional monthly revenue. Adobe already reported record profits for this quarter. There's a press release on PRNewsWire.

PaintShop Pro (PSP) is a raster and vector graphics editor for Microsoft Windows.

Photoshop is acknowledged to outperform Paintshop - Aftershot Pro is acknowledged to outperform LightRoom

Photoshop has lots of plugin to simplify your work - Almost all of them work in Paint Shop Pro

Photoshop is in version 16 (CC) since 1988 - Paint Shop Pro is in version 19 since 1990

Photoshop is $120/year - never will you see it "On Special" - Paintshop Pro is $79 for 18-24 months - Currently on sale for $47 (near end of software cycle)

I like PSP because I have had it since version 0.1 (pre-release), and hence my learning curve has matched their growth curve
Most Photoshop people like it because that is what they learned on and there is no learning curve visible from the plateau

I drive a Jeep, am sitting at a Windows Computer and have a windows phone - most Photoshop people drive a Volvo, type on a Mac and have an I Phone.

Now, you have asked this question several times in different formats for two years; In that amount of time, you could have downloaded every imaginable Photography Post Processing software trial and discovered, for yourself, which software fits your style and pocketbook, and you could be informing this group as an unbiased observer which of these many packages offer the most for you and why and why you purchased (or will purchase) the software of your choice.

Time to step up, young man and do your homework.

Hey, I drive a Jeep, and use PS and LR. And I've worked on every conceivable desktop system under the Sun (pun intended).
Now, to add something useful to the conversation, besides all the books, lynda.com has a series of well-done classes for Adobe software.
I like PS because once I finally figured out selections and masking, I was able to do cool things with blending images, targeted local adjustments. I love the blending modes, the control over opacity, that PS provides. Probably On1 and Affinity can do those as well, but I have enough trouble remembering one system.

Thanks for all the replies. I am leaning toward the Oly E-M10 mrII, it seems really solid (I haven't shot one). I believe it's possible to later get a second lens, a telephoto zoom with a real nice reach.

But, it's complicated.... This is a friend I made as a work colleague, and she lives in Kiev, Ukraine. The situation is pretty crazy there, the economy is fragile, and they have pretty high tariffs on imported goods. Plus, the camera and electronics stores there have a reputation for being flaky to downright crooked, so it's not that easy for her to go and try something out. So online ordering is probably the answer, we're trying to figure out customs duties at the moment.

I like the M4/3 ideas, smaller, lighter, less conspicuous (yes, I think that's important, if for no other reason than petty theft on the street is rampant). I might go rent one myself, just to see how it does. But I really can't afford to buy more gear ...... (sigh)

Anyway, thanks. I am humbled to say she got interested after looking at some of my photos (I only showed her the half-dozen or so that were really good :D ))
