I do not have personal experience with the M43. I have had the experience of winning an online contest with an image from a Canon G12. Then when I wanted to print it for display, the image broke down beyond 8x10. I have also shot a Canon G7X with a one inch. Same story, second verse. Higher pixel count, but smaller pixels means fewer photons and less information per pixel--and it shows in prints--especially over 11x14.

I might go the other way, the Fuji GFX 50. Reasonable price of about $5500 plus lenses.

Well, that's my concern, stated in a nutshell. You see, I want to have a good camera with me at all times. That's sometimes difficult with APS-C and FF cameras. I can use my phone, but my phone doesn't produce the IQ I want. And I don't expect phone photos to blow up well, not that I've tried.

However, if Perfect Resize works as advertised, (thank you, MinnieV), there's no reason not to go with a M43 or even a higher-end, 1"-sensor, pocket-sized point-and-shoot for that walk around camera - the one to keep with you at all times. The Sony RX100V seems to produce some amazing images for its size. It's not that I would be going out to shoot a gallery shot with this camera, I just want it there in case a gallery shot comes looking for me.

Thank you for your reply WDRoss,

I hand held some long shots on a Mark II demo body and was very impressed. It's actually why I was asking about printing and IQ, as I had never considered OLY or M43 as a serious travel kit prior to that. However, it WAS the OLY 5060WZ that I used underwater for years...

What are your three chosen travel lenses?

Thanks,
Steve

Wow, that's some outfit you configured there. It covers most of what I do with FF and Crop. I might give up my crop kit, but my FF reigns in the studio and on location. I don't want to replicate my entire outfit, but I do want a good, portable camera for travel and daily life.

This is making me think that there's a market out there for a very specialized M4/3 or crop-sensor, mirrorless camera with a mid-range lens having the 24-70mm equivalent at f/2.8 (or faster). I think Nikon had something like that planned in their now-abandoned DF line, but I wasn't going to buy a 1" sensor after fooling around with one of their Nikon 1's.

Thanks again BP, you are very helpful.

These are all excellent in their class. Yes, f/1.7 on an M4/3 lens of equivalent field of view has the bokeh of f/3.5 on full frame.

No OIS below 30mm. Panasonic Dual IS II requires compatible Panasonic lenses with a firmware upgrade. The G85 IBIS works with non-OIS lenses. Olympus lens stabilization is incompatible with Panasonic IBIS and Panasonic lens OIS is incompatible with Olympus IBIS.

This has turned into a very informative string.

So if I was looking for a lightweight street/travel kit covering wide to short tele, like a 35mm equivalent of ~15mm to ~85mm, that I could use in low light, night street photography, using the good in-body and good in-lens IS. What would you recommend?

The idea for this would be to go as light as possible, and I LOVE fast primes, so one each of a wide, normal and 'portrait length' prime is not out of the question. Zooms are nice, but primes are primes, if you know what I mean.

And from what you're saying, don't expect as much boceh from a 1.4 M43 lens as a 1.4 FF or APS-C?

So it means nothing.

No, it means everything. To me.

I create images for my own reasons. I adapt them using every technology that I choose to use, for my own reasons. Today I am a better technical photographer (I hope) that the one I was when I used a Brownie and flash bulbs. Or the better photographer that I was when I got my very own first Fuji 35mm camera. and developed my own film.

I was a photographer, and I still am. But that is not all that I am now. I am a writer because I write. An artist because I art. I am a social media-ologist because you are looking at this. I am a more or less sophisticated software user. I deploy all these skills in the digital world and as such I have devolved. I am not that analog photographer anymore.

Remember, this is MY journey. I have defined myself through my OWN artistic process and as such, only I have the right to name myself.

I name myself TOG. Hail TOG, manipulator of light!!!!

When I started with photography, I took photos on a manual camera, with film. I set my F/stop and shutter speed myself. (I never pushed the ISO, like some of the more experienced photographers did.) I developed the negatives and printed from those negatives. I also shot some slides.

Now I can do more with less hardware, but more software. I'm still a photographer, but in some ways I've de-evolved to 'Tog.'

Anyone you may know? Funny that YOU would write this since you are one of the worst offenders on this forum. Not to mention the time you spend here. Look at your post count. Over 12000!!

Actually, I've never seen Tommy Dekany in a post string that he didn't try to turn into a huge argument. Some people are just here to be Internet Trollz. Tommy? Tommy?

Thanks for the Perfect Resize tip. Good to know if that's the way I go.

I use m43 but have not tried printing that large. Most of my prints are up to 18x24 and are fine. The few that I've done larger, I use Perfect Resize to up-res the files.

I do have an m43 friend who does large-print exhibits, and has printed that large from 16 mp Olys, they are fine from normal viewing distance though differences would probably show up on very close exam. I would expect problems would be manageable except for images suffering from detail loss due to high ISO or aggressive processing. There's no denying that m43 sensors are somewhat more noise-prone than larger sensors.

Hello,

I'm looking into smaller gear for pro-grade work. Strangely, and against my advice, my photos are showing up occasionally in galleries and one-man shows. I like to travel light, but even when I travel, there's always a chance that 'the shot' turns up. I'd hate to waste that shot on a camera that isn't up to the job for printing a large, gallery-sized print.

Does anyone on UHH have experience printing M43 to roughly 4'x5'? How did that work out?

Thanks in advance.

I was at the Nikon counter at the Photo+ show in NYC. I saw a guy behind the counter hand a P900 to an interested consumer and - with a little smirk on face - say, 'Now this is our 'Stalker Camera..."

Had to laugh. Hope his boss didn't hear.

No, but I have my eye on one. I currently use a x100s that I love. It's my lifestyle camera. (For my lifestyle, not lifestyle photography.)

There's an old gunfighting rule; "Have a gun with with you." This applies to photography, as well. The x100 series makes it possible to always have a world class camera with you, even when you are naked.

FUJI is coming on strong in the mirrorless world and this camera is one reason why. The XT2 is another.
