I think you missed the mark when you said there was a place for several cars to park. There is barely room to pull off the road and you better be careful or you will be run over getting out of your vehicle or roll down the steep side of the cliff. It is a beautiful waterfall but very easy to miss when driving by. The road is very narrow and curvy so you have to be very careful.

Hmmm, there was room for three cars, four if each one pulls forward, and there was a couple of feet of clearance on either side of the car. I've been on worse. But you're right, it is dangerous. Fortunately, the traffic was minimal.

How did you get that low perspective without frightening the hawk away?!

What amazing detail! If it had been me with the camera, the picture would have been a blur from my hands trembling with glee.

While sitting out on my porch one evening I noticed this delicate bloom had popped up amongst my hostas. Thinking how beautiful the undulating petals were, I ran inside to get the camera. By the time I returned for the shot, lo and behold, there were dinner guests--well, one was the diner and one was the dinner! Later, when I had time to look up this bloom, I discovered it was Jimsom Weed, a highly toxic plant that, when used sparingly, is medicinal but lethal in higher doses. Since it was brushing up against where my dog lies, I immediately eradicated it. Glad to have the photo and not the plant!

What a wonderful portrait--it should be in a birding book.

Thank you! With summer heating up, this is a beautiful region to escape to.

Thanks for including the camera settings and your PP information. Am headed to Charlotte next week. Where in Macon County is this place?

This waterfall is located about 8.5 miles west of Highlands and 7.7 miles east of Franklin. If your time is limited, you could take I-40 and get off at the Waynesville exit and follow Hwy 441 to Franklin. If you have time for an overnight, stay around Highlands and continue photographing waterfalls all the way to Brevard. The road between Franklin and Highlands and on to Lake Toxaway is winding and slow going but worth a day trip if you can squeeze it in.

Very nice job!

I've not seen this waterfall yet... How is the access to it?

Well, let's just say I didn't see it going from Highlands to Franklin! But, coming FROM Franklin to Highlands on Hwy 64, it's about 7.7 miles from the 64/441 junction. The falls will be on your right in a curve and there is a pull-out for several cars. But be sure to pull well off the road as the big trucks need every inch of road with the deep curves. And thanks for the thumbs up!

Right. This is a genuine problem. You cannot pull over onto a shoulder that isn't there. I remember the view even though I couldn't take a picture.

Speaking of shoulders that aren't there--this is one image I'm glad I could get to my camera for. Don't think I'll ever see this again and it would be hard to describe with words. So bottom line is still: "A picture is worth a thousand words"!

This is a very popular waterfall in western NC which I stopped to photograph in the morning. There was just enough cloud filter to take the hard glare off the water but still add highlights to the edges of the trees. The original had a slightly blue cast which I adjusted in Lightroom3. I used paintbrush to nudge the highlights on the trees a bit more. It's hard to present anything original on this often published waterfall, but I was grateful for the chance to arrive during the right light.

There's truth to the subject line to this post. So many times, while driving along on a trip, the choice view is from a blind curve with no shoulder anywhere near. But those images remain etched in my mind despite thousands of photographs that I forget I even took.
