Super Duper & Carbon Copy Cloner are not free programs but receive good reviews. Both are very flexible and can be configured to either clone a drive or do incremental backups.

Chronosync is yet another great MAC backup system. Buy it once and all updates are free forever....or so they claim :)

On my system I make use of Time Machine to backup incrementally my hard disk and selected folders from an external thunderbolt drive, which includes my pictures, LR catalog & LR folder

This makes hourly backups, daily backups, weekly backup and monthly backups to my Time Machine external drive. Everything in incremental so after the first backup everything happens fast.

I also do a monthly (or sooner if the spirit moves me) Chronosync backup of my LR folder, catalog, pictures and important data to an external USB drive.

This backup is a mirror backup so there is no incremental history, just an exact snapshot in time of my folders at the time of backup.

The ONLY sure way to test your backup - run your backup, delete a backed up file from your disk and see if you can recover it.

I am new to the dslr and Elements 11 and wonder if shooting in raw and saving as psd is a good idea. If not, should if shoot JPEG/raw. At this point space is not an issue and I just want the ability to create the best result I can.

In my opinion, always shoot RAW (NEF on a Nikon) and either save as NEF or as DNG to retain the ability to go back to the original as shot image that will be re-editable from scratch.

Shooting RAW and post processing also gets you the best detail as you have every pixel the camera shot in the file, once converted to JPG you may have lost 40-60% of the details.

DNG is a raw format that you can easily convert the NEFS to with Adobe's free dng converter tool. It will reduce the file size slightly as well and allow camera raw tools edits to be saved directly to the DNG file instead of to a sidecar file, but provide you the ability to always go back to the as shot image of the original file because nothing is really changed, it only contains the edits to be applied to the original image.

For what it is worth, I shoot raw with my D7100 and convert to DNG when imported into Lightroom for edits/processing, then reformat the SD card when it goes back into the camera.

Yes I did, but I know my shutter speed was way too low to really get a sharp image...

The info was....

500 mm
f/8.0
ISO 100
1/20

Had the chance last night to grab a shot of the Supermoon on the rise using my Sigma 170-500.

I am pretty well pleased with the outcome, but welcome any comments.

Thanks.
