Just a quick update. We've tried everyone's suggestions to no avail. Well, except the last two because we were at the Microsoft store where they used their software to remove LR and clear the registry but could not attempt to re-install LR because he did not take the disc. Once home, he re-installed LR but got the same error message - that it could not open because it was already open. He called Microsoft and has been on the phone with a woman in India and now a man for hours where they're trying a myriad of things, including installing the most recent version of Windows 10 (which we were pretty sure already WAS the most current). Anyway, he's still on the phone. I will post again if (hopefully WHEN) this issue is resolved. Thanks for everyone's help. The guy at the Microsoft store found the same things several of you directed us to - CClean and the Lock file but never did find anything. To say this is frustrating is an understatement.

I know this my sound a little strange do you have Malware program such as Malwarebytes it's free I'm wondering if you have something else going on as you said you have had issues with you Dell computer.

Yes, he does have that I think he ran it. Thanks.

I'm sorry. You have to download the free version from the website. It is not a Windows utility app. The link is below.

It certainly could be a HD issue especially if you are experiencing issues beyond LR. You may want to try CCleaner first as it's also possible that whoever tried to fix the original issue may have restored your system thinking it was hardware and copied an existing software issue to the new drive.

Ooooohhhh. Thanks for the link.

I agree definitely look for the lock file and delete it. I have had similar issues when I have done funky things without thinking and finding and deleting the lock file has always resolved the already running issue for me.

He tried that and did not find this file. Thanks!

Close Lightroom (or cease any attempts to open it), and search you computer for a file "Lightroom Catalog.lrcat.Lock"

If you find such a file (on my computer it is located in my Lightroom folder where the catalog and Smart Previews are located), delete the file, reboot the computer and try to open Lightroom.

Thanks, Linary. We'll try this before going to the Microsoft store. He's changed focus (after way too much frustration on Easter Sunday!) and is finishing up our taxes.

Thanks, Ralph. Windows 10 does not seem to have CCleaner (which I corroborated with a google search) but I did google Registry cleaner which seems to require a separate piece of software. The description of Registry issues does fit what he's been experiencing - frequent freeze ups and black screens that eventually recover. We think it's time to take it back to the Microsoft store at the mall. They replaced his hard drive some months back and he has a one year warranty for any computer in our house that needs service. Thanks again for your suggestions.

It's kind of strange that the OS let it be uninstalled while it said it was still running. If that is what happened then the registry may have some orphaned entries in it. Run CCleaner and have it check the registry. If it finds bad entries then back up the registry and then have CCleaner delete those entries. Good luck.

Thanks very much, Spider. Great ideas! Unfortunately, we found nothing running under either of those taps related to Adobe or Lightroom.

My partner had an issue with Lightroom and shut it down. When he tried to re-open it told him there was already a copy open. There wasn't. He un-installed LR but when trying to re-install was once again told it was already there. Any ideas about what might be going on. He's running a high end Dell All-in-One.

Thanks!
Donna

The second one is my favorite. I love the way it leads my eye thru the rocky cliffs. I'd recommend the dehaze feature of Lightroom. Must of have been so exciting to be there in person!

I just bought a very lightly used one for travel. I asked the same question 2-3 months ago, response was overwhelmingly positive. I saw someone else posted the question a week or so back, responses were overwhelmingly negative on image.

So far I am satisfied with how it performs on my D750. I will say if I wasn't traveling by plane I have a variety of other lenses in my bag that I prefer.

FYI, there are numerous lightly used ones on ebay in the $550-$650 range. I paid $575 including shipping.

Me too!! I always come here and search for comments about particular things I'm thinking of buying and after purchasing my refurbished D750 I was wondering about what first FX lens I should get and the response here for the 28-300 was overwhelmingly positive. Very interesting. I, for one, am glad I made the plunge. I got mine used on Adorama or B&H. Can't remember which at the moment.

I have read plenty about the 28-300mm zoom lens and most reports indicate an excessive amount of distortion and extreme vignetting; practically speaking, is the lens really worth having. According to some, it is the ideal traveling lens because you don't have to carry anything else: it replaces most of your lenses. Your comments and opinions will be appreciated.

I love mine! Have used for everything from events to birding. Have 70-200 with TC 2.0 now so won't be using it much for birding anymore but absolutely for a walk around camera. Only thing I don't like about it is that I can't work the telephoto mechanism if the hood is still on in the backwards storing position. In other words, I have to take the time to take that off if I'm just grabbing for a hawk on side of road, for example. It does have vignetting at the short end IF the hood is on. So I guess there are two things I don't like. Images are great though.
