Also, if you are emotionally attached to the subject of hour photograph, such as your partner, children, pet, etc., it will be difficult to "see" the photograph objectively and critically. That is not to say we shouldn't take photos of those we love, but know that usually we will think the photographs are "better" than they really are.

Guilty here. I try to justify, as in this last photo, the softness.."it looked like that" thought process. I knew it! But your thoughts are exactly why. These are the things you pros seem to instinctively see / understand. I hope to achieve that. That is why I am a pest here asking for critique. As with everyone, I know knowledge is hard earned Ireally do appreciate the sharing. The talent here blows me away. I may never achieve that bit the battle is a major part of the enjoyment / challenge. Thank you!

A critique by nature is harsh. If you ask---then be prepared. But critiques will help you improve. You do not have to agree---it is YOUR shot after all. But if the critique is someone thought of this for a reason. Photography is filled with rules. Yes they can be broken---but should be broken for a reason--thus you have to know the rules first. Remember---you took the shot---everything in the shot is your responsibility. There are no excuses. That said...

I recently saw your post asking about critiques. I am a photo judge for competitions in south Florida and also teach photography on a college level. If you find this harsh---just dismiss it as the ramblings of an old man. If you want additional comments on other images you have posted send me a p.m. with the titles of your posts you want comments on.

First, a viewer will like or dislike a photo in about 3 seconds. If they are not wowed withing that time the images fails. This image lack a wow factor. First, it is flat. Nothing pops, it is almost monochrome in its presentation. The dog looks soft---maybe focus, maybe processing, maybe high ISO with too much noise reduction--it could be a variety of things all of which are damaging to the overall photo. When photographing animals the EYE must be sharp. The saying is focus on the eye, that that is believable then the viewer's mind will think most of the rest is sharp. The dogs eye is not sharp. Always focus on the eye closest to the camera of the animal is not facing the camera square. The composition has numerous flaws. The subject is centered. There is something called the rule of thirds. The dog should be moved to the right. In this case your horizon line is the hill the dog is resting on. This line is in the middle of the image. Another violation of the rule of thirds. Personally I would have included more area above the dog when i composed the image because there is contrast between the darks of the dog and the lighter color of the background. The color of the hill and the color of the dog are both dark, the dog blends in. Thus I would crop off more of the area below the dogs front paws---you must leave some, at at least 1/2 to 2/3 of the dirt could be eliminated. I took a screen capture and cropped it as an example. I would note that I think there should be a little bit more room added to the left side---but it was not there and I can't manufacture it.

I'll note one positive: Youshot the dog at his eye level. When shooting animals or children you should position you camera at their eye level. This you appear to have done.

Consider these ideas for the next time.
Good Luck

Larry

Thank you so much for taking time to give me this! Gives me so much more to think about when I shoot. Your knowledge and experience is valuable and I appreciate you freely sharing. In the future I hope to get this type of critique again and again. I do Tax law and Estate law and still learn something everyday! I suspect the same will be true for photography.

A big thank you to your wife for adopting a cat and not a kitten, they usually go first!! He's adorable and I know will bring your family laughs and love!! I volunteered at an animal shelter for 8 years with cats and that may have caused me to have seven at one time... now sadly down to three! My son adopted a pitbull and his name was Mogli!!! lol... but they did change it to Trigger.
Beautiful shots of your new member!!

Thank you! She is the cat person, not that I don't like cats, I love animals period. I love my puppies! Age doesn't matter, I still call them puppies! I have raised Rotties for years and a few Dobermans and an occasional Pittie. With age I have started to rescue other than raise. A Pit is next.

Shooter, welcome to the Hog!
I’ll give you my opinion. The average photographer doesn’t have a clue how to give a meaningful critique. There, is that harsh enough?? LoL
I’m a formally trained fotographer so I’ve been given, and have given a lot of critiques.
But I rarely give one. “Nice shot”, is not a critique. When I have given one I make notes so I don’t nice anything. That takes time, and the more you know, the more you see, so the more time it takes.
How many critiques do you have to give where that you gave one is not even acknowledged that one was given? And then there are critiques that are polar opposites! What’s up with that? I hear that it’s a very personal thing. It’s not! Photography has very specific rules. If doesn’t matter if you hate an image, the rules are STILL there. Good critique is based on the rules that are there, the rules that are bent and the rules that are broken, it’s still Photography, whether it’s Mapplethorpe or Adams.
This is of course just my opinion from what I have observed here.
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty here that could give you a very good critique, should they decide to play.
And yes, there are a few places to go here where a critique may be more reliable and helpful as well. I’m sure many will point those out.
Again, welcome, from one Shooter to another! LoL

Have you posted them in the For Your Consideration forum section? Or in the Photo Critique forum section? Or in the Photo Analysis forum section?
If you go to the bottom of the page and click on the All Sections link you will be taken to a listing of all the forum sections available on UHH. There is a brief description of each section and you can subscribe to the forum sections you are interested in.

I usually just put them in photo gallery. Wrong spot? Thanks for the guidance!

If I post photos and ask for critique and tips and get little response does that mean:

#1 They are lacking basic skill and everybody's being polite? (my thought)

#2 They lack any interest?

I do want to improve very much. I Appreciate even the most harsh criticism..stings for sure but only way to improve right?

I’ve never liked using filters in Lightroom. They make for fast adjustments; but always to someone else’s idea what your image should look like. After you play with the sliders enough times, In the development module, and get a feel for what each one does, you can customize your photo to exactly the way you want it to look.

Thanks for the tip!

It was shot with the sun at his back so I lightened up the shadows and darks, toned down the highlights and white and the background was still annoyingly bright so I tried the graduated filter.

My buddy on his perch watching over his 2 Basset sisters as they roam the yard. First attempt at using filters in LR. Usually just adjust exposure and noise. Not thrilled so any tips would be appreciated

Sorry everyone. I didn't mean this to be political. I just wanted to point out why I trust in Nikon glass. That being said, I only own 2 Nikon lenses and 2 Tamron. My champagne taste can't be backed up by my meager funds. Odd though, they are very reasonable priced scopes but high quality. Again, sorry this went political

So you are God’s own appointed one to explain to each and every one of us, just who exactly we hate.

Hate is a big thing with you.

As a matter of fact, Huckleberry, I think you are pretty good at hating your own self.

I am almost tempted to say that you hate the accused haters more than the accused haters hate anyone.

No, I don't have the answers. Never said that. Typical jackass move on your part..impart your feelings, though trying to be held secret on others. The only hate I have is for ignorance, abusers of animals, women and child abusers....and yes, you are in fact correct, haters like you. A real man knows and admits his weaknesses and tries to improve on them. You on the other hand don't have the balls to admit the truth yet you are the one who told me you are here to ensure the truth is separated from the BS. You are the BS. Spew your insults at me all day, keep proving my point. We can come to actual answers when you can admit that your side is no mor e perfect than the other and that there are places where we could actually agree and make improvements. But that isn't really what you want. You want others to bow to your beliefs because only you are correct and you are Gods gift to all the answers...and only your way. So hit me back with more BS, take the typical playbook of accusing me of what you are guilty of. I will sleep like a baby knowing I am a reasonable person...no...I fail there often, but try to be..you on the other hand try to be as divisive as possible.
