It's already got the look down for future years.
It's parent was in the same tree an hour later,
completely ignoring the half dozen ravens
hanging out nearby. We were dramatically
alerted to these eagles and 2 more when they over took us in
the Xterra and kept flying straight down the road ahead of
us. A very close encounter.

Really nice shots. You not only have the action, but the emotion in many of these

You might try just a touch more SS, maybe even only a half to 1 stop. A few of them, the ball is not frozen (players are perfect). Noise looks good, so it might be a worthwhile trade-off

I like the last the best, but your timing is impeccable on all

Thank you! Knowing that I can now push the ISO some more and still have reasonable noise, upping
that is a good idea. Previously I had to keep the noise in check with my D7200 and 85mm f1.8, and what suffered there was depth of field, and I had to crop more for some shots that were farther away also. The full frame and 200mm range at f2.8 has solved some issues. Looks like this will be my indoor sports setup
(as most others already have and know to be great) and the D7200 will be used with the long lens for birds and wildlife.

I also noticed that I can used 9 point focus on the D750 and with the D7200 I have to use single point or
I get too many out of focus shots.

Your the best here. In a couple of weeks I will shoot Volleyball playoffs. I only hope I can be as good as you. I have a tall order.

Thank you, very kind words from you-being an excellent sports shooter yourself. You will do great,
especially in the playoff games, the higher the stakes, the better they play,
and the better the photos!!

With all due respect to the great sports shooters that post here these might be the best shots I have seen posted!
Question, out of curiosity, what was your total shots to keepers ratio for this shoot?

Holy cow, thank you so much! I have followed my daughter in this sport up to the college level
and my photography skills have grown right with her. Upgrading equipment as used
stuff comes available in my budget. I would say I shot about 600 shots on 8 total games.
I passed along 115 to the parents that I believe to be true keepers. I'd say 550 were
correctly in focus etc, but missing the ball, or have a body blocking the intended target
or were just common shots. The most challenging to get keepers of are digs and blocks,
as many attempts are made but few are successful. Thanks again for the kind words!

67skylark27 it is truly wonderful to see the work of a talent who has passion for their chosen sport... Your familiarity with volleyball is omnipresent in the lion's share of these brilliant renderings... Not only have you captured many superb dynamic moments but also the exuberant and sheer joy latent within this thrilling fast paced epic contest...

You have indeed mastered this genre to the nines!

And yes I'm totally in tune to the vast difference in image quality inherent within full frame over crop... while your D7200 is pretty much an even match for the D750 at basement ISO, however once it is pushed several stops above ISO 100 full frame's forte becomes a marked reality... besides as I'm certain you've noticed the viewfinder is so much brighter!

Thank you so much for sharing your settings.... they mean a lot to me (and I'm certain many others here) since I'm only an occasional sport shooter and shooting sports is so vastly different than studio... The only request I would like to make is that you might consider uploading the originals owing to the sad fact that UHH compression algorithms are not kind to IQ especially color balance...

Thanks again and please continue to post... you are a shining light leading others to follow in your footsteps... All the best on your amazing journey...

Thank you so much for the kind words! I will give it a go uploading the originals, I'll export them from Lightroom at a larger size also so it holds some details.

Here's a few volleyball shots from this week.
I tried a new setup. D750 full frame with the
Tamron G2 70-200 f2.8. It did a great job, the
pics needed minimal editing. The ISO was really
up there vs the D7200 and the 85mm f1.8.
Sometime reaching into the 10k range. I mostly
focused on timing and player reactions this go
around. Very fun games!
Settings wise - Auto ISO, f2.8, 1/800th,AF-Continuous
with 9 point, fully wide metering (not spot),and
back button focus. Vibration compensation off.

I've tried on more than one occasion to appreciate this type of music and I just don't get it. I'm not going to denigrate the musicians who are masters of their craft or those that like this type of music but it has no appeal to me. Kind of like scotch or any whisky for that matter, paintings by Jackson Pollack, and ice hockey.

For all those who like this type of jazz, whisky, and the other two I say the more power to you.

I was with you until you said ice hockey! Just watch the Stanley Cup finals one year - about 6 games
in and you will be hooked. Or go sit on the glass for a college hockey game a few times. It will
be time well spent. Fair warning - after going that, football will become very boring!

Always take a few insurance shots, some at 30 like you were thinking, then do some
at 25 and 20. Then you can see the differences and have a variety to learn from.
Make up a chart ahead of time of what you will shoot. Plus the milky way moves
pretty slowly so you can grab plenty of shots!!

I would recommend a fixed prime in the 85 or 105 range with an aperture of 1.4 to 2.0.
I use my 85mm on a crop sensor d7200 nikon body and get great portrait results.
The 70-200 f 2.8 on my full frame d750 works great also.

Tom

Here are just a couple more to show some different angles and subjects. This is college
level and I am sitting seven rows up, shooting with a D750 and Tamron G2 70-200.
f2.8 and 1/640th. Normally I move around for good angles but for this match I stayed
put. ISO's ended up 2800 to 4000. Very quick edits in Lightroom as I was traveling
back and forth to West Virginia and wanted to get them to my daughter right after
the game. I had 50 keepers, these four have good variety.

Many thanks for your wisdom and sharing your epic captures...
Lots and lots of valuable expertise here...

Both of those threads have considerable merit...
btw, how do your set your D7200 AF tracking sensitivity?
Have you found a "sweet spot" for this yet?

Thanks again 67skylark27

I had looked into that, mainly to adjust it to stay focused on one spot
or distance even if a hand or body got in between me and the subject
I wanted. I never really found an optimal setting. I had better luck
fine tuning my bbf timing. Once I had achieved focus, I'd release and
focus would automatically hold. Now, I have mastered anticipating
the players movements, and release it while being blocked and then
press again after the players moved. I leave my left eye open while
shooting too - that took some practice. So I follow the action with
the left eye somewhat, then frame the shot with the right and focus.
Back and forth, back and forth. If I am really close to the action I use
single point focus. If I am farther away, I use 9 point. I shoot their
numbers, not the face. The numbers provide better contrast and a crisp
line for the autofocus to grab.
