I have been a happy user of the d7200, but the sales pricing of the 850 has made me think of an upgrade.

Question is whether I am correct that my dx lenses while technically compatible with the 850 have limitations which mean I would not really get the benefit of the 850 and that I would also have to buy new lenses —- adding considerable expense.

A Sigma Art 24-105 f/4 is the primary lens on my D850 and does a great job for landscapes and cities when traveling. If you buy the D850, rent the Sigma Art for a test ride!

Software is so good today that the camera you use is really not that important. Replace the sky, change the color, denoise, crop, and just make a poor photo acceptable.

A good question ... or just a question trying to wind us up? My iPhone 11 Pro Max does a great job within a narrow window of available light and shadow, distance to my target, ability to frame within the background, etc. Obviously, this “window” is a helluva lot larger when using my D850, and I have a helluva lot more data to use in post-processing. Just my experience ...

I am shooting a Sony A7Riii, and normally only shoot hand-held. But I have rediscovered my old tripod and want to start using that for landscapes and macro. My question is: do I need to turn off the camera's built in optical stabilization when I am using a tripod, or do they work together? Thanks in advance

I don’t know about A7Riii, but Nikon recommends turning off IBIS when using tripod with Z7 II.

You will get a number of suggestions/recommendations. Here's mine: Peak Design Sling Strap. I like the way it connects to the camera and I like how easy it is to adjust. It can be worn around the neck or across either shoulder. Very versatile and reasonably comfortable.

Yup! I have a PD on every camera and set of binoculars I own. Very easy to install and adjust length. (BTW, I really like the PD tripod.).

I owned the updated version and sold it. I prefer the Sigma Art 24-105 f4 on my D850.

I wasn't referring to distortion. The new Z-mount lenses are sharper than comparable F-mount lenses. The new 24-70mm f/2.8 Z mount lens can resolve up to about 76 line pairs per millimeter. The most recent 24-70mm f/2.8 F-mount lens resolves at best about 44 line pairs per millimeter.

A technical explanation for why I enjoy using this lens so much (with Z7 II)! Thanks for sharing.

I am a Nikon shooter as is my wife. We are both in our 70's. Our gear is D500/D800 [me] D7000 [kept in car camera] and my wife's D7100. All our lenses are Nikon from 50mm, 70-200, 200-500 500 pf and 500 f4.
From what I have read and heard the Nikon mirrorless system is way behind Sony.
Is switching to mirrorless now or later going to give me better pictures? Besides being lighter AND having eye detection, will the Sony improve my photos? What exactly should I expect to see if I change? Not sure if my wife is interested changing but I thought maybe just a Sony body and the 200-600 for a start.

“... heard Nikon mirrorless system is way behind Sony” is not accurate and should not be a variable in the equation, IMO. My Z7 II is an awesome camera for landscape, street and travel photography, and there was very little learning curve going from my Nikon DSLR to the Z7.

My iPhone 11 Pro Max is not meant to replace my Nikons but is a quick-draw out of the pocket for a quick don’t-want-to-miss shot when my DSLR’s are not within easy reach.

I would like to upgrade my Nikon Z6 for the new Nikon Z6II. Nikon has a trade-in program where they estimate a trade-in price ($) based on your perceived item condition. Anyone have experience using Nikon’s program? Have you been satisfied with their estimate before and after the exchange?

I’ve had a couple of good experiences. They’re fast and easy. I did my homework and looked at other places that took trade-ins. Of course, you’ll almost always get more $$ if you take the time to sell it yourself.

I’m older and not so excited to lug around my 6D Mk II and lens on the upcoming trip to Hawaii. I’ve been there several times with important people in my life and pictures of how much we are enjoying our experience on the Pacific islands. So I’m shopping around for a point/shoot type (although even these are getting larger and as complex) to avoid the weight and bulkiness of it all. Because I am familiar with the Canon camera and nomenclature I honed in on the G7. What do you think?

I rented a G7X Mk II for a long hike in MT. I shot RAW and did PP in Lightroom. It did a great job. I bought the MkIII when it came out; probably has a little better autofocus. I carry the G7X in a camera holster on my belt whenever carrying my D850 or Z7 is not practical because rough terrain or don’t want to bring attention to myself in certain urban areas. The menus are not difficult, even though very different from my Nikons. I’ve had other small cameras that were too small for my hands. I like the G7X III and recommend it.

When I take a picture with my Nikon mirrorless camera the image is not available on the back of the EVF. I can access the pictures by using the arrow option on the back. My DSLR picture was available after taking the shot. I have been through the book and no mention of how to keep the picture for a longer period of time. Any ideas?...Thank You

On the Nikon Z7, there is a small button on the left side of the EVF that allows you to toggle between viewing pics through the EVF or LCD monitor, etc. You can adjust length of time pics play within Playback menu. Have fun!

I presently have a Nikon D750 and the following Tamron lenses: a Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 G2, a Tamron 70-200 F/2.8 G2, and a Tamron 17-35 F/2.8-4. All will work with the Nikon FTZ Adapter. I’m planning to buy a Nikon Z6 II or a Nikon Z7 II so I can lighten the load for travel. I was thinking about buying the Nikon 24-200 Z lens as a walk around lens. My Tamron 17-35 is light and that will fill out the lower end. Any recommendations on adding a low light Z prime to compliment this setup (35mm, 50mm).

Thanks for your help!

Mike

I travel with the Nikkor Z 24-70 f/2.8 + Z7 ii for landscape and city photos. For me, a “travel kit” is one camera and one lens along with my iPhone 11 Pro Max. For me, that’s traveling “light.”

The early verdict on this camera was that it (like many camera manufactured mirrorless camera's) it had trouble holding and acquiring focus on moving objects.
Nikon is not alone, I have issues with the Sony a9 and a7r4, and the new canon R5 has had issues.
When mirrorless do produce, they really deliver. I save 5 different focusing modes in my a9 and can quickly switch to the one I need for a particular scene.
When I first owned a Sony Mirrorless, the learning curve was steep on learning to quickly getting lock on focus.
Still, my keep rate is not up to my Nikon GROUP AUTO FOCUS focusing system.
My personal advice, get the Z7II if your shooting action shots, other wise the Z7 works great for still photography.
With all of this said, I am getting the hang of it. Below is a recent shot taken with the Sony a9 and Sony 600 mm f4, 1/3200 sec. f4 ISO 500. Red Shoulder Hawk with nesting material.
