It has been awhile since I have posted any pictures of my kayaking on the river. Weather has not cooperated this year. Nothing special just a look at my day.

I have a double convex, 3 inch diameter, glass lens from a discarded projection TV. Perhaps I can use that in the same way. It is the center element of a 3 element lens assembly.

Try and see what happens. I have seen people use a wine glass. You never know how something will look like until you try.

You're absolutely correct on the focusing ... & I thought about that ... but I'm leaving on a long trip in a few days & do not have the time to create a rig like yours. The suction cup holder is supposed to be "smaller than we think" (according to the marketing) ... so I'm hoping it won't interfere with the photos, who knows? I figured it was worth a shot given time constraints. I'm thinking of putting it on a tripod with my camera on another tripod during the trip. So I may end up building something like yours. Thanks for the input.

Good luck and enjoy your trip. Let me know how it works when you return. Always open for suggestions.

For those who do not have the time, inclination or skill to build the fancy rig KayakingUSA built & if cutting off a water bottle doesn't work for you, I noticed Amazon sells a stand/suction cup that can screw onto a tripod (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L3TN59S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I thought it was a good idea ... & might lessen the potential for dropping the crystal, so I'm going to try that.

The suction cup would hold the ball but it is not clear so you would have a dark stand showing in the picture unless you could remove in post processing. The other problem is that it isn't linked to the camera so holding it steady would be hard to do. The slightest movement would shift the image all over the place. With the rig everything stays steady and in focus since the focus is on the ball and the ball is linked to the camera.

I shared two of your images, the rig with the camera/crystal globe and one final result image to show our camera club members what you are doing. Our club has multiple people looking for ways to extend how they use their globes and this looks like a fine idea to go on location and doesn't look too challenging to build.

It is not hard to build. It does not have to be exact. Just long enough so the camera will focus on the ball and thick enough at the end where the camera mounts to line up with the ball on the other end. Mine worked out about 17 inches long. The back end is about 7/8 inch thicker than the front but then that depends on how high the ball is mounted. I cut the water bottle off about 1/2 inch above the neck which gave me about 1 3/4 cup to hold the ball. I hope your camera club will enjoy the challenge. Once made, all you have to do is hold it and aim like a rifle. Everything will be in focus after you once get focused on the ball. I put mine on manual focus so it would not try to re-focus.

Why did I think all pics shot through a crystal globe would display upside down?

They do. I rotated them before posting. Thanks for looking.

KayakingUSA ... I think you had a post about making that holder a month or two ago ... & from these photos, it's clear it was worth the effort. I've never taken any shots like that ... it's intriguing ... but I would think in order to do it well, it would be wise to have a decent holder like you made. Nice job.

The jig does make it easier. Once you get the camera focused on the ball, all the images are focused because no matter what you are taking a picture of, the image in the ball is where your focus is on. Thanks for looking.

Can you give us information on how to make the Chrystal ball holder? My wife got excited when I showed it to her.

Look at some of my previous post. When I first posted about the jig I gave the details of design. Thanks for looking. It is lots of fun experimenting with the ball.

Those are wonderful! I need to come up with something like your holder ... I never seem to find anything easy to place the ball on when I am out in the field.

Thanks for looking. There is nothing to the jig. The ball sits in a cut off water bottle on one end and the camera mounted on the other end.

Don't be to quick to judge. I live in North Carolina and and I have never seen a 100+ car pile up like they have up north where they claim to know how to drive in the snow. Maybe I should send them a pot of hot gravy to hold on their lap.
