What a nightmare I am experiencing getting my camera body and three lenses back from service.
First attempt “by end of business day”. So much for the “end” part. I was out riding my horse at 10:45 a.m. when they made the first delivery attempt.

Second attempt with same timeframe both my husband and I were home...he outside with the RV running (he does monthly service checks) and me 30’ from the front door tidying our indoor/outdoor porch. He saw nothing and I heard nothing. Obviously the driver didn’t make much of an attempt. I immediately called FedEx to complain and said WTF...how could he have missed us? Offered the option to have package left at local dropzone by 6 p.m.....guess what...package was never dropped.

Called FedEx again. By this time I was losing patience, getting frustrated and increasingly concerned about my expensive gear taking an east coast tour. Was told driver would make second attempt that evening. Three guesses (first two don’t count): no package.

It is now 6 a.m. on Day 3... do I know where my package is? Guess....see previous sentence above.

I am disgruntled, worried and expect to spend the day sitting on my front stoop...in the rain...with signs lining my (longish) driveway saying (in red ink)...hey FedEx guy, I’m here. Call me! Written in caps.

Moral of the story: think twice before requiring a signature. I thought I was doing the prudent thing, but it has come back to bite me in the *ss.

If you at some point asked for it to be routed to a local drop location (many Walgreens are designated drop locations along with FedEx Kinkos) I would bet that it is sitting there waiting for you.

Hi friends....I am looking for a very basic/intro editing program. I'm not opposed to 'free' for the moment to get a feel for how much I would use certain elements. I have tried a couple free programs in the past, but although the editing was relatively simple and successful, I could not open the newly edited photo on my computer. It all gets quite frustrating after awhile. Any suggestions?

As other have pointed out - I would go with Faststone. easy learning curve and is pretty comprehensive depending on how involved you want to be with your editing. For basic adjustments like brightness/contrast/denoise and sharpening, you can't beat it. If you want to get into color balancing or gamma adjustments, it will do that too.

And the price (FREE) is right too. Keep in mind, it is a Windows only product. MAC users have to go elsewhere.

I have hundreds of sentimentally precious photographs of our kids, sports cars, motorcycles, sailboats, etc. (You get the idea).
Want to digitize these.
Is it best to scan (not a high end scanner) or set up camera on a tripod and shoot pics of each?
And, if I shoot pics, ought they just be .jpg’s?

Scanning with a good quality scanner will give you better results due to fewer variables (positioning, keeping the photo flat, maintaining a 90 degree shooting angle, ...) and a high scan rate (dpi) that will give more detail.

There are typically local places who will do the scanning and give you CD/DVD of the files very quickly at low cost. If you have a large number of photographs, I would consider farming it out. What starts as a fun, "lets see what I remember" exercise rapidly turns into drudgery. Started doing my 'collection' a year ago - if my wife asks, meaning to get back to it soon ...

I have just scanned many color slides of my children when they were young and I want to give them a photo book of the pictures for their birthdays. I have seen a few examples of this in the past but did not get any info about where to get it done.

Can any of you Hoggers give me recommendations?

Very good quality and low price - printerpix.com. They also seem to have Groupons available that make it downright cheap ($5 per book). Go to Groupon.com and search for printerpix . I have used them for a few years now and never disappointed in the quality.

Very well stated! Multiple thumbs up!
Also, someone pointed out that you could get a program to bring back the start button - the button has been back for years at this point, without using the external program.

Using the 'old' interface instead of 'tiles' is a configuration item. You can make Win 10 look just like Win 7/8

I have tried to find out how to get photos transmitted from my wife’s Android phone into my iPhone?

The only hidden method found is for her to attach photo files to an email to me. That is impractical due to e-mail rules of allowing less that two attached files or the attempt will not be capable to send!?

An suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!! 😁

Easiest way is to simply send as a message. On the android phone, go into the gallery where the photo is and choose the share icon. Then select message and the recipient. Another option is to send via bluetooth directly to the iPhone. Again, using the gallery and share, select bluetooth. I can give you better instructions when I am back at home.

Hello once again I turn to the knowledge of the HHH. I was looking at videos, and so I got interested. I called sony because I am using a sonya6400. We set the camera in movie mode. Then I bought a rode videomic pro. The problem when I play the video back, I can barely hear what is being said. So I called sony , I got the audio set to 31 the max, and the playback to the max. Still can't hear much. so I sent the video mic pro back and now I am wondering if its not the camera. Sweetwater is supposed to send me a replacement mike. another problem is I don't know how much sound I am supposed to hear with the rode video mic pro plugged into the sonya6400, could it be the camera???

Thank you in advance

Hello once again I turn to the knowledge of the HH... (show quote)

Rode microphones are among the best out there. If its camera mounted, it should be able to record at/match the sound you heard as you recorded on playback. There are a number of things to check. Most mics have a multi switch on them that allow for flat (0) decreased (-1) and increased boost (+1). Check that it is set to 0 or +1. Most mics require batteries and many are 9 volt. If you reverse the battery and insert incorrectly, (reversing the polarity of the battery), the mic will not work. Make sure the mic is turned on - normally a small LED indicator will glow on the back of the unit.

Check the camera sound level settings. You can typically adjust volume recording levels in a menu. Look for the metering to peak just into the yellow area of the meter. Finally, make sure its plugged into the correct port on the camera. Some cameras have a remote connection that looks like the audio input and I have seen folks plug into the wrong on.

depending on your camera, you often can use earphones to listen to the recording level as you record. If you can't hear while recording, chance are the problem is at the mic.

I don't have any familiarity with your camera so just trying to offer some common problems with easy answers.

I think you had a very good start but it fell short. The scene and lighting were good but the sun and reflections distract me. The blue of the sky having very few clouds is very pretty. The foreground is sharp The sun forced the left into the shadows creating an unpleasant conflict with the right side of the print. I would crop of the left side and remove the reflections and wisps of clouds.

The real missed opportunity is not shooting vertically. I suspect you shot horizontally but correct me if I am wrong. I do not like how the tree top is lopped off and would like to see more of the foreground and sky. I typically shoot vertically with a lot of overlap and as far as I can horizontally. That way, I have more cropping choices in LR.

Thanks for posting and let me know what you think.

Thanks for the input. Yes, back then I was still shooting pano's horizontally. The biggest issue I am seeing is the foreground. I remember shooting so that the overgrown and browned foreground that - at the time - I thought was overwhelming and non-descript. These days would have included more and give myself more cropping possibilities. One of the things I kind of like about the image is the dark to light movement withing the image. Thats why I included the sun/flares. Maybe I need to re-evaluate that aspect.

Appreciate your comments

Then there is the off-color - What do you call a dead deer with no eyes and no genitalia ? will let you think about that one ...

I once used a IBM Microdrive, but I was always afraid of it jamming or just loosing data, so I used cards less than 1 gig on my first Fuji S1. Eventually I gave my wife the smaller cards for her little Nikon and I started to go big time with 2 & 4 gig cards; then bigger. Now my Nikon 750 uses two SD card and my Nikon 800 uses one too. Couple the physical card differences with the larger file sizes those smaller cards seem to have zero use. In the back yard, I've buried a family dog and more than a few cats, but I probably have room for the CF cards too? <g>

I use the smaller ones (1 - 4gb) as flash drives if moving data between 2 pc's or if I want to have a copy of documents backed up and carried with me. For text storage, they are quick and easy. I also carry a very small USB reader that will plug into any pc. I have seen where parents will sometimes carry old CF cards with them containing their kids info and picture in case its ever needed in an emergency. Also a good way to carry critical medical info in case you are incapacitated.

A USB drive is actually better for this since most people have a USB connection available commonly but it gives a use for the Cf cards collecting dust.

When I think landscapes, I think in terms of something more like a 24-70. The 70-300 will do fairly well if you see some wildlife but could be a little short to get any detailed shots to crop.

I agree with you - a shorter lens should also be included for the outing with just a single body. With nature, some of the best shots come from up close (like detail in a tree bark pattern) or a wide panorama shot that conveys the way the area looks. Personally I would take the 70-300 and a wider lens as well. I don't do much bird photography so when I do nature photography, its seldom with anything more than a 125mm and normally use my 24-70 for 90% of what I shoot.

Opening each image in separate tabs and clicking back and forth between them I don't see any difference. That includes in checking several places in double-download mode. Maybe it's my laptop.

Thanks for looking at it - the biggest impact I was trying to achieve in the final edit is the sky and where the sky can be seen behind the leaves. On my monitor, the noise is reduced and the vegetation sharper. I have been wondering if my extra time spent on the final edit is worth it and if most people could see the difference.

Thanks for letting me know for your setup, there does not appear to be any change. Wonder if others see improvement in the final.

Playing with an older panorama from 4 years ago. Its a 9 panel stitch and some processing post merge in Lightroom.

Not sure if I like or hate the sun reflections. Comments about that or the shots ?

Including a 'final edit' is there a visible difference ?

Yes, that is it. English Sparrow and House Sparrow are the same bird. And an invasive species first introduced into New York City in 1852. It is the most wide spread wild bird in the world. Including Iceland and one of the islands of Japan in 1990.

Or if you are ever in the Pittsburgh area - those are known as "Sputzies" . I have no idea where the name came from but it took me 3 or 4 years after I moved to Pittsburgh to find out that people were referring to what I know as sparrows.

I think the term sputzie comes from the german or dutch heritage in the 'Burgh. NorthSide Joe - you know the origin ???

Tell you what, this thing has been sitting for quite a few years, I can send it to you Priority Mail in a small box if you will just pay postage. If you want the original box, I would have to use a medium-sized box, but the postage would be higher. I will check for the exact amount for the postage and get back to you. If you would send a check or money order for the postage, there will be no charge for the cable.

If you would be interested in a Turbo battery (not the RCA plug type) I have one, but the internal battery would have to be replaced. Price for replacement would be in the neighborhood of $50 or so.

I would love to have battery and cable. Let me know how I should pay for postage and I will get the payment to you asap. No need for original box. I sent my direct email address to you by Private Message

Thanks
