I have had a canon powershot for sometime now and I pretty much get the idea of the iso, shutter speed, and aperture. So now I want to buy my first DSLR because I know they are much more versitile and a point and shoot camera. Where should I start and what is the best beginner DSLR?

As a Beginner approximately 3 years ago, I was looking for my 1st DSLR Camera, did much research, and finally chose a used Nikon D3300 with the Nikon 15-55mm kit lens. I still have my D3300, it has been a very good learning DSLR Camera, nice easy to understand menu, easy to understand and operate this D3300. Today I have 4 Lens, sold the 18-55 kit lens, bought a Nikon 18-140mm 3.5-5.6, also have the Nikon 55-200, and 2 Prime lens, a 35mm 1.8g & a 50mm 1.8g. I will always suggest this D3300 camera to any Beginner or even a Advanced Beginner, it has served me very well for 3 years now, and I plan on many more, at 69 years old, not sure I will need an upgrade, on my Camera!

One day, a little girl asks her mother

"Tell me mother, how were the parents born?

"Well," her mom replied, "it's God who created the first human parents, Adam and Eve.

Adam and Eve had children who later became parents in turn and so on.

This is how the human family was formed. "

Two days later, the girl asks the same question to her father.

This one answers her:

"You see my daughter, millions of years ago, monkeys slowly, evolved to become the human beings we are today."

The puzzled little girl returns immediately to see her mother:

"Mom, ... But how is it possible for you to tell me that the first parents were created by God and that dad told me that they were monkeys that evolved?"

And the mother to answer her very calmly, while smiling:

"It's very simple, darling, I told you about my family ... and your father was talking about his" !!!!

It is funny, but also sad, that anyone would consider or believe that we came from Monkies. And if we go to a Zoo, do people actually believe they are looking at someone's future relatives in transition, then one day they go back to the Zoo and meet their Neighbors or maybe Uncle Joe behind the glass enclosure!!

As a possible back-up camera to your Nikon D7200, you might consider a used Nikon D3300. I have this camera, has performed very well for me for over 2 years now, bought it used, after diligent research.

The term "narcissism" comes from the Greek myth about Narcissus (Greek: Νάρκισσος, Narkissos), a handsome Greek youth who, according to Ovid, rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. This caused Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus "lay gazing enraptured into the pool, hour after hour," and finally changed into a flower that bears his name,

Very interesting and a very nice looking flower too.

for those who know me from my recent Macro posts, also know that I recently had a lumbar fusion.
Things started going south last weekend when I thought my 2 week headache was fading.
Well it wasn't lol.
At this point I am leaking spinal fluid under the skin in my lower back.
The Dr examined and tested a fluid sample from under the skin and found it to be
almost exclusively spinal fluid.
The leak is to large for a blood patch.
So Monday the surgeon is going to remove the hardware and bone grafts in order to find the leak
and repair it.
They will be introducing fluids to keep my brain afloat during the process.
They will then attempt to install the rods and screws again if they are successful.
I can't begin to tell you all how much I am NOT looking forward to this.
I am hoping this is an easy fix, but the surgeon is not hopeful lol.
He is probably the best in the area, has 32 years experience at trauma crash surgeries.
So I do believe I am in the best hands possible.
Needless to say, photographing will be another ways off for me. Perhaps I will catch some
of the nesting season at the Rookery.

Anyone here had a nasty Dura leak ? how did it go ?
Thanks

Danniel

Hello Daniel,
I am sorry to hear about your terrible Back situation, it sounds very complicated. I will hope all is successful and you will recover A.S.A.P. and be able to return to those you love and those that love you. We here at UHH will look forward to hearing from you again once you are able to return to your love of Photography. Best wishes on a successful surgery and recovery.

Sony a6300 30 mm macro, f7.1, 1/13 sec, ISO 6400. Taken in shade of garage, cloudy, overcast, around 7:30. At our latitude sun sets about 8:15.

As a Advanced Beginner, I would guess that your ISO is to high, and or your Shutter-Speed is to slow. You need a proper balance of "Light" in your "Exposure Triangle", ISO + Aperture + Shutter-speed.
Now saying that, your Histogram would present to you a good explanation of your Exposure, and I will say it will be far to the right, with some unrecoverable overexposed pixels.

I have heard, without any proof, that the D7200 is a better DSLR for reasons that I do not recall, than the D7500, maybe read it hear at UHH, but quite unsure where that this idea that I have registered in my memory originally came.
So, please do not take offense any of the owner's of the Nikon D7500, because my statement may have been totally inaccurate.
Please correct me in my understanding with an accurate and if available, a corrected explanation.
Thank you.

What is a valid reason to use cell phones as cameras is the fact that we carry them anywhere. Quality wise they are not for big enlargements but we do not do that everyday. You will be in "auto" all the time with the cell phone so if you really want to explore photography and make better images you need to study the basics and buy an entry level camera that will give you better quality.

Totally agree!
A smartphone is 1st a Phone, for speaking, hearing, and Texting, then if something of interest or something possibly unexpected presents itself, in a moment of time, and a regular Digital Camera is unavailable, then yes, that Smartphone may become a Camera.
But adding "Creativity" with a Smartphone is less achievable, than a with a DSLR or Mirrorless Camera.

Camera bodies: Nikon D850 + Nikon D 500
Lenses: Nikon 70-200, Nikon 300mm prime, Nikon 500 mm ED PF VR(not taking Nikon 24-70 and 28-300)
Situations:
1. Ranthambhore National Park, India - jeep safaris, awesome tiger sightings, usually within 100 m or so, sometimes much closer; sometimes right next to the jeep !!; 4 pax to a jeep (thus some flexibility of movement but not a lot !)
2. Tanzania - Ndutu; Asanja Moru.....Serengeti to see the great migration. Obviously huge amounts of action, but having never been there, I hear you need reach for lenses etc

Question: which lenses to which cameras for which situations ? Recommendations please on the "kit" you would take and which lens would you fit to which body for these two situations.

I am sorry if I am asking too much.....and would truly appreciate genuine responses vs some I've had in the past that are judgemental and snarky.

Greetings everyone,

I recently purchased a Canon EOS Rebel T7i. I also purchased a "nifty fifty" lens for it as well. My question is when I am trying to calculate a formula using the focal length of the lense ( such as DOF) should I use the raw focal length of the lense or should I use the focal length x crop factor to calculate it? For example, it's a 50mm lens, but when you use the crop factor it's 50mm x 1.6= 80mm. Which one should I plug into my DOF calculator to find my DOF?

Thank you,

Elfman9

I hike with a group and can’t stop and take the time to pull out, compose shots, and repack my Olympus OM-D E-M10. It’s not fair to the other hikers.

So I would like to get a capable, very compact, camera for hikes. My cellphone just isn’t good enough to get the quality of pictures I’m looking for.

I’ve done my research, and I’m leaning towards a Canon Powershot Elph 360 HS. I like the frame to frame speed, and 12x optical zoom. Any concerns about the choice, or other alternatives in a similar price range ~$200?

Two points, won’t go bigger, not up for arguments about taking the Olympus, I’ll do that when I’m not with the group.

You might consider the Panasonic Lumix brand of P&S cameras, I owned one and it created very nice images.

I was recently asked to consider doing casual, on location( not sure where yet) Senior Portaits for an acquaintance's son. I told her that I did not have much experience with taking portraits, only practice session for a photography class assignment. She said that's okay, if I don't do it, she will probably just take them with her phone camera. I'm not even sure she will be submitting them to his high school yearbook, since she said she will not be buying one. I did not think to ask about that. She said for me to come up with a price.

Since I have never done a paying Portrait Session before, my question is, does anyone have an idea of what I should charge for a session? I have a strong suspicion I will not be doing the prints, but will give her a flash drive or SD card with the prints on it. However, if I do the prints, would I just double the cost per print?

Any decent ideas on this would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
PhotoNat

Remember; LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION, that will have a strong impact on how your Portraits are enjoyed by your client. Is it a small room in a house? A open field with no trees? A beautiful, quiet Park with some nice Shade trees?
If outside, early morning or late afternoon will offer you the best natural light.
There are many other things you should be aware of concerning " Portrait Photography.
The right or wrong Clothing will effect the finished Portrait too.
Just some of my thoughts, hope it goes well and successful.

Why buy lenses from let’s say Tamron or Sigma, as opposed to OEM lenses from the camera manufacturer? Wouldn’t Nikon lenses for Nikon cameras or Canon lenses for Canon cameras, etc. be better in general than third party lenses?

If cost is the main issue, wouldn’t a used OEM lens in excellent condition be better in general than a new third party lens? I guess used third party lenses still beat out used OEM lenses cost wise.

I understand that Tamron and Sigma lenses are popular. Just curious as to why?

Now when I was doing my Research to buy my first DSLR camera, I read somewhere that Whatever Camera brand you have, you should use the same corresponding brand of Lens with that particular Camera.
As a Beginner, I chose a Used Nikon D3300, and I presently own 3 used Nikon Lens, 35mm 1.8g, 50mm 1.8g, 18-140mm 3.5-5.6. Now that is just my personal choice, others will differ, I am sure!

Well. I have reading about the D500 and really have GAS. Currently have an awesome d7200 and do love it. I am wondering if the are any advantages I would get with the D500. Would I get sharper photos. Would I get better low light photos. Will the high iso photos be better.

I will request from you, your overall experience with your D7200. I have a D3300 and am possibly considering a move up to a D5600 or the D7200,
Your, thoughts, opinion, suggestion will be appreciated.
