You have not given enough info for a dead on answer, but I can tell you where I would start I first attach my camera to a strobo frame. This is for my flash. I want to raise my flash above my camera, changing the angle of the flash. ( this eliminates or at least reduces the amount of lens flare I get in glasses). Mine also lets me flip my camera from horizontal to vertical and keeps my flash dead center over my lens, so my lighting is consistent. I would then mount a Magmod defuser to the front of my flash, this softens the harsh shadows, and also helps with lens flare. My camera is set at f5.6 or f8, iso around 400, shutter at around 100-125, these are my starting numbers. Get there early and test and adjust s accordingly. Flash I would start with til, jus because you may be dealing with different lighting durning the even.

I shoot HS BB for a local paper. I have used my D810 no flash, it did a nice job. Now I’m shoothin my grandsons YMCA basketball. Gym lighting not so great. Now using my Nikon D850, no flash, auto iso, lens 70-200 f2.8, shutter at 200. Camera is doing a great job, love the results.

I’m always looking at the latest, greatest Nikon has to offer. And I have also had great Nikon cameras from the N6006 and all thru the Nikon digital lineup: D1h, D2h thru to my current models D810 and D850. The fact is of all these cameras I don’t think I have used Moore than 10% of what they are capable of.

I think you will change your mind about never using it in DX mode. I've have both the D810 and D850 and have found several occasions to use them both in the DX mode, and also in the 1x1 mode. You'll be surprised.

If I was starting today looking to buy my first camera, I would focus on mirrored camera. That is the direction all Amerasian or headed. I’m a Nikon user, but knowing what I know today I think I would have a hard time choosing between Nikon and Sony. Also when choosing a camera that has interchangeable lens what you will be shooting will determine your lens selection. My general walking around lens is a 24-120 mm f/4. It’ a great starting range. It will work for family and friends and landscape. Good luck and happy shooting - it’s addictive.
