I have been involved in photography for the past several years. I have been an art teacher for the past 17 years, but have been utterly smitten with photography. I am taking classes, reading, shooting daily and keeping in the learning curve. I am gaining valuable experience with doing the prom annually, senior portraits, family portraits, some formal sports pics, graduation, work for a local magazine, and so on. I would really be interested in making a living doing what I love, however what aspect of photography could I possibly do that would come remotely close to my current salary? It's a very small rural area...
Also wondering if taking my CPP test would be beneficial to my cause?

To earn the most money to replace your teaching job I would suggest going into wedding photography, children/family portraits and pet portraits. Those are the most lucrative areas to replace a full time salary. Good luck.

Exhibit A

See the review by "Iceman." He bought a Hasselblad. It cost $17,000. Even though he's a "casual photographer." He bought it to take to Disneyland, and gave it a low rating because it didn't come with a lens and doesn't do video.

It is unbelievable how many people buy expensive DSLR's thinking they will get top notch shots with a better camera when all they really need is a point and shoot. Most that buy DSLR's will never buy other lenses or filters. What a waste of money. When will they wake up and realize they don't need to spend excessive amounts on a camera when they only take it out of the closet for an occasional birthday party or special holiday. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!

Hi all,
I've been reading the fourms for a few days now and notice that no one seems to use Pentax. I'm new to Pentax and SLR potography. I have used a Canon PowerShot A590 in the past, and still do use from time to time, but wanted to get more serious with my photography without jumping right into the big money professional cameras. I have a Pentax K-r I bought last years and have a tri/unipod, lenses smc 18-55 & smc 55-300 & a lens hood so far. I want to invest in a better flash than the built in one and I think a macro lens would be nice. I mainly shoot indoor basketball games and dance. Outdoor action shots of birds & dogs and I like playing around with macro shots.
Any thoughts or advice for a new SLR user?

I have been a happy Pentax user for about 50 years. And I
use all screw mount lens on my Pentax *istDL (with adapter) and my K mount lens on my Pentax K10D. You
can't get better.
I have an adapter mount for reversing the lens for macro for sale in the 'for sale' section.

I have a Pentax K100D and love it. The only thing I would love to upgrade from its 6.1 pixels especially for cropping photos. Unfortunately the Pentax that I am looking at is running around $1,200 to $1,300. At the present time it is out of my budget range but I can dream anyway.

I am going to add one to the fun. This is my 8 year old Siberian Husky watching through the sliding glass door as my daughter's three young dogs play catch in our backyard. Looks like she wants to join the fun!

Sorry, didn't mean to make the picture so large. Not sure what to do to make it smaller.

He's beautiful Brenday.

A comment to all of you who posted a picture. They are great! I'm a very shy "photographer" and usually don't stop people to take photos. But, after looking at your images, well, maybe it'd be easier for me to stop and ask someone if I could take a picture of their dog? Thank you!!!

Go for it, it's a good way to start and most people will be thrilled to have you take their pets portrait. At the same time it will be good for you, where you tend to be shy, and give you practice in approaching people. Who knows what other areas it will open you up to and help you feel more comfortable in asking people to take their shots. You can do it, just keep plugging, the more you do it the easier it becomes. Good luck and keep us posted how it goes.
