Very nice set, Larry! Could you please identify the bird in #3 and the ducks on the left in #4, please?

I have had good luck with that unless they are right up against whatever makes up the background. When they fly over open water with trees in background but not real close it has been no problem. I took the liberty of posting an example.

Beautiful shot! This is the type of photo I wasn't able to lock focus on. I was on target with my focus points, but the camera/lens simply wouldn't lock focus. It was weird.

Hi Patty, I wish I could be more help in answering your question. It has been a long time since I had that camera and honest I don't recall, but case 3 rings a bell. There is lots of information on the internet about 5DIV AF settings for action photography. I would suggest going to YouTube and search for Canon 5dIV autofocus setting for action photography. I'm sure there is a bunch of information about settings. What I always was confused about were the case settings, but if you figure that out, it will be quite helpful. Good luck. As I said, this camera is really good for the right applications. Just not sure fast moving birds is one of them, but it can be done. And Canon's 600 f/4 is a gem and works great with a 1.4x converter. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks, Nalu. I'll do some more searching for info on the settings. The case settings get confusing for me, too. I do enjoy the challenge, though!

I had that combo and never really had much luck with flight photography with it. My keeper rate was much less than 25%. At that length and that body, simply put, it's going to be tough, but it can be done. Shooting without the converter and at high shutter speeds will probably provide better results, but you will have to crop. The good news is that the 5DIV with the 600 and converter will provide excellent results for perching (stationary) subjects. I really enjoyed that combination for the right applications. Sorry, but the fact is, the 5DIV is a bit antiquated from a focusing perspective compared to the newer mirrorless bodies.

Nalu, I meant to ask you which IS mode you used for birding. I have mine set to mode 1 right now, but am wondering if mode 3 would be best. Any thoughts on that?

I'm in my late 80's and suggest a small. red dot gunsight mounted on your hot shoe. B & H can help you put it together. With the sight, after adjusting for parallax, you're looking above the camera with both eyes open; finding and tracking a BIF is much easier.

That's an interesting thought, Floyd. Thank you for your suggestion!

I may be wrong but I feel trying to focus on a bald eagle from a long ways away is tough for the camera. The eagle is predominantly dark so it is hard to grasp the contrast it needs. When in flight I usually use a zone focus area and try to keep the eagle “in the box”. I use the focus area right after the 9 point focus point. Easier to focus on the eagle flying especially if against the sky.

Thanks for your input, Mi! I also wondered if there just wasn't enough contrast for the camera to pick up the eagle. I've never used that wide of a focus area, as I'm always concerned the camera will choose to focus on something other than my subject. It would work well against the sky, but once there's anything in the background, I think it'll be a challenge. Have you had success using the wider zone with a busier background?

Thank you for your insight, Nalu. It's much appreciated! I have a 7DII that I want to try with this lens, without the converter. Just curious to see how it reacts. It sounds like I need to lower my expectations for BIF.

Patty these look pretty darn good for your first time with it. You might try a remote release to. See if that helps. Any little vibration or just from your heart beat can cause vibration.

Thanks, Jack. I'll keep working at it :)

Terrific shots!! I haven't been to L&D 15. I need to make another road trip! I was at L&D 13 a couple days ago, and there were well over a hundred eagles there. Love watching them! Thanks for sharing!
