We had major rain yesterday afternoon and overnight, with some areas receiving over 2 1/2 inches. Streets flooded here in the city and rivers climbed over their banks in nearby New Jersey.
Just like in yesterday's postings, once the storm went through, the air was exceptionally clear. I took the top photo shortly after my breakfast…still dark sort of, as you can see. The pan is a five shot image; same foreground as yesterday, different sky. In the third image, I guess whatever is on the phone is more beautiful than the sky above them. The last shot was taken a couple of days ago, probably just as the sun cleared the horizon.

Thanks all for kind remarks, hogs. FYI, sunrise in NYC is about 7:20, so I have to find things to do for an hour and a half or more.

The nor'easter is well north and east. We have CAVU conditions. I shot these 10 minutes before dawn from my roof. The pan consists of 5 images.

Nice set, I'm curious what's a backside snowflake?

After the nor'easter passes, the winds come in from the northwest, rather than from the northeast. They bring in colder temperatures, turning the remaining rain into snow.

Well, all we got here in the city was rain, with about 20 minutes of backside snowflakes. North and west of us got up to a foot. Tuesday night and Wednesday it will disappear with another nor'easter, this one all rain.
As you can tell from the first image, I live on the wild side, standing right in the middle of the road in the city of over 8 million people.

Thanks all.
For those of you who've never been here, the city mostly is like a huge bunch of villages surrounding commercial areas. True, we don't have open spaces like the great plains, but we do have parks, and reasonably wide open spaces just a short drive away. We also have the ocean (open space, yes?). Within a few hours drive or less, we have hunting, fishing, camping, skiing and pretty much everything else for outdoor lovers.
We also have some of the best of medical care and teaching hospitals in the world, the finest opera, theater and museums found anywhere, and in a city that never sleeps, practically anything you need as far away as your cell phone.
That's why I retired to here, even with big city problems that are also common elsewhere.
Happy New Year, people.

Had to make a trip across the city to get my wife's car for her. I decided I would once again wander down the Hi Line, which goes directly behind the school she runs. Getting there required a bus, a subway line, and then another subway line. Connections were good; I made it in about 25 minutes.
The Hi Line is a city park converted from an old raised freight line that serviced primarily the meatpacking district, up until about World War II, I think.
I spent about 45 minutes this time. The day got brighter, but the wind picked up to give more of a windchill.
The first three shots are underground. The fourth is of something known as the Park Vessel. I might've known what it was for at some time, but I do know that very soon after it opened, someone jumped from it.
The fifth shot shows a slightly different type of Christmas tree on a spur of the freight line. Shots 6, 7 and 8 are reasonably self-explanatory, with number 7 showing the train tracks. The penultimate image is a view from the street of an original trestle (or is it a bridge?). And number 10 shows one of my minor hobbies, taking shots of people taking shots.

All ages and all body shapes showed up. Photographers were loaded with equipment, including waders to be right among the swimmers.
The drum Corps played constantly.
For those of you who are looking at this posting as the first, there are two previous postings. I had over 200 images to choose from; these are pretty much representative.

People took their dogs and their kids for a swim.

For those of you who started with this section, I have a previous posting that explains everything.

Since 1903, (except for one Covid year), some perfectly sane souls welcome the new year in Coney Island by taking a refreshing plunge into the Atlantic ocean. The 6000 pre-registered swimmers lined up early to get their wrist-bands to swim in the protected zone between 11a.m - 2 p.m.
I am posting my photos in three sections. In the first, I start with a couple of general scenes. The second and third will be the swimmers entering, cavorting in and leaving the ocean.
In this first posting, I try to show a little bit of the area. Photo number one is the iconic parachute drop and photo number two gives an indication that I got there early. In photo number three, you can see the drum core in blue, getting ready to bring the swimmers down to the ocean from the pavilion behind them. The remaining photos show that I did not get into the ocean (except in advertently). That could explain why you have only certain views.

And a friend of mine almost was: six months of recovery time. I just do not understand why traffic rules for them are not enforced… Well, I probably do, and wish there were some way of enforcing the traffic laws. The problem is, there is no monetary recovery possible for their victims.

bike messenger not to ride on the sidewalks.
That doesn't bother me nearly as much as their going the wrong way on one-way streets, and not paying any attention to traffic lights. If I hit them with my car, it's my fault.

Traffic on the East River starts early and ends late.
I shot the second image while sitting in a booth in the diner. Somewhere within a half mile or so someone is about to receive breakfast. Many of us here in the city have kitchens that are only large enough for 3/4 of a person, so the takeout business thrives.
The owner of the restaurant has told me he would hire as many of these immigrants who want to work for him. They are reliable, grateful and willing to work in all types of weather. He thinks many or most tend to send part of what they make back to their families.
