Well, Socialism is already here in the USA. I don't know why you would worry about that anymore. That battle/war is already over. Like my WWII vet father, I want an end to Nazi's, that war was already won.
The 3 R's as you call them were taught by Public School teachers, like me. Home Schooling/Charter Schools, Religious/Ethnic/Private schools abound today. How's that working out? Many of them don't even require Certified Teachers, a warm body is all most Home Schooled children get.

When Birth Control works so well that national populations are in decline... like China, What can a nation do?
Remember when China limited families to one child? Result, more boys survived birth, girls didn't because... parents wanted help in rural areas.
