You must have somebody who wants you to scout out the venue for their "Destination" wedding...…. Just suggesting.

I've got a working Southern Pacific Depot in Reno. I'm overdue to capture it. I'll have to wait for cooler weather and the smoke to clear.

If it makes more sense to you to waste your limited time creating complex and information-laden folders and file names instead of embedding all that same data and the time doing it inside the LR catalog, software you pay to use, well it's your time and money to use (not use) as you please.

LR lets you use the simplest folders and file names such as "YYYYMMDD <Description>" for your folders and retain the original 12345678.xxx file names, The files don't mean anything until the LR edit data is merged with the original image and "export" to a target file. Worry about renaming the files, if needed, when you export the edited version.

The effort spent trying to 'describe' the images via complex folders and / or file names just needs to instead be performed inside LR so you can find those images instantaneously via the catalog search / filtering. You don't have to remember your shooting dates, just put that descriptive data into the keywords.

The reality of using a database to access your images is you just have to behave differently. You access your images via LR, not the computer OS / file system. Use a simple file system that uniquely organizes the images and don't spend time trying to move the images around afterward. LR is much more efficient and capable. Yes, it's different. It's modern-ish. Just like LR is superior to ACR. If you don't want to use the most popular software in the industry to work smarter and faster, it's your choice and your loss (and your money).

The point is: yes, it's critical to organize and identify your images. The LR catalog is the way to do this entirely inside a searchable database, again with much more robust tools and capabilities vs the OS file system. Yes, penmanship was important. But today, your typing speed and accuracy is the relevant skill. Both are communication skills, but one doesn't really matter anymore. That's the same as the unimportance of folders and filenames in the modern LR environment.
If it makes more sense to you to waste your limite... (show quote)

I agree with all you say, but I can't find it 'splained anywhere. No real file layout diagram, no 'splained hierarchy, and no really understandable, by me, tutorials. I like Jim Gray's but it takes forever to get to the point, just about to where I forgot the point that I really wanted to know!

My experience with Adobe, going back decades, since I'm from that Industry, is they're very Apple oriented. That means their intuition has to be the same as mine. And it AIN'T!

So my Catalog, undefined to me as that term is, is flat as a board, and real easy to screw-up.

But I like the sliders, and can process and convert most of what I shoot decently, and WAY better than in the ever smelly dark, so I'm OK!

Did you discard your negatives after making your prints?

Exactly. I still have about 10 Arcival Boxes of negs and slides from the film DAZE. Just need a scanner and some motivation and some time.
But at 77, I'm still young yet!

I like #1.
#2, while I like the tone and luminance of the reflections, it works against the subject, much like dappled sunlight in a foreground or background would distract from a portrait. If composed alone as an abstract, I could look at the reflections all day!

Both are well executed photographs, I think #1 is the better composition.

20 sq. mm of her expression, covered by a MASK!!!!! Lots of gesture, lost expression. Great shot, and especially the contrast.

Just HATE the MASKS!!!
Venting Rant, over, thanks,

One of the tasks for the photographer is to select a subject. A scene--or scenic photo is just that, and the scene is the subject. Photo 1. Sharp focus throughout.

However, folks mention picture within a picture. Perhaps you can select a composition within the scene and call it a composition and choose your focal(and focus) point from there.

Another choice beyond cropping is to selectively focus, and depending on the light and conditions, selectively expose the "subject" within the frame. Arranging the rest of the scene to support the subject.

Nothing worse than a Photo with no subject. It's not even a snapshot! Don't be that guy/gal.

My Photo 1 professor probably said: "What's the subject?" at least 100 times in each class! Even more than he said, "Hemmm, nice composition (Craig), but it's not SHARP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once you identify what caught your interest (eye??), you've identified a subject. Focus on that and compose (frame) an image(s) around it. Then look for more possible compositions with other subjects, and shift your focus and exposure there.

More fun this way, I promise. To start, stick to one focal length, like a normal for your camera lens. Then move the frame around the scene to isolate and frame various compositional/subject candidates. This exercise will get you used to selecting what pleases you and your intended viewer. When you have this down, try with a good zoom, and see what that exercise give you. Don't be afraid to crop.

I have a Brother that prints on 81/2 x 11 inch paper--I assume very close to A10, but also accepts longer and wider paper as well. It is a Printer Fax, Copier and Scanner as well as printer. It is easy to print double sided, too. It was reasonably priced under HP and far more robust build. It connects in several ways including Parallel, USB and Ethernet. I have it on ethernet to my router. It is available to all of my network and wi-fi connected devices. 3 years and going strong. And economical on toner.

Yep, if I was going to buy a used FWD truck I'd shop in Phoenix or San Diego. The odds are it would never been off the road.

AND, never exposed to road salt.

Not only has this truck worked for a living, it has worked a long time. That's what they are FOR!

That's where the magic lies! The mist, the clouds, the shadows and especially the storms and snow. For many centuries, this place has held a haven and sanctuary for humans and wildlife alike.

Glad you visited and love it as so many do. And I especially love your photograph. A great capture.

PS, I agree with the crop suggestion. Just a little tighter.

What an interesting and very complete study of this Coupe de Ville! It is an inspiration for me to cover Hot August Nights starting here next week!
PS: The Manhattan Transfer Jazz vocal group has a singer/character nick named Eldorado Cadillac,. When in character he's in full Pimp Splendor; wide brimmed hat to Zoot suit pants. In a phrase of one of his songs he sings, "When I was just a mere Coupe de Ville....."

Classic, in any color.

My son showed me photos from a recent Oregon trip taken with his IPhone 12. He's a fine, and trained photographer with a great eye. My comment was, "who needs a point and shoot, or even a Bridge when you and get these results?"
