Per the Copyright office, the symbol should only be used when the copyright has been registered. It's perfectly OK to say "Copyright 2011" without the symbol.

Break out the handcuffs! Seriously, thanks for the info. Had no idea. Will share with my fellow copyrighters. :)

Do NOT use the copyright symbol © unless you have registered the copyright, which involves a fee. However, you can say "Coypright 2011" without the symbol. Even if you don't, you are the copyright owner. If someone violates your copyright, the onus is on you to prove it, unless you have registered it. In that case, it's "No contest."

Am I understanding it would be "illegal" to use the symbol unless you register? Not that because everybody does it makes it right, but I don't know of anyone who has done the registration. They just use the symbol. I assumed they were interchangeable. Way more complicated than I thought this would be!

it should be the year the photo was taken

from research I did some time back the most commonly accepted is

copyright year name

thank you! That is what made the most sense to me, but don't know that sense is involved sometimes!!!

I understand that if I take the photo then I own the copyright. My question is about the date. Do you use the date you took the photo, or the current year date, or no date at all? (Like just the copyright symbol and my name?). I have searched around on the internet but haven't found anything that addresses this question. Also, I don't intend to register with the U.S. Copyright office. Just want it be known that an images belongs to me. Thanks for any advice.

I have enjoyed reading the advice offered on this site for a few months and have learned a lot. Thanks for sharing your expertise and advice. I would appreciate input as to a good quality scanner to be used to catalog years of family photos (before I went digital). I also have several different sizes of negatives 35mm, 110 film, and others. I am considering the Canon 9000F. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have an Epson Perfection V500 that does a great job. Slides, negatives, positives. It will also do medium and large format negatives but there is a work around for them. Otherwise there are trays (carriers) for the slides and negs. Was more than $200 and have had it for several years. Also does PDFs. They still make this model. Check Amazon, or maybe eBay. Good luck!

I love them! I need to get Topaz!!!

What version? I am on their website and there are many different products. Thanks

I think I used Topaz Clean or Simplify or both.Adjust is also very interesting for many different effects. The Topaz software cost is reasonable but I warn you,you will spend a lot of time playing with your photos.

Any chance you would reveal just a bit more about how you used Topaz. I have Clean, Simplify and Adjust but can't seem to find a setting or combo of settings that give that bold painterly effect. Thanks

No problem,I have no secrets.Below I enclose the original and the "Smurf" (my word) painting effect conversion. It is actually very simple, you can do it in five moves in Simplify3.
1.Providing you have opened a photo click on "Reset all"(lower right corner) to be sure everything is in the default position.
2.Presets(left top): click the first one "BuzSim".
3.Color space(on the right):move slider "Simplify size" to the right to select how much you want to apply.
4.Adjust(below Color space etc):apply "Saturation" by moving the slider.
5.Edges(still below Color space etc): move the slider "Edge strenght" to the right to kind of sharpen the outline,a little bit goes a long way.You are done.Of course you can also use other sliders,I am trying to keep the instructions to the minimum.
Let me know if this works for you.Good luck,Ivan.

Thank you Ivan! I just did a quick sample and it came out pretty well. Will have to play around in that general direction to finesse the results. I'm one of the people that really like effects/filters applied to photographic images. :)

I really like that Topaz integrates with PhotoShop Elements. Is just another choice on the Filters Menu. Very easy to use and like the effects I've been able to create so far.

Time well spent, I'd say! Photoshop Elements already keeps me occupied. I got a 30 day free trial of Clean, Simplify & Adjust. Let the fun begin!
