I just finished reading the Traitor and the Spy by Ben Macintyre. It’s the true story of Oleg Gordievsky who was a British Spy deep in the KGB in the Eighties. At one point the author details how the KGB engineered several disinformation campaigns using British politicians, journalists and labor leaders. Their intent was to create dissonance between classes, based in economic disparity, privilege and extolling the virtues of Socialism. Some of the individuals involved were simply Socialist leaning dupes, some were paid in one form or another, hidden behind the term Progressive, a term coined originally by the Soviets.

Much of the rhetoric of that time is similar to the noise one hears when listening to Sanders, Warren, AOC and others. We have to wonder what their real end game is. Is todays deep dive into Impeachment a cover for Russian influence behind the scenes?

The Russians play Trump like a cheap fiddle, and looking at the similarities in our Progressive Socialists to the Socialists of the Cold war era maybe they’re being played as well (willingly perhaps?).
Just wondering.

They are called dolphins, and those are in EdmOnds, WA. Dolphins are clustered pilings placed to protect ships and other structures from each other, commonly near docks where the dolphins take the brunt of hard ferry landings. They also are used for moorings in areas where there is no room for barges and such to swing on an anchor.
I suspect that they are built with the top ends of the wooden piles (an individual log driven into the ground is a pile, a multiplicity of piles is piling, as if English wasn't weird enough already) lashed together with cable so they can flex more than they could if rigidly connected, thereby enabling the dolphin to absorb a lot of repeated impact and dissipate the energy safely. Modern large-scale versions like the ones pictured use more elaborately engineered superstructure that is more predictable and durable than the cable lashing originally used in the NW (the big-boy version of baling wire or duck tape).
This note nearly broke spell-check...

Just because you're on a diet doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to look at the menu.

After 20+ years of Democratic control of the Seattle City Council Seattle has devolved into a dis-functional Socialist hellhole. The streets are unsafe, long time businesses are closing for security reasons the homeless come here for the benefits, and there is no opportunity for meaningful social discourse. The city council is ruled by a bullhorn wielding harridan who was elected as a Democrat. A microcosm of what is to come nationally.

The iron balls on either side of the compass are used for calibration. They are only moved for calibration purposes. Look up "binnacle". Many seem to have been painted red and green, the left being red, the same color as the marker light on that side of the ship.

So it appears there is no way to tell the direction of the "ship" from the photo.

You are mostly right. The balls are used to equalize the magnetic field of the vessel itself so that it correctly reads magnetic north unaffected by the ships own magnetic field.

You are also correct that the balls do not change sides.

I have used Costco in the past and was satisfied with what I got back. You get JPG's which is OK and can be worked in PS. I also sent several hundred to DIGMYPICS and was very satisfied. I used them because I wanted the scans in a lossless format. (TIF).

One advantage is that you get the ability to look at the results before you accept them. I was very satisfied with the results.

Good luck

I bet you all have your cameras set as from the factory ..sharp +3 which always gives a soft picture with any lens ..move it to +9 . Then stick it on a 24 mp FX with a low pass filter and you are doomed. Try it on a D810 or D850 before you say its soft. Did you do the fine focus adjust ..mine are +15

Actually I haven't done that, but I will now
Thanks

Here's the thing...
This is a consumer level lens. Unlike the so called holy trinity lenses it's not aimed at those on the top of the foto food chain.

I have used the 28-300 on my 610 for the past few years as a walk around. My observation is that it's weak at the extreme ends but quite good in its mid ranges (where most of what I do happens) Its not a replacement for the trinity but put together they cost $6000+. I do have the 70-200 and love it but it has its limitations.

Walk around is just that. See it shoot it, move on.

One thing. If you end up with one use the 28mm macro switch to lock the lens in place. It has a tendency to creep.

Take Hiway 1 south of Crescent city. It's a beautiful drive if you're not in a hurry. It's twisty and slow going but shouldn't be tooo bad this time of year

[quote=Architect1776]Most photos of landmarks are over photographed and even family later could care less about your 500 shots of Antelope Canyon that there are millions of identical shots on the internet. Keep some for your personal pleasure but they will be meaningless in the future.

I keep asking myself how many pictures of Mt Rainier I need. But I keep shooting. We look directly at it 24/7.
