Thanks everyone for your advice. Our train is leaving Williams at 9:30 AM. I will hopefully get some shots prior to leaving the station and once at the Canyon try for shots of it leaving the station there. As its a quick overnight group tour of 18 people my time for shooting will be limited. I will post whatever shots I get, Thanks again for all your help.

Going to be taking the Christmas Train from Williams, AZ to Grand Canyon this weekend. This going to be a large group of 18 people on the trip. I won't have much time for photos but want to get a nice side shot of the train either before boarding or after getting off at the Canyon. Need help with best way to do this. I am planning on just taking the Canyon SX50 instead of the T5i with multiple lenses due to time and people constraints.

Would like shots to include the engine not just the cars. Not concerned about people shots, just the train.

TIA,

Beautiful place. I was there in August for a 3 day camping trip on the North Rim. I find after seeing both the North and South Rim areas I much prefer the North Rim. Less crowded and so peaceful. Angels Arch was amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your post SteveR. I am going to write down the name and locations. Neither of us have heard of these 2 places. They sound great. I will let you know if we can make it to either place.

Since you will be so close to Salt Lake City, will you by any chance have time to go to Antelope Island State Park or Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, a 74000 acre refuge about 40 miles north of SLC? Both are drive throughs that will provide plenty of wildlife opportunities. These WOULD be perfect for your 100-400mm. Let me know if you go to Antelope Island, one of UHH members gets there about three times a week. She lives just ten minutes away. I'm sure she'd be glad to meet you there.

Thank you for your advice. I have decided to take all 3 lenses. I am going to look into the extender again.

Of the three, the Sigma will probably be dead weight. For what you are going to do a wide angle is a must, as is a good telephoto zoom. The Canon offers much more opportunity, the extra reach of 400mm will give you many more opportunities than the focal lengths between 20-100mm. I know several pro shooters who use only the Canon 100-400mm and a wide angle lens and shoot all day long. Less than 100mm is not needed for birds and landscapes. Consider if you might getting a 1.4X extender as it will give you an added boost from the Canon that will add more range to your use. Whatever you do have maximum fun! Enjoy yourself and shoot the lights out of the great landscapes you encounter.

Thank you, it should be a great trip. My friends are driving in, I am the only one flying into Salt Lake where they will pick me up. I wish we could do 2 weeks but time restraints don't allow for it. We do plan on doing a lot of sightseeing in the area.

Maxing out my plastic is not an option that I would even consider. This trip is about 3 friends sightseeing and photography not shopping.

They sell all that S__T somewhere in Utah. Make this first trip a shopping trip. Surely you haven't tapped out all your plastic!!!

Thank you MtnMan. This is a very interesting idea. I will give it a try.

Here is something to try for wildlife. It acheives autoexposure in M by invoking auto ISO. Set your aperture to min for the lens and a min shutter speed of 1/800 for your 400mm and let the camera set ISO. You might be pleasantly surprised by the sharp hand-held images and good exposures.

Oh, and try spot and center weighted metering.
