That's a great shot...

Having been born and raised in Northern Michigan, and since my mother and my birthdays were in the same week in August, traditionally we would go up to the UP to celebrate, to places like the Soo Locks or Mackinaw Island or Tahquamenon Falls. I guess the first time I was there would have been close to 70 years ago (I'll be 77 this coming August).

The oldest pictures that I've got were taken in August 1965, when my girl friend (now my wife of 56 years) and I went up there for my 18th birthday. This was when I was using a Kodak Brownie Starlet camera.

That last time we were there was in July 2021, when we were there with our two oldest sons and four of our five granddaughters .

If it's OK with the OP, I'd like to post some of my images taken over the years.

Wonderful memories. You must have been at Michigan Tech back during the glory years for the hockey team.

I would love to see your images and you are more than welcome to post them here. We an just make this the northern Michigan memories thread.

Well, you simply said "choices", which includes the camera.

Me? I shoot in Program mode most of the time, unless I want to specifically configure something a certain way.
If they don't explain the choice and reason behind it, the numbers mean nothing.
Unless one wants to guess.....

In order of importance I am concerned with the subject; the light; the framing; the settings; the lens; the camera model; the camera manufacturer.

The reasons behind choices are usually pretty obvious by looking at the images - freeze subject motion, control depth of field, deal with low light conditions. But what do I know? Apparently, I can't even post in the right section. Thankfully, our resident pack of forum police were on duty.

But Bill, don't you know, it's just an "accident"?

You doubt that it was? Wow. What do you imagine the deep dark motive could possibly be for doing that on purpose?

In 10 years I have never posted on the wrong forum until now. As soon as I noticed my mistake I asked admin to move them.

But do you know WHY they made that choice?
My choice was solely because I was pleased with that brand film cameras I have and it was less than $1,000 at the time I purchased it.

You are talking about choice of camera. Just grab one and start taking photos was always my approach.

I am interested in knowing the choices the photographer made. What's the harm?

I don't have much of a reaction either, but it nearly killed my sister. Someone was burning it and she went thru the smoke.

That is awful. Don't ever burn those plants! (Poison ivy, Poison oak, Poison sumac). A lot of people have made that mistake.

Wow! That is one gorgeous photo of those falls. Great perspective from that angle. Well done.

Thanks, Greg. Mostly I got lucky - the light, the mist, the colors.

Wow, I have been pictorially thunderstruck.
When I first saw this pic I thought that the top half had been selectively processed in a faux Monet-ish way.
Then my brain engaged fully (clunk) and I was struck by the beauty of the light selectively dancing on the upper tree tops.
Posted in the wrong place? All is forgiven, so . . . .

Not only the "wrong area" but...wilderness...in Michigan??? In 2024 ?!?!

Sylvania Wilderness is an 18,327 acres protected area located a few miles west of Watersmeet Township, Michigan. Sylvania is located entirely within the bounds of the Ottawa National Forest, and is currently being managed as a wilderness area as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System by the U.S. Forest Service.

Within its borders lie 34 lakes set against a backdrop of old-growth forests. It represents one of only a handful of such areas left in the Midwest. The old-growth northern hardwood forests in this wilderness are some of the most extensive in North America, nearly spanning the entire park at some 15,000 acres. Sugar maple, eastern hemlock, and yellow birch are the most common trees, and are found along with white, red, and jack pine, white spruce, balsam fir, and paper birch. Wildlife abounds in the park, with white-tailed deer, black bear, grey wolves, porcupines, bobcat, beaver, otter, coyote, fox, bald eagle, loon, osprey, and many others.
