Yes, Morganti gives good explanation of both the use and cost scenarios as of today.

Just a basic question.
When you're out taking pictures and you need to adjust settings, do you go into the menu or to the "Q"
Thanks for your responses.

Oh my Canon the Q as long as the setting I want to change is there- one stop for common settings. Otherwise crawl through the bloody menu's.

As I have reached 80, I find my R5 and RF100-500mm, which I like very much are too heavy for me to carry, left and hold. I am thinking about Switching to Sony with the 200-600mm, not sure which camera. Any thoughts?

Have a friend with the same issue, moved to the Sony RX10 IV with the 24-600 Zeiss lens. He sells a lot of photos of birds even with 20 MP.

Had to look up Grey Heron as it looked like a Great Blue Heron. From a search:

What is the difference between a great blue heron and a gray heron?
Grey Heron vs Great Blue Heron - AZ Animals
Grey herons are 40 inches tall and have a length of between 33 and 40 inches. They also have a wingspan that between 5ft and 6ft 5ins wide and weigh no more than 4 pounds, 10 ounces. Great blue herons are almost twice as heavy with weights up to 7.9 pounds. They also have a larger wingspan of 5ft 6ins to 6ft 7ins.

This is one of my favorites from Brooks Falls. The light was so pretty on this mom and her 2 cubs.
This rock was definitely a great spot to pose in evening light.

The second I really like the puffin with the pretty flowers. This photo has a big crop, but worth it I thought!

Outstanding!! this puffin in Colorado? :)

Yes, controversial, but I saw these reasons online from Peta Pixel.

1. Handling is not very good on a phone, but a camera is easy to hold, and it has controls that let you make changes easily.
2. The view. The viewfinder of new, mirrorless cameras shows you how changes in settings will affect the final picture. The flip-screen lets you get up or down shots more easily than when using a phone.
3. The flash. Although new cameras seem to be omitting the pop-up flash, it is possible to add a flash unit to the camera. That flash can also be used off-camera to put the light at a different angle. The best you can do with a phone is a small, weak flash.
4. The lens. A modern cell phone might have three separate lenses, but the quality and control aren't as good as what's available for cameras.
5. DOF and bokeh are also lacking in phones, compared with cameras. Selecting a different lens or aperture changes the results you get in the image. That amount of control isn't available with a phone.
6. Movement. The cell phone camera likes to be held steady because it takes multiple shots when you push the button. It's also difficult to follow fast action with a phone, especially considering the multiple shots it takes each time.
7. Selfies. Using the phone for a selfie means using the phone's forward-facing camera, the one with the lowest quality.

The narrator concludes by saying that cell phones are great for quick, casual shots that are going to be shared online, but a real camera will generally give better results.

I've said here many times, that I don't like using a phone as a camera because of the steadiness required while holding the phone away from my body. Holding it steady while taping the button is tricky. I don't always know if the picture has actually been taken. I have to keep my fingers away from the lens. Yes, these are all shortcomings on my part, but they don't apply to a real camera.

I suspect that some of you might disagree with this entire post. That's okay.

I'm currently shooting with the Canon 90D, but with my favorite lenses (24-70 and 70-200) it's just too heavy to take all of the above with me all the time...which I do! Recently visited B&H and checked out their mirrorless Canons...I am find with cropped sensors, so I think I might get the R7. I'd love some feedback from anyone who has made the switch! Thanks!

The R7 is a definite step up but if weight is you primary issue, it's not a big difference.

So Ive never been one of those photographers who think its OK to do basic editing to a photo but that anything more major is cheating....the mentality that says replacing a background or a sky doesnt reflect on what was actually seen at the time of pressing the shutter button and therefore isnt a true photograph. Ive always thought those views were from the dark ages.
The other day I thought Id investigate AI for the first time. I typed in a fairly lengthy description of what I wanted it to come up with....key words etc and then pushed the ok button. I was amazed to find it was more or less exactly what I envisaged in the first place.
I added it to my Flickr photostream but only placed it into a few specific groups designed for AI images.
Id already tagged it as AI generated and the only other thing I did in photoshop was to decrease the size of the bottle in the pic.
Later that day I discovered that it had been chosen as a photo to be included in Flickr explore and that it had recieved several thousand views and a couple of hundred Faves.
I never received any negative feedback...quite the opposite infact...and yet still feel slightly guilty that something I didnt take with a camera has been so well received.
What do other hoggers think?

We will all ponder this. All I want to know is it AI created or not. I can enjoy them differently.

I made this slideshow with Movavi Slideshow Maker 8. First, I clicked on High Quality - 633MB. Then I clicked on Medium Quality - 633MN. I thought that was odd. When I uploaded it to DropBox, it took a while to upload, but it took over an hour for the processing. That was very unusual.

I noticed that I posted the 2022 slideshow on September 12 last year.

Catskill does an amazing job each year with their cats. Saugerties did horses this year and changes the venue each year.

Me too. Just make sure the camera and lens are secured in the bag as most do.

My desktop PC is old and way too slow. I want a good one mainly for managing and editing photos. I use Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Topaz AI (Denise, etc) have 45 mb images……100,000 images…..etc.

Would like to upgrade to a desktop that will last a while. Want to stay with PC.

Would appreciate knowing about good reviews of such desktops, other sources of help, or specific recommendations.

Thanks much

Chuck

Why a desktop? I just got a I9 Lenovo laptop, rocket fast, 32 GB mem and architected for 64, yada yada and I process the same programs as you. The 45MP images suggests an R5? I have a 1 TB SSD C drive and 2 4TB SSD external. One is backup. It goes where I go. If you not mobile then by all means go for the desktop. Being retired and moving around it replaced the dog. Simply food for thought.

I have been dabbling in AI photography for a little while now and it has made me wonder is landscape photography might be on the way out, by a paid photographer that is. I am curious to know what others think on the subject. I have displayed an AI photo for you guys to look at. I have not tried to do anything spectacular. I am just testing the waters, so to speak, to see what AI can do. What do you folks think?

Whether we like it or not, being paid for photos for advertisement will likely dwindle. Sorry, it's all about profit and if it's cheap to generate your own, I suspect it will dwindle to just philographers who appreciate the art! We went from outhouses to indoor plumbing, horse and buggy to cars, Tv antennas to cable, etc etc.

Tony showed pictures of the upcoming Nikon ZF last night - pictures from Nikon Rumors. He thought it was a big mistake for Nikon to be offering it in black and only black. This was designed to be a retro camera, so it should be available in silver. Maybe that will happen. After all, it's not like they would have to change the mechanics or electronics to offer it in silver. I might buy a silver one, but I certainly wouldn't buy a black one.

Shall we have a different color to match each of out wardrobes? Hopefully people spend their time looking at the internals of the camera. Manufacturers have tried that in the past and ate those alternate flavors. Let's look at the corollary, if after reviewing the specs I decided to buy it and the only color was silver or red or whatever because the black was out of stock, they would lose my sale! I'll bet they have lots of data to lead them to or away.

Given the fact that AI images are NOT photographs, should they even be allowed to be posted on a "Photographic Site" like Ugly Hedgehog?

How do you propose to ban them? Have every photo analyzed to see if it is, if that is even possible. Admins have a tough enough time policing text much less real or AI pictures.
