Thanks,

The programs are on YOUR COMPUTER. Updates come via the web, so if you lost service you would not get the updates until service was restored

That makes it sound like you can buy a month of cc and have the latest version then not connect that pc to the cloud again. I would not think that is the case :?: :?:

I'm trying to decide if I want LR, then cloud or local?

For a quarter mile in less than optimum light - this looks just fine. I am not sure you have a focus issue. Do you have a live view focused version of this? I would stop worrying about not getting the same results as a $12,000 600 F4, (because you won't) and just enjoy your lens. You will be happier as soon as you stop testing and looking for an issue, and learn how to use it - if you haven't already, invest in good support. And look at Moose Peterson's Long Lens Technique - this will make a big difference. Over time your images will improve, just be patient and let it happen. But stop looking for a problem with the hardware - it seems just fine. In time you will realize that using this lens wide open and at the longest focal length will cheat you of the best image quality this lens has to offer. But you will need to establish that threshold for yourself.

That is great! I printed it and will keep it with my lens.

Just to wrap-up this thread, I've learned the answer: "I need to learn how to use a new lens that is a major step from what I've used before.".

In other words, the helpful posts here plus a trip to our local photo shop showed me that this is not simply attach the lens and get wonderful shots. So, slowing down and getting used to what I have in my hand is a start.
There is a little back focus problem with this on my camera. A company comes periodically (this friday) to Nashville and are specialists in precisely calibrating camera & lens ($20). So I will have that done.
But, beyond that I'm learning to use that 600 (900mm on my 70D).
Check the untouched 1/4 mile shot below.

Thanks for all the input.

Next Monday I'm visiting Ripley's Aquarium Canada in Toronto. Want some winning shots for a photo contest. Theme "The wonder of water" Check out their web site for pro photos and give me some ideas and advice to get these same shots. www.ripleyaquariums.com/canada Canon 5D Mk lll. 25-105mm 1:4L IS USM. Also have Sigma 150 macro that takes great non-macro pics, plus others lenses. CPL ?? Wide angle lens? Settings? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx. Dave

At the Chattanooga aquarium, I used my Sigma 10-20 and it worked great when I was up very close to the glass. Comments to my post said you need to be in contact with the glass. You may do ok at 25mm but, I think more lens will be difficult in aquarium distances.
Also, light is not great in all areas of tanks.
Good luck and enjoy.

Beautiful. Only thing I can think is to crop in a little closer to end of pier but leave the end showing.

Which do you like best.....foreground or background sharp?

I'd have to go with 2nd. Like both but, the 1st one blurs back part of the white plant. Needed just a little more dof I think

I feel like I am whistling in the wind. I spoke to Paul at Sigma and he said that you should automatically send in a new lens and body. They check the autofocus for free and I believe also for the duration of the warranty. He also said that once it is set, it should not change.

Well, I will find out what Tamron does. Camera is about 5 months old and lens about a month.

Sure do not want Tamron service to void Canon warranty or visa versa.

Reigs, what are you using for a tripod and head?

My tripod may very well be the culprit here. I have 2 and neither are really suited to this weight.

I'm taking it to the store where I bought the lens and test there. Try to use good tripod, try different body, and try different lens. I'll see what they think.

Thank for all the help and teaching me how to check this far and even adjust if necessary.

Well, I have done some re-testing with clear target and close to level. I could not find a difference using rear view or the eyepiece and that was big relief to me.
It was too windy for my tripod to actually set/measure/adjust fine AF but, did confirm that there is "pretty" good focus at 600mm.
The yardstick is about 15 meters (45 feet) and the target is about 40 meters (120 feet). The pattern on the target has 2pt - 24pt lines.

These are straight from camera, no pp

On a calm day I will do fine adjustment for focus. I'm still not 100% positive of the quality at 600mm and would like opinions.

Thanks,
Regis

I appreciate all the tips and help. I'll be doing these tests this afternoon
I'll do both ways that Gene51 and Naturepics43 outlined and post some results this evening.

Thanks again for all the input and I hope that I don't have to take back for repair.
