I agree with the others, great shots and as said before the first one makes you feel as if you are actually there.I've seen this steamer run in person. May I ask what camera equipment did you use?

I hope the OP forgives me also, but "thank You" for taking the times to upload the examples. I switched to Sony in November of 2012 and have read many comments regarding "classic minolta vs sony IQ". This was the first time I've seen a a/b comparison.

Ronny, I hope the OP forgives me for posting pictures in his thread without permission.

Here is an example of what I was talking about.

Both of these pictures were taken, seconds apart, with a tripod mounted Sony A77. White balance and color balance was set prior to taking the pictures.

The first image was taken with the Minolta 50mm f/1.7 and the second with the Sony 50mm f/1.8 lens. There was NO post processing done; these are JPEGs straight out of camera*. If you look carefully, you will see a difference in the color rendition. The Minolta gives a warmer, richer cast to the image, while the Sony has slightly better resolution, but is cooler and more sterile.

Make sure you check the download. ENJOY!

*The original files were too large to upload so I reduced them in Lightroom to 600 X 800 and 200KB size. NO other image manipulation was done.

I wasn't going to beat a dead horse but your comment forced me to! I will freely admit that most people on the HH have nothing but good things to say about them, but as I've posted before in January 13 I called them concerning the new tamaron 70-200 2.8 since I'm a sony shooter and was on the fence about it vs the sony version. Reached a gentleman that was rude, short, uninformed and uncaring. Regarding the original post 90% of my buying is done with the local camera store, "Dodd's" which have several locations in my area(dayton/Cinn,OH)They have a lot on inventory, especially the super store in Cinn and are very helpful/knowledgeable. Their prices are reasonable also and I was pleasantly shocked at the trade in value they gave me when I switched from a canon t2i to the sony a77. On a side note it's nice to actually deal with a live person face to face that actually knows the sony system,(jeff @ the Cinn store).

I don't think I've read where anyone using B&H has had any negative results. If I ever get to NY it's on my list of places to visit. I have gotta get a T-shirt from there.

Ditto! I shop the Dodd Camera stores in the Dayton & Cincinnati OH areas. Great service, great deals.

Great that you have obviously a great local retailer. We have Dodd Camera here in Cleveland that does the same, twice a year they have a factory forum, all kinds of manufacturers come, show their wares and offer free services, from sensor cleaning to tune ups and check ups. Of course it is designed to sell product, I always walk out with something new. Wife had banned me from going back

Wow! that's an endorsement for that type of camera. I would have guessed Canon dslr. The IQ reminds me of my former Canon T2i.

The issue with a portrait lens is this: longer lenses all you to fill the frame and stand back farther from the subject and thus avoid "stretching" the features...i.e. the nose looking longer..the ears looking like they are on the back/far side of the head..etc.

You will fill the frame with your subject, (for example a head/shoulders shot) and to get the right framing, you'd need about an 85mm lens.

It depends a bit on what camera you have...if you have a cropped sensor camera you naturally stand a few more feet back to get the same framing.

So...to get the most pleasing facial compression of features....this is sort of the guide/rule of thumb:

50mm
Nothing closer than full length

85mm
Head/chest

135mm
Head/shoulders

200mm
Tight head shot.

I know that people will say that they take fine head shots with a 50mm but....I disagree. I've done that and then went back and looked at them side by side with a longer focal length and was shocked at the (now noticeable) distortion.

This set of images illustrates what you get with each lens choice.

I've followed this debate for several years now. Thanks for taking the time to post the samples. " A picture is worth a thousand words".

Anyone shooting indoor sports, basketball in particular with the Sony A99 and Sony/Sigma/Tamaron 70-200mm 2.8 ? What are your observations and suggestions? Sample pics would be greatly appreciated.

I too believe strongly in supporting local brick & mortor stores wether for photography or anything else. Without support these stores go out of business and to me there is nothing like shopping in person where I can put my eyes and hands on something. This played into to my decision to switch systems from canon to sony. The sony just felt better in my hands. To me personally its worth a few bucks more. And since we are name dropping I live in the Dayton,Oh area and I shop at the "Dodd" camera stores. Ive kept my mouth shout since I joined this forum when someone has raved about how great and wonderful B&H is, well when I switched to sony I called them to inquire about the tamaron 70-200mm 2.8. The guy I spoke to seemed uninterested and uninformed. My 2 cents worth
