you are correct ..... 21st Century right wingers think that those who wrote the Constitution, agree with the modern right they fail to view the remarks of Jefferson, Washington, Hamilton etc. within the context of their time ....they think that men of 18th Century ideas would agree with them .... if the founders were to hear the remarks of the modern right .... they would have implored Washington to become King ...

I just watched a special on the reign of Queen Victoria and then Queen Elizabeth and I tend to agree.

History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.
-Thomas Jefferson to Alexander von Humboldt, Dec. 6, 1813.

The whole history of these books [the Gospels] is so defective and doubtful that it seems vain to attempt minute enquiry into it: and such tricks have been played with their text, and with the texts of other books relating to them, that we have a right, from that cause, to entertain much doubt what parts of them are genuine.

You realize of course that if Jefferson were alive today and posted these same responses under the avatar name of TJ (i.e., these quotations) he would have been slammed into obscurity as a "libtard" who didn't begin to understand the Constitution or what the Founding Fathers thought.

Such is the mind of the modern, far-right conservative (as opposed to the the modern conservative).

Doesn't just apply to old marines, my army DI in '66 told us that fighting fair was for athletic competition, in real life you aren't serious if you aren't cheating. If you haven't got a real weapon, improvise one. Otherwise just back off and avoid the conflict.

Interesting study.

For old Marines it isn't that we would not do well. It is more like, Been there-Done that. We are lazy now and would rather just shoot the person than fight. Marines have nothing to prove to anyone.

Semper Fi to my brothers and sisters,

I am as guilty of this as anyone. In my haste to hit that "SEND" button, I ignore the fact that there are "spell, grammar, punctuation, and proper usage" checkers available in my haste to publish the most recent brilliance that emanates from my brain.

(maybe I need to taper down on those afternoon highballs).

In any case, my apologies.

2 cautions...,

1) sometimes strong language ... but it's also funny
2) don't expect this theory to work with ex-Marines, especially the old ones. They already know they'd probably lose the fight... so they'll just kill you.

Indirectly you are right, but more directly it is the 'big money, big influence people" who have learned how to manipulate voters.

I think if Thomas Jefferson were alive today he'd say something like this,

"It's like my mechanic explained it to me the other day,
Hey Jeff, come here, I think I found your problem...
The liberals (the POTUS and the senate) are like your accelerator and the conservatives (the Speaker and conservative congress) are like your brakes. The problem isn't with either, the problem is the "nut behind the wheel.
You just need to figure out who's actually been driving your car."

I just checked this out on snopes and they say that Austrailia is not a real country. It's actually a large, floating casino that used to be owned by Donald Trump...

The source seems to be pretty credible, it came from the Australian Tourism Website. :

Excellent. Thats good to know. So either Jmangis was lying to us or his father was lying to him. Either way, it's good to know that U.S. generals haven't been going around executing people.

Urban legends are often passed from one acquaintance to another, and often times believed sincerely by both. There's a strong tendency to give them a little extra bit of credence by adding "I was there".

Sorry, but this is just a variation of a similar story that was making the rounds of the internet a few years ago except that it was attributed to General Black Jack Pershing, in WWI.
In that instance it was 50 radical Muslims who were rounded up ... 49 were killed and the 50th let go to ... other than that the stories are almost identical.

Earlier variations were spread in 2002 and the earliest example was 2001, 10 days after the attack on the twin towers

Silver,
My only point was, that there is no known proof that Sacretes ever wrote anything down. That the only reason we do know he lived is because he had two students who did write down his stories of his life and his thinking.

Good point, but to add to direct proof of Socrates actual existence are the works of Aristophanes, a well known comic/playwright and contemporary of his who wrote a number of works trying to discredit him... mostly notably his work entitled, "The Clouds" which was great comic theater for the 3rd centuryBC (and reminiscent of our own modern day "Saturday Night Live"). There is probably no more conclusive proof of someone's existence than to be made fun of by a classical Greek playwright.
